Uh oh, Marcus... You said you weren't going to get into photography, and now buying and looking at some pretty expensive glass... 85/1.4... Ouch. 70-200/2.8... Double-ouch.

    Here's my kit:
    Nikon D7000 w/grip (replaced my D300)

Nikon 16-85mm f/3.5-5.6G VR (everyday lens)
    Nikon 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6G VR
    Nikon 105mm f/2.8 AF-D
    Nikon 50mm f/1.8G
    Sigma 10-20mm f/4-5.6 EX

    Nikon SB-400
    Nikon SB-600

I don't shoot sports or wildlife professionally, so I don't need pro tele glass. I'd still love to have a 70-200 f/2.8... I've shot with it a few times, and it's an awesome lens... It's just too damn expensive for casual hobby use, imho. Even an older used 70-200 f/2.8 is double the price of my cheap 70-300, and the fact is that the 70-300 works great if you're not a working pro... Hell, I've shot a couple of air shows with the 70-300, and I got really, really excellent results. I'd have to use a 1.6x TC with the 70-200 to get the same reach as the 70-300, so now we're talking 4-5x the price. I'd rather put the money towards the ZHP.

Steve, tell me about it. I blame Casey for introducing me to prime lenses. The 50mm f/1.4 is a beast. Now I'm spoiled with the fast glass.

And I am in love with this D7000. I think it's a steal at roughly $1200. It's a great DX camera. Very solid. Casey recommended it to me, since I am not looking to turn pro anytime soon (as in never).

The 85/1.4 is hard to go wrong with... A little spendy, but an awesome lens with lots of creative application - I'd sure like one.

But, the 70-200... What would you mainly use it for?

Yeah, the D7000 is a lot of camera for the money. It's actually pretty amazing to me the quality of gear we all have access to at this point.

Steve, if I EVER got the 70-200 it would be for sports. Think outdoor sports, including San Diego Padres, Chargers, etc.

But I got the 55-200 because it gives me similar focal lengths without me having to spend all that money. I'm checking to see just how often I REALLY shoot that kind of stuff.

And, yep, I agree with you on the cameras we have access to. It's crazy. It's a great time to be alive.

    Nikon 50 1.4
    Tamron 28-75 2.8 (currently for sale $425)
Nikon 80-200 mm (currently for sale at $900) SOLD
*Buy them both for $1200 and I will throw in a Tiffen ND8 filter that fits the Tamron absolutely free.

    Lighting
    2x Alienbee 800
    2x cybersync receivers
    1x cybersync trigger

    Modifiers:
    1x 24" soft box
    1x 48" soft box
    1x 30* small grid
    2x mini dish
    1x 40" reflector gold/white
    1x homemade beauty dish
    1x rainbow gel pack

    Accessories:
Various filters, batteries, CF cards, External hard drives, lense cases, gear bags.........

On a side note.... I see a lot of talk about the elusive 70-200 in this thread, however, I would like to say with confidence that the 80-200 rivals that lense in every way at a fraction of the cost. Better build quality, 80% of the focus speed, razor sharp, and rich colors. The high aperture capabilities of this lens are incredible and you can save a large portion of the cost, if you are willing to sacrifice 10mm on the short end of the lense.
