weird thing I've kinda gotten used to

so ever since I bought my car 3 years ago I seem to have an issue with the keys. I make sure to switch them every so often so each battery gets charged and they are but this is what the issue is... sometimes my car just doesn't want to respond when I press a button on my key. I will keep pressing and eventually get fed up and go to put my key in the lock and then all of a sudden it responds and unlocks/locks/opens trunk. Has anybody else had this happen to them and what do I even do? I'm assuming its not the key itself but whatever receiver is in the car and recognizing the transmission from the key is acting up. That or my car is just playing hard to get...

Unfortunately I have a similar issue. It happens more often when it's extremely hot outside. There's something happening (more likely not happening) in my GM5 unit, which is actually a common problem w/ the e46. Here's a link to more info: link.

Not yet. I'm half convinced I might be able to fix it myself. First step is getting it out, then I'll go from there.

I was reading a post somewhere earlier today and someone mentioned that his key remote issues went away after replacing the car's battery. Just another option to check if all else fails.

A question for clarity: "Turn on ignition" means to turn the car on, or just turning it on to, say, position #2? Just want to be certain. I don't necessarily like turning my car on for just 5 sec if I don't have to. Stage 5 anal you know. And, repeat for other keys means repeat from very beginning (including turning on car), or just from the 2nd step? Again, just wanting to be clear.

For reinitialization, at no point do you actually have to start your car. Pos 2 is right before ignition where your lights would turn on assuming its on.
It's finally time to settle down,
