A single bad shift isn't going to trash a synchro, IMO.
I'd get a good used unit, swap it myself with a new clutch, and rock on.
Or learn to double clutch 5th.
Just out of curiosity, does it grind 5th every time? Are you sure it' shot? 80k miles is way too soon to have toasted synchros...

$4300 is crazy for a trans rebuild. You can buy a rebuilt one from Husker BMW for $3000. Part #23007532498
