Ok I have 208k on my baby. Strangest thing is this. For the last 5-6 months (at about 180k) my car started eating oil. Mechanics I know shrugged it off since it was a quart every 1k which they claim BMW is known to eat oil. Funny since day one mile one it never ate any oil at all.
My temp gauge never showed off the normal 12 o'clock position but I started occasionally getting the coolant light when I reved up to get on the highway or if I ran her a little high in revs. It would show no temp signs on gauge and would go off before I could pull over.
Eventually it was getting more frequent and well I knew it was time well overdue for a waterpump, thermostat and radiator / hoses change since these were all original :> yea she's been a darling to me non of the normal water pump failures or other things I read.
So.... I replaced all this and now..... Back to normal. No longer eating oil.
Is this because my coolant system was in fact getting hot enough to burn off oil but not hot enough to cause warnings to light up or damage the engine? Never heard of this but its all I can come up with. Seeing coolant system is the only thing I touched.
