Im looking at an 05 ZHP and it says its certified pre-owned. Isn't CPO only 2 years extra on top of the 4 year BMW warranty? 2005+ 6 years=2011. Its 2012 now. Did the dealer mess up or am I missing something.

I heard CPO starts on the day the car is "activated", which could mean the dealer punched its warranty start really late... So I suppose it's possible, but for just a few months ???
In theory it wouldn't be CPO... but, CPO is validated that everything has been checked out (they should provide you a checklist), and then extended warranty. A dealer could do the checklist and then add 2 years warranty themselves and therefore call it CPO I would think.

I think you're confusing "Certified Pre-Owned" certification with the BMW extended maintenance (warranty) program. AFAIK, BMW CPO doesn't have an expiration . . .

CPO means they have brought it back to "spec" - not necessarily factory spec, but close. Basically they do a complete inspection and make sure all major systems, plus many minor things, are in good working order. The warranty itself (IIRC) is 2 years/50k from the date when it was certified. It has nothing to do with expiration of original warranty. Hell, you could technically buy an E38 CPO but it would probably cost a ton for the dealer to have it pass the inspection, that's why you don't usually see older cars listed as CPO

ahhh I see, didnt know CPO was an inspection also and not necessarily a warranty. So Basically it doesn't have a warranty and the dealer just did all of the proper maintenance before selling it. Still pretty good.

here is a basic description:
To be eligible for enrollment in the Certified Pre-Owned Vehicle Program, a late-model vehicle must be in service for at least six months or have more than 6,000 miles but less than 60,000 miles on the odometer. They must pass an extensive examination – a thorough and rigorous inspection by BMW factory-trained technicians. They inspect the vehicle for safety, performance and wear. If something is not right, it is fixed. If it cannot be fixed, the car cannot become a Certified Pre-Owned BMW. Important: Although the Certified Pre-Owned BMW Limited Warranty is extremely comprehensive, it is not an extension of the original 4-year/50,000 mile New BMW Vehicle Limited Warranty.
