Thread: What did you do for your ZHP/ BMW / MINI today? #2

The install was easy. All you need is an 18mm wrench and a 3-jaw puller. Comes right out. I used a 30mm deep socket and gently tapped the new CSB back on. A pry bar is very useful as well.

For the centering bushing, a bolt, hammer and wet toilet paper got the job done.

Not sure how it feels yet as I'm doing this along with a manual swap for the touring. Figured I'd have a nice long weekend coming up, so why not try to check this off the list.

Dead due to damaged valve. We will save her soul for future use, but the body will go to car heaven...or another owner...who may or may not turn her into a race car...

Got my coilovers in today. Started off verifying the alignment by string, and surprise surprise my car cooperated this time around. Had 0 toe in front, and 1 mm toe-in at the rear. Then got the camber plates as close as possible by measuring how far inboard the strut shaft was before, and replicating that (with a touch more caster).

Front ride height is alright, might be a touch too low for what I want to run. But the spring seat is at the top and increasing it further means less thread engagement, not sure I want to do that.

Rear ride height is definitely too low (barely 2 fingers between the tire and the fender) but I had to make 3 adjustments (first two were higher than stock) and each one is a PITA. I don't have the wrenches so it involves removing the lower shock bolt, using the BMW jack to push the upper CA away from the body to remove the spring, then changing spring seat height.

Front camber is at -2.5 and toe is 0 (well, the left side apparently has 1 mm toe-in, but \_(ツ)_/). Rear camber is at -2.5 (-1.0 deg more) as a result of the lowering, toe is 1 mm in on each side. So either I'll jack up rear ride height, or dial out a bit of camber in the rear, or both.

Left both adjusters at nearly full soft less 2 clicks or half a turn, as I read online that it's not recommended to run at the very limits of adjustment in case the adjusters could get stuck. Did a quick 10 minute drive around the block and didn't really get a chance to push it aside from a few slaloms within my lane and a couple swift lane changes, so I don't have too many comments. But during those transients the car definitely feels less "laggy" in its response, and body roll is decreased, as expected.

But what was really surprising was no apparent deterioration in ride quality, or increase in NVH when I intentionally drove over some small potholes or cracks in the pavement. Front ride frequency has nearly doubled, and I have spherical bearings in the front camber plates, so this comes as a pleasant surprise.

Oddly the fix seemed to be switching to the Mahle brand gasket which did seem slightly more substantial and flexible than whatever I ordered off Pelican Parts. I'm trying to figure out what brand I ordered months ago but the reviews for all of the non-BMW brands seem positive. So, just could have been a combination of my car, a particular brand of gasket and me. Now to tackle the adaptive headlights that go left when I turn right . . .
Did you do anything to the headlights before that happened? Usually, they do that when you accidentally swap the ALC units. They are side specific.
