Car is almost ready. Has my slightly used Stewart WP, a new Thermostat, new Pullies, new rad and condenser. The bent core support was able to be pulled back into proper shape and they sourced a new Fan shroud from the dealer. The hoses and ET were recently changed by PO.

Front brake rotors and new control arms have been installed with new bushings...much to my dismay.
The umnitza bumper had been painted and is awaiting the fogs and the plastics. As well as a new splash shield and fender liners and brake ducts.

The passenger fender has been pulled and painted and for $100 they are overlaying the old and faded paint pinstripes with new silver vinyl stripes.

The old bumper made it to the trash and I will have some new fenders for sale as well as random other things off od the 328i.

Stay tuned for the finished product!

So today I was tasked with getting the 328i ready for sale.

It seems to be suffering from Toyota syndrome. Seriously...the throttle body sticks open for a little bit and if you floor it it will stay open until you shift into neutral.

Car is being sold with my hard engine mounts and trans mounts as well as the Poly Fcabs...all from AKG. The biggest regret is not being able to get the pullies off...such a simple performance upgrade I have to purchase all over again.

Car is going to CarMAX tomorrow and being sold for face value.

I've seen some dealers offer to beat Carmax for 500 to 1,000 dollars. All they ask is to see the estimate from Carmax. Is that an option for you ?

So what I was able to save were the performance grilles (glossy black) OEM, swapped out the custom Bixenon headlights for some stock halogens and got my long tube intake. I just wish I could have more time, but this car needs to be out of my life...its along the lines of sleeping with your ex while you are married to your wife.

No pictures this update but I managed to swap my power pullies to the ZHP. However, in classic Hornung fashion, this job was not without a setback.

Slept in til 10 and decided to play some ACIII before I had to do anything labor intensive. At noon, mom suggested I should get moving on anything I wanted to do to the 328 before we sell it on Tuesday. So I decided to tackle the pullies. For $200, you're damn right I'm keeping them.

Started with the 328i. I got everything out of the way in a few minutes and the pullies loosened. Pull the belt off and take the bolts off the pullies. The power steering pump always gives a struggle so I spend a good half hour trying to wiggle it off and eventually it frees itself.

Good. Now onto the ZHP. Everything went smoothly. The plastic pullies didn't break and the PS pulley came off without having to lift the car. Put the power pullies on and go to slip the belt on... come to find out that the tensioner doesn't have enough travel to slip the belt back on. I check with the 328i and it has full travel. Try again on the ZHP... no dice. It's sized.
Great. So I pull the unit and take it to the basement to take it apart. Comes apart and I couldn't get the spring mechanism apart... I was partially afraid and not strong enough. Go and get the other unit off the 328i and take it apart. The spring explodes out of the unit. "Oh fuck... What did I do?"

Start trying to press it together and it takes me a while and the assistance of my saint of a mother to get the clean base and the working spring unit back together. Bolt that shit down and get everything torqued down and give a test fire. She runs great! Job done.

Celebrating with a Chimay Blue. I still have to put the 328i back together but that is for tomorrow. CSLs are going to the storage unit tomorrow, and will hibernate til spring.

Hornung signing off.

So car is losing oil somewhere other than the VCG and OFHG. Possibly the CCVV.

Also losing some coolant. Which I found out is Green and not the Blue kind.

And several times a journey my headlights will flicker and about the same time the radio or DICE unit will cut out and then come back on.

Now I first though it was due to the extreme cold we've been having, but today on my way home it was 30° and clear. Hit a bump and they will flicker. Revmatch downshift and it will cut out the tunes.

Going to explore this soon, however if someone has any hints or has experienced this before, please let me know!

X2. Definitely top of my list for places to start. I had a problem where I would lose one halogen on trifecta light mod. Finally traced it down to the ground strip that tucks in behind the headlights (there are two of these, one on either side) but believe each side is grounded independently, so check whichever side is flickering first. Hope it's that simple!

Check the passenger side bottom of your vanos. I was losing a decent amount of oil from a bad CPS o-ring. Wasn't terribly obvious from a top end quick scan. CCV is certainly a good possibility, especially given the ridiculous cold this winter.

Here are the screen caps from INPA. Let me know if you think a singular fault is tripping all of them. Idle is loping and the engine is physically shaking when I look at it. My DSC and brake light are lit in orange at start up. It doesn't go away.

