Went for a Chipotle run tonight...got the goods and headed home. It's pouring rain and in the right turn lane I hit a pot hole. Ugh not my new wheels.

Thinking I'll inspect them when I get home, I travel twenty meters and *beep* EML, DSC, SES, BRAKE all light up. Car stutters and it's herky-jerky. Idle is hunting actively...that clues me into the fact something is wonky with my fuel delivery.

It's 36° and raining...I'm near an advance auto, thank goodness. Pop the hood and listen to the engine backfire and miss. Locate the F-connector on the intake and see that the vacuum hose is ripped in half. There's my problem...

There is a dojo closer than the advance. Grab some athletic tape, get it connected as best I can and limp home.

M3 mounts are still rubber and filled. However they are stiffer then factory m54 mounts.

Other option is poly or the really expensive option. Imo m3 mounts will be fine for a good while. Plus they are affordable

It holds the engine in place when you drop the front subframe. So this comes in handy for removing engine mounts and changing the oil pan gasket among other things.

Replacing the engine mounts between cars was a total bitch. Thankfully I won't have to do it again. RTABs are good. Honestly the old ones weren't that bad. But I did it and its done. It was quite easy with the tool I rented from Marcus.

I need an alignment, but I scribed some lines beforehand to put them back in their previous positions. This should get me through the weekend. I intend to get an alignment after Monday should I have a day off.

75D engine mounts are also just as ridiculous as I remember. Loud, obnoxious, but most of all, I won't put a dent in my hood due to a broken driver side mount.

I didn't realize how little was involved with the OEM alarm system...I don't have one in the ZHP...but the 328i has one!! Guess I'll be taking that out tomorrow and swapping between.

Tonight I'm going to find out if you can disassemble the trunk handle so I don't have to buy/paint a new one. Corrosion has made it's way into the LP light terminals.

You can. You need to remove the innner trunk panel to unclip some stuff. Chances are you have a leaky trunk handle gasket. I have a similar problem and ordered a new gasket.

Wait...are they different part numbers between Pre LCI and LCI???

I got my 328i assembly separated only broke one clip on the painted piece. I can epoxy everything back together. And while I'm sure the gasket is toast, I'm going to see if I can get it to work before I spend more money at the dealer.

Today I was able to swap the necessary pieces for the alarm retrofit. Now my lights flash in sync with the door locks. Before, the lights would flash a few seconds AFTER the door locks engaged or disengaged.

However, I had to mount the siren with a zip tie while I wait for the body nut or prizal cage (how BMW refers to it) to be shipped to the dealer. Crossing that bridge when we get to it.

In other news! A gentleman that works at the dealer is interested in my 135s. I would be getting his sport wheels in place with a few bucks on my end. Then I can move the 328 with the style 44s instead of the 135s.

Great news...I broke both dash trim pieces on the radio and the passenger side. I used epoxy to affix the pin that connects the two together. But when I installed it, it snapped from the bond. While removing the pin from the brand new orange dash clip, it snapped the mount hole.

All of this while attempting my Bluetooth install. It didn't work out with my iPod connectivity. And after reinstalling the DICE unit it wont read my iPod. So now I just have the radio and two new dash pieces to buy...

Oxygen sensors replaced with new Bosch units. Followed the OEM replacement with the proper grey insulation for the rear and black insulation for the front. Weird why they are the same part but a different sheath.

151k miles on these. Looking forward to the improved performance from properly metered exhaust gasses.

I also have the fuel filter and fuel pump to do...but im going to wait for the pump to give up before replacing it.

Also looking to install the M3 fuel baffle. It holds 6oz of fuel so on long right sweepers it holds enough fuel to keep the pump from being starved.

Test drive confirms...no hesitation on cold start up at 2000rpm. Overjoyed right now.

So my suggestion is that you change your pre-cat lambda sensors if you are experiencing a stumble between 2-4k rpm after updating the DME software to the latest P/N.

I will keep tabs on this and make notes regarding loss of power not related to the DISA dip at 4100 rpm. I think it is solved however.

I've heard that is usually the next step after the DME update if issues persist. I hope my sensors are still good at 77k.

I'm gonna ask BP to remotely set up my SW suite tomorrow night. Hopefully I can get the new software on the DME the same night.

I've never coded a DME before so I couldn't answer that question. I do plan on updating my DME this week if possible.
What is the countdown you speak of? What method did you use to update your DME that changed the count of said attempts remaining?

I have not had to use a battery charger do any of my coding. It only takes minutes.

Good luck with the update.

SSS takes a long time just to boot and go thru the modules so I'll have to attach a tender to ensure voltage stays constant.

I don't see SSS offering that kind of option, knowing how it operates. We'll see, I guess.

Pump and baffle installed. Only mishap was forgetting to pull the plug and releasing the pressure from the line out. Dreading the filter install...after Rob's experience I don't feel like getting covered in gas again LOL.

So if you remember my post about my trunk handle being a POS and the gasket failing/LP lights corroding. I think I found a solution...The contact points are corroded so bad that they broke and won't hold the bulbs. These should work, right?

I'm not really sure. I feel like I'm being ripped off every time I look at BSW...There are plenty of speakers that will mount into the brackets that Crutchfield sells.

And then there is Helix...a new kid on the block. Seems to offer a direct fit for the tweeters and door speakers. I'm still looking, but I want my music loud and the distortion is killing me when I turn it up.

If they do charge, someone on the East coast that is looking to do headers can have these for $100. Which is what I paid. No discount, but you get them instantly no waiting for shipping :)

Stopped by the dealer to pick up the required hardware to do the swap. Set me back $101 with my discount. Purchased 16 copper nuts, two exhaust manifold gaskets with heat shields, and the exhaust gaskets after the down pipes.

