I have the low profile Harbor Freight aluminum jack which has held up well for 8 years of changing tires for autocross and track events. It was cheap, lightweight and I never get underneath a car with just a jack holding it, so I wasn't too worried about it 'failing'. It's similar to this one:

I noticed it was on sale just a couple months ago in a Harbor Freight ad for $59.99. If you browse the web or check your automotive magazines for coupons, you might find it cheaper.
I also use a big 3-ton jack for changing tires on the X5. I like to use that beast to jack up the entire side of the X5. If you don't have a larger vehicle, the HF jack will do for you and will raise one side on a zhp.
I have this Craftsman 3 ton jack and stands set minus the creeper. I got it for Christmas - purchased for me around 1999(?) based on the Craftsmans name and warranty.
When/if I need it to - it barely gets under the front/rear ends on the Xi. Probably wouldn't work on lowered cars. Almost all of the time I resort to lifting at the jack pads.
I think I have the 3.5 ton version of this (I couldn't find) that was purchased around 2002.
I just saw this one on Amazon... looks shmexy and capable for the stanced...

My floor jack weighs at least 100 lbs. Its a retired one from Discount Tire. It needed a spring and lube, I replaced it and lubed it up and its good as new, With a tape covered handle... sounds classy doesn't it?