Justin,
I had the front bumper off of one of the cars for a day or two, the ambient temp sensor unplugged, it threw all kinds of error codes because the engine didn't know what the ambient temp was to feed the correct air/fuel mixture. Try the temp sensor first, it may solve some of your other problems.

I am actually planning to swap all the shit from the 328 on Sunday. I can't live with the fact that I'm leaking coolant and my radiator isn't really mounted properly square. Hopefully the weather is cooperative.

Swapped coils...and the misfire followed :( I'm sitting out in my car and it's 24 degrees. Now I have to wait for BMW to open to get the coil. Can't swap it between the 328i and the ZHP because the valve covers have different mounting points. but these are a hell of a lot easier to change than having to remove twelve 10 mm bolts holding the coils in. I love the sound they make when you pull them out. Thwunk!

Looks like the new coil part number has a fully insulated jacket. Wish I could do all six of em. But I bought this from the dealer for $61.73 after CCA disc. A lot easier than changing the plugs. Which by the way were replaced before I bought the car. Texted the P.O. last night and confirmed.

Stop me if youve heard this one before...tonight I used my car to escape from a crazed lunatic in a Jeep Grand Cherokee my way home from work.

Left work at 9 and I saw this guy speeding through a school zone son I flashed him twice and then I watched him swerve and dance on his brake pedal like he was just messing around and then he took off again. Okay thats fine stay the hell away.

I kept well near of him but eventually the flow of traffic lead me to be right up behind him.

He pulled onto the bank and waved me by. Well I waited for a que to build behind me before I went ahead so he would be well behind me, but he cut them all off and put his high beams on me.

Eventually hit a straight away and punched it all the way up to triple digits and he tried to keep up. Well he's eventually up my ass again as we come up on a slow right hander (20 mph). So he takes a beeline through the parking lot that is encircled by the road almost hitting me at speeds over 50 mph.

Now there's an four-way stop ahead and I'm back behind him. Signal to make a left turn although I intend to go straight. He turns right but doesn't travel very far. I supposed his intention was to back into me as I went through the intersection.

I had shut my lights off and was basically invisible behind a hedge row. So I crept up to the intersection and with my lights off I punched it through.

I can see this looney backing up very quickly, so as soon as I get clear I flip my lights on and high tail it out of there. Took a sneaky side road and just crawled to the main road.

The two eventually meet which is where my concern of seeing this guy again was greatest. So I'm super paranoid the whole way home. Just not what I needed after last night binge drinking and staying up til 6am and working 12-9...

It may well have been a deleted scene from the movie Duel. Great movie where a guy is being harassed by a tanker truck. The whole movie is a car chase.

Thanks for reading and stay alert!

Thanks, Rob. She's clamoring for a detail. This winter has been total shit for my new bumper. Already has several rock chips and a couple new ones on the hood. Going to see if I can get them pulled and painted when I respray my rear bumper. Next step for the interior is the whole bracket in the console as my ashtray door is riddled with finger nail marks. That's $98.00 at the dealer. Also going to be purchasing new pillars at the corners and maybe the B pillars.

Car will have all pillars removed as well as the rear deck and I will have the car professionally tinted. This color is bad ass with tints.

Also pictured earlier, but not installed today is the rear grid. Mine is all hacked up I guess from the previous tint install.

So as I'd hoped not to discover, my first ever encounter with a sunroof gremlin has come to light.

My passenger side sunroof driver is out of sync with the driver side sunroof driver. I heard a definite cracking sound after two consecutive sunroof tilts.

I can get it to meet the roof line if I don't close it all the way. But if it closes to the parked position it looks like this below.

http://img.tapatalk.com/d/14/03/05/8ypuqy7e.jpg

See how the passenger side is much lower than the roof line? So I tried recalibrating the unit by closing the unit and holding it until it tilts up. But from further reading that only seems to recalibrate the one touch opening/closing feature.

So it seems I may need to physically remove my sunroof cassette and repair it somehow.

Thoughts, comments, suggestions?

Yeah I've always wanted a sunroof-less car. But on a beautiful day when the sun is out and the weather is perfect opening the roof just makes life awesome.

I've priced out the carbon panels that fit in place, but I would need to remove the roof to weld in the proper roof bow that joins the B pillars. And if I'm removing the roof I would rather have a full carbon panel in it's place. Or OEM if I had to settle.

