    E46 Touring

Not a ZHP, but.....My daughter is in the market for a E46 Touring (kids). Possibly from '03 - '05s. The only ones available in Cali are 325i's Touring. And Automatics. One manual available but is a Xi (not). Personally, I have never, ever dealt with BMW autos. I have a couple of questions. Could you guys provide a site for a automatic tune-up procedure, ie. fluid & filter change & what type of fluid? Any info on what type of transmission is on the Touring? Hopefully, they are not the GM. I hate the GM transmissions..... DW....Feel free to transfer to the right site. Thanks.

I think it might be a little easier for her to have a Step with kids in the car. If you know the VIN of the car you can check your tranny to see if it's a GM or not, I don't think many if any tourings got that crappy one. Tune up should not be too much different than a MT, I'll look up some stuff and get back to you

You want the GM, if its a ZF I would not buy it unless the repair was done with the updated drum. Look up reverse failures because of the ZF revers drums blowing apart. The GM can have the same issue but its a solenoid and not near as much to change. The GM reverse failure is probably 1 to every 10 ZF failures though.

That being said every auto has issues but the GM is very strong. All the E46 xi's with an auto have the GM, my cousins has 190k and mine has 186k.

My last BMW, was a 325i-steppy. I purchased the tranny refresh kit from Bavauto. It included the filter, magnets, screws, and gasket. I got the fluid from ECS. The type of fluid will be determined by the sticker ion the tranny. I think I got 7 qts. It's a bit of a pain, but well worth the effort for fresh fluid.

I guess that is the new terminology....refresh kit. Evidently, I forgot about ZF. We will have to determine when the day comes on which specific Touring she will be getting. Will never know what type until I crawl under the check out the tranny. JP...will wait for your research. I know I have to drop the pan and replace stuffs inside. Is filling the fluids still through the dipstick????? Old fashioned way...unless there is a new fangled way to fill.

    Lawrence,
    This might help.

The transmission fluid should be pumped into the side of the main sump through the transmission fill hole (Figure 16)

I would imagine it'd be similar for E46...

    Lawrence,

Saw this at Boris Said's site. Don't forget he said he will match what CCA gives you for it (it's only $250 for pre-owned). It won't let me put a link, you have to go to the site.