Waiting for the ceramic paint to dry on the headers. Then install with new nuts and gaskets.

To cure the paint I have to idle for 10 minutes, then cool for the same. Idle for 20 and cool for the same. The last step is to drive for a half hour and let it cool for a half hour. Just want to start it already!!

Nice, how long did that take? Were the two rear nuts a pita?

Hornung418

For me, the process was surprisingly simple.

I lifted the car at 7:30 and got cracking. The hardest part was loosening the four flange bolts.

http://img.tapatalk.com/d/14/06/07/8yvesyqa.jpg

I got the two on the right off in a cinch. Cheater bar and the proper 15 mm socket. The left pair was a bitch. The nuts deformed and the 15 mm socket was just spinning. Hammered on a 14 mm and got one of...the other one sheared off and is stuck in the #14 socket.

I had taken the weight off the mounts with my support bar.

http://img.tapatalk.com/d/14/06/07/yzade8ud.jpg

From there I removed the engine mount arm.

http://img.tapatalk.com/d/14/06/07/vu5aqy7y.jpg

Four 13 mm bolts hold it to the block. The engine ground strap is a 13 mm bolt too. Remove the bottom engine mount nut and just pull the unit as a whole out.

That leaves you with a clear shot at all the nuts on the bottom. They are all #11 nuts. I had to use a spanner to get the two off on the rear of bank 2. I wish I had a ratcheting spanner for them...have a #10 and a #12 lol.

They sell a newer style flange bolt. Its $11 per...wasn't gonna spend $50 on four bolts. Hopefully the SS bolts I bought at the hardware store will suffice.

Legs got scorched when the sun rose over head. I was not concerned at the time...but gotdamn do my shins hurt!

So the fitment is off on these headers. I paid $40 for them from a kid in NJ. I wasnt expecting much in that regard. What I am shocked about is the number of "muffler shops" that don't do welding...

Found a guy who is open at 9 hopefully I get a call back.

I managed to connect a pair of flanges. The sound is really obnoxious. I felt bad starting it before 8am...

May be taking the van to work today.

Sunburn was worth it

http://img.tapatalk.com/d/14/06/07/eqyvede7.jpg

Can't tell if it's the fumes of unburnt gasoline or the noise it makes...but I went to a shop and we worked the exhaust into place with a double beveled spacer. Although...just headers was quite hilarious to drive with through town.

All told $65 to fix the fitment issue.

Exhaust is leaking at the flanges. I can hear it when I'm coasting in gear.

Going to have the headers chopped and rewelded to the stock position on tomorrow afternoon.

My flanges didn't mate well either, and mine were BB headers. Mine were off axis some...but not an inch from mating. If your going to the exhaust shop anyways and planning on keeping stock exhaust setup, I highly recommend getting them to put an H pipe in...otherwise it will be very tinney sounding...I put one in with my AR25s and it helped a lot.

Going to see what they would charge me for a full custom build. But first I need to get the header flanges to line up with the OEM exhaust location. From there we will determine the way to go.

I really hope Doug the exhaust builder has the insight to make the exhaust as best as possible.

Changed my brake lights today. Had a passenger side rocket booster to start the morning. Figured it was something with all the rain we got. Nope. Just a regular repair.

Appointment for exhaust is Friday at 8am. Hopefully we can lay out a plan to get things in motion for the 3" single.

Also in the works is a lil something special ;) maybe I will be able to debut it at Bimmerfest...

I busted the flange bolts when taking my exhaust off as well and drove around town for a few days with just the headers. It makes every other sound the car has ever made seem virtually silent. I ended up having the exhaust shop just do a 3in. straight SS pipe all the way back with a single glass-pack where the resonator was. I get compliments all the time about how it's the best sounding e46 they've ever heard, and I think the whole re-welding flange and straight back was roughly $100. Might be worth doing something similar a shot given the price point and see how you like it.

I drove around with catless headers no exhaust for 3.1 miles to the shop. That was obnoxious. If I had cats I wouldnt have worried abou the sound level. But I leave my house as early as 3am...so to be kind to my neighbors I will need a little bit quieter exhaust.

Yeah...thats what I'm freaking out about. Sure they guys need to get paid...but the second shop quoted me two days of labor. 16 hours at $45 per hour and $1000 in parts. Muffler, resonator, piping, mandrel bends, and clamps.

Looking into taking a welding class and using the tools there and my exhaust as a project for credit.

Not a bad idea. A friend of mine in SC learned how to weld and built his own headers and oil cooler for his Mini. VERY useful skill.

That's crazy pricing. I understand some of it is for the muffler and resonators, but if you remove that it's still crazy. I had an x pipe custom built by chopping the stock exhaust and it took two hours. That was building custom y pipes to converge and bending, fitting, etc. only cost ~$240 including materials. I can't imagine the other work to be that difficult other than creating hangers which an experienced guy could fab fairly quickly.

Hornung418
06-20-2014, 11:20 AM
Yeah...these are both speed shops. The first one is a renowned Porsche Racing Team/ Shop called At Speed Motorsports. The second shop is called MA-Motorsports. If you follow the drifting circle you will recognize the name Chris Forsberg. That's the shop that does his work.

Anyway. Now im considering buying e36 shortly headers and the bimmerworld 3 inch exhaust for the spec e46 class that has been newly created.

It's best to tack weld it on the car to get everything perfect then finish it off the car. Also it depends on the metal too: SS is going to be much more expensive and it takes different gas and wire to weld
