Is that normal? I have about 1/4 inch clearance. Scary, considering if I romp on it and the motor lays over is there any chance of impact?

Hmmm. There isn't a whole lot of clearance. I don't remember exactly. I'll check when I get home.

Got a pic to compare with?
And I'm assuming on the upper side aka, right side of Thermo? On that side is a plastic pin that holds the rad to the core support. Check that.
If on the left of Thermo, then there is a screw on that holds it in place. Make sure those are secure. The only other thing I could think of, assuming both are OEM and shaped that way, would be when the rad was put back in at one point, it wasn't slid down correctly in the groves it goes into.
Here are the pics I told you about Dave. If you get measurements you should only compare automatic transmission with standard mechanical fan.

It might be helpful to have someone actually measure the distance.
Sean, In that top pic you posted, the upper hose coming from the engine, right after the bend is where the fan blade gets really close.
Dave_B, I'll check those mounting pins.
I'll take a pic of mine and post it. It could be totally normal and the motor simply does not lay over during torque. I remember my dad's Bavaria back in the day did not lay over when reved. He always said it was due to good engine balancing.
Dave, maybe its a sign... a sign that you need to this...

It's close but not a hair.
If you want a 6MT pic as well I'd be happy to take one and contribute here.
Here's what mine looks like.
