My personal preference would be a fast portrait lense. 50 1.4 or 85 1.4.

Word with Casey, if you know what you're doing u can make anything work. That being said, 24-70 2.8 is my "walkaround" lens of choice. Of course it's heavy as hell... Nicknamed "the brick"

My 24-70 2.8 zoom
No, it's not quite as sharp or as fast as primes but it's damn close. It would be very difficult for me to choose one focal length to walk around with so for me its:
One great quality zoom > two excellent primes

OK....thanks to all. So...I guess.....my refined question is this. If I have the opportunity to by just the body....then go with a specific lens....should I go this route, or just buy the kit that usually includes an 18mm-55mm lens?

I buy body only and then just get the lenses I want. Generally kit lenses lack decent quality in the low/mid range body kits. 5d mkii kit has 24-105 f4 L which is not junky at all.
