Last night at Wal-Mart I finally found what I had been waiting for:
$22.47 for a 5 qt. jug of Mobil 1 0w40!
Just wanted to share the news...I think you will like it.

If it's sealed...shouldn't be. Oil will absorb moisure over time so if you've got one that you cracked open yeah, I'd use it within a year, but sealed units you could keep on the shelf for a while.

I grabbed 4 when I was there last. Never know when the sale will end.

I bought 2 and will probably get more. This is the regular price for 5w30 and others there!
I had been monitoring our closest Wal-Mart for a LONG and they never had 0w40, ever.
So I was in the Wal-Mart in the next town and made my usual pass-by the oil, and there it was, hahaha.
I even texted my wife, who has an '09 X3 that just went off the 4-yr warranty.
We have 5 bimmers and 1 Kompressor in the family, so I will by more. Last fall NAPA had quarts on sale for a little over $5 ea., and I stocked up then.

The list of LL-01 (from the BMW site)

BMW Long-life rating LL-01 Approved Synthetic Oils for the US Market:
Castrol Syntec European Formula SAE 0W-30
Mobil 1 SAE 0W-40
Pennzoil Platinum European Formula Ultra SAE 5W-30
Valvoline SynPower SAE 5W-30

Why would you need 0W-40 in Mobil and 5W-30 in all the others?

Its just the parameters for the LL-01 that don't fall under the 0w30 Mobil 1 but they do on the 0w40. Was my understanding of it anyway.

0w-30 is an energy conserving oil whereas 0w-40 isn't and energy conserving oils are known to sheer down over time compared to non, so it's not suitable for such a long OCI.

Less startup wear when cold and more sheer stable under high heat and harder driving conditions which means less wear and less oil breakdown.

I think this is price/dealer driven. It is for me anyways. On the molecular level, and because most of us change our oil well before it's due, I think there is zero advantage to using one over the other...but then again, I'm not BOB. There is a slight difference here in the viscosity (0W vice 5W) with the 0W being LESS viscous.

The "30 vice 40" is just an indicator of the high temperature or operating viscosity properties.

TIP: In an older engine that was designed with larger bearing clearances, it is appropriate and recommended to use a thicker oil to maintain proper oil pressure and provide adequate bearing film thickness. This is also true for engines that have a lot of miles on them and the oil pressure is starting to drop off. By using higher viscosity oil, you can boost the oil pressure back to normal levels and increase bearing film strength.

So, would it be to our advantage with motors over 100,000 miles to use Mobil1 5W30 or even 10W40 and possibly the High Mileage Mobil 1?

These really are questions for BOB. I just use what's recommended and my Blackstone samples confirm what I use, and how often I change it. Every car is going to be different based on usage.

If you're changing your oil every 5,000km (3,100 miles) it might not matter as much, but why risk it? BMW dealer oil / Moible 1 @ Walmart / German Castrol on sale is so cheap, anywhere from $4-$7/quart. Also 3,100 is overkill IMO.

I disagree with a caveat. Under normal highway/city mixed driving daily I would agree. However, 100% city driving, short trips, cold weather, etc all play a part in whether or not that oil is going to last well beyond 3k miles.

I've performed UOA's at 3750 miles over the last two oil changes and both indicated a significant need to change the oil at that interval. Wear metals were up, oil had sheered down and the car had consumed oil, so if I were to extend the OCI, I'd have to add 1.5 qt or so. My driving conditions are exactly as I stated above. I drive about 2 miles each way in the morning dropping my kid off at daycare. Work from home so the car doesn't get driven much. When it does, it's mostly city driving. I'd be lucky to get 5k miles out of my oil.

I just recently switched to M1 0w40, was previously using Rotella T6 and both UOA's were less than stellar. Hoping M1 0w40 changes that. Additionally, I noticed significant reductions in valvetrain noise immediately after the oil change to M1 0w40. 2-3 seconds after startup that familiar valvetrain tick just...disappeared...

Washburn

Yeah - that's why I said 'in most cars' and not all...(I should've been more exact, said 'in most conditions' - but that's what I actually meant)
I don't disagree with you - under hard/extreme conditions, what you said is true.

Most of my driving is short city trips. 15 minutes in the morning. 15 minutes in the evening. Believe me, I wish I had more reasons to do highway driving. I figure two oil changes a year, no matter how many km I put on the car, is cheap insurance.

I think that's a good approach considering your situation. Don't want oil to sit too long even if it is synthetic.

awesome.

My ZHP has 129k on it - coming up on an oil change being needed within the next 1,000 miles (driving 200 ish miles/week). Will be considering switching from the BMW oil purchased at dealership to MObil 1 0W-40 after seeing this...

I know this is probably out there somewhere, and I did view the "oil thread" - just want a quick "yes/no" on this if possible.....

Has anyone switched from BMW oil (purchased at dealership) to Mobil 1 0-40? If so - any issues with the switch?

I appreciate the brief help, and look forward to switching now that I have read this (have been searching for Castrol 0w-30 german formula at AAP near me (south-central PA) and have found NONE. Mobil 1 0w-40 seems easier to find).

So, we have a lot of "oil threads" here as can be expected, but I'll respond on this one since it is on Mobil1 and the point I learned yesterday pertains to that.

At the BBQ/Garage/meet-up yesterday, the regional Liqui Moly guy was there. Of course he was touting his oil as the best out there (that can be discussed elsewhere if desired). He did point out that he was a fan of Mobil1 (#2 after L-M!) He cautioned that M1 from Walmart did not have the proper certifications for our cars and is not a certified LL (long life) oil. I was just in the garage and see that there is a difference in the quart and 5-quart bottles I have. (will post pics to this thread from my phone in a fews). He also said that he saw no need to use a 0W oil in the USA and that the main reason newer cars were calling for it was improved MPG as called for by the EPA, etc.

He also warmed against Castrol as the blend oils from other oil companies.

5-quart from walmart