Which is why repairing the unit and greasing the tracks makes much more sense than any of the above.

Sunroof repair guide above looks really, really good. I pulled my glass panel out about a year ago to replace the broken slider for the panel below. Removing the glass was actually very simple - 6 of the T-25 bolts as I recall and it lifts out. I masked off the glass to be sure that I didn't accidentally nick it while turning a socket. Hopefully digging down further to repair your issue isn't much more challenging. E36 solid panels on the other hand are supposed to be a PITA.

Hornung418
03-05-2014, 10:04 AM
Okay, she's sitting flush now. Just undid the two rear most T25 bolts and pushed up on the glass and tightened them back down. When the weather gets nice, I will probably remove the roof and shade and do some PM on the tracks.

Is your sun shade still "tight" without any side-to-side play? Mine ended up being a bit loose, and turned out it was the broken shade clip. Wondering if maybe the small piece of broken plastic wedged in the track if your sun shade is loose.

Well I finally got around to fixing my headlights. Installed the passenger side EvoX-R projector and epoxied the e46R shrouds onto both sides. It was my first time using plastic weld of any kind. I made a fucking mess of it to, par for the course when I'm involved.

Didn't clearance the shutter solenoid well enough and got a wonky beam pattern, eventually diagnosed it properly and used the grinding tool on my Dremel kit to provide the necessary space for the solenoid. In other news, my high beam solenoid on the driver side is now inoperable after opening slowly and closing even slower. Obviously there is epoxy somewhere binding the unit. Can't wait to figure that out on Tuesday. It could be as simple as breaking the solenoid open with a screwdriver since it's all metal...but I could bend the shield. I'm such a putz sometimes.

Ugh...holding out on the wheels until this Sunday. It's barely above freezing today. Not getting much warmer plus we've got rain in the forecast for tomorrow and Friday.

Double water pump replacement complete. Definitely a failed unit. Internal seals were leaking. Glad it's done, on to the next issue.

Both headlights are finished and awaiting their bezels and lenses. Osram CBI bulbs will be going from the current set up to the new one.

Had to swap the ballast mount from the passenger side as the M3 piece was broken, but useable. However I want these to be perfect so since I had one on hand, I did.

Cut my finger and dropped a ratchet on my bare-foot...never a dull moment. However, no broken parts! (Knock on wood.)

Okay, Driver side is in CBI, bezel and lenses. Dremeled the ZKW mounting bracket so that I can reuse it for the ALs.

In the midst of this I also installed my long tube intake. So pumped to have the sound and added power. I can already tell it will be making some serious gains when the mixture gets calculated. I should clear the adaptations, the lag below 4k is pretty bad. but boy does it sound mean on the 3.0L!! No pics till both are installed. Need to level that side tonight.

Last DME update was from 26.10.2006. Looks like it worked. No battery tender needed. Used WinKFP to complete the task it took exactly 7 minutes to download and upload. Reset adaptations because it will run like a donkey if you don't.

Off for a quick spin.

Dude... looking at the program isn't enough to know how to do it. It's not a "hit this button to update your DME" process from what I can see...
So I have to look it up. Never used it before, gimme a break. :p

Me neither.

Anyways open the program. Hit F4 to enter your VIN. Hit F3 to update your ZUSB. It will ask for your VIN again to confirm. Then it will update :-)

Gents, thanks for the kind words regarding the wheels!! the fitment is effing perfect. No rubbing and everything is herra frush!

However, I just broke down and bought AKG 90A RTABs. shipping for overnight was $51.00...so I chose the $13 Ground option. Hopefully they get here at a reasonable time. Need to have an alignment done as soon as the RTABs are in.

I bumped the Tool Rental Thread, but if anyone on the East Coast has the tool, I would love to rent it from you and knock these things out.

My passenger side came out no problem, but my driver side wouldn't budge even with the tool. Wound up having to destroy the bushing with an air ratchet. They can be a PITA.

Soft to hard.

80A, 90A, 75D, Spherical, Solid Aluminium. They feel sturdy in my hand. Can't get them to flex much. But it's there. Cannot wait to have the bushings installed and the 75D engine and trans mounts to get rid of the nasty shifter movement under heavy acceleration. Hoping to tackle one of those tomorrow morning and the other on Wednesday.
