OBDII specs require the codes to remain even if power to the ECU is lost.
The codes are stored in non volatile memory.
The only way to remove the code is to clear it with the proper tool or correct the error and let the ECU remove the error after it confirms the error condition no longer exists through enough drive cycles.

As shanneba mentioned though, they'll still be stored. Were you able to at least see what they were? It would have cleared itself if the condition that initially triggered the light went away. If you clear it manually and the condition is still there, the light likely will return.
