Dumb A/C in rear coupe question?

In some of the e46 coupes, is that tiny secretary-desk-style rollup cubby actual rear A/C vents?

Noticed that the current 3 coupes have rear A/C vents in that spot...seems strange that my ZHP has a little cubby there where I would have expected A/C for rear passengers to be.

Just curious. Tried to do a search, but everything I look for related to "rear vents" gets me something about the rear windows instead.

I don't think that there was ever a vent that went through the center console. I know that there are vents under each of the front seats that blow towards the rear of the car. Those vents work when you have the air flow directed down.

Mine is just a box to hold things, not vents. (I keep quarters for parking there).

I'm pretty sure they are all small compartments, not vents.

I dont use my coin holder cause its a pain to get to since its under my armrest....i just use my ashtray for coins...thus serving another purpose. If my coins take up my ash tray it deters me from smoking as i really need to quit that habit

I keep 20+ quarters in that compartment, the coin holder is too small and too slow for access. I do have a few coins in the holder but not many. The quarters get used by the handful as certain areas by the beach are 12 mins/qtr and I park for several hours (4 - 6) playing beach tennis. They've switched some, but not all meters to accept credit cards.

Come to think of it, mine really is an ashtray. I don't smoke (or wouldn't let anyone smoke in my car anyway) so I don't really think of it as an ashtray. My car came with option 441 Smoker's Package.
