Need new wipers, but the sizes floating around on the web have me confused.

Driver: 22
Passenger: 19 (some posts say 20 for this??)

But I've also read numbers has high as 24... :shifty

What is the OEM spec?

Not sure about the after market but, BMW discontinued the stock refills last year, requiring you to purchase new wiper blades

I got 22 (driver) and 20 (passenger), but the passenger side seems about an inch too long. It works fine, but the tip doesn't rest flush on the windshield. Next time I'll get the 19 to see the difference.

Yep. Just picked up the newer model 3 series blades so I could get OE refills.

I've tried all of the frameless blades - RainX, Bosch, etc - and none of their 20 inch blades will work on the passenger side. I've had to go down to (I think) 18 to make their blades work. And I still don't think the tip was flush at the edge.

I have also tried aftermarket framed blades with the air spoilers (brand escapes me at the moment), but again, the passenger side didn't touch completely.

Been using OE blades for the last 9 months and results have been good.

I have used these wipers on my other cars and loved them

I just bought two sets of refills from BMW of Fairfax. Had to wait a few weeks for them to come from Germany though.

Just bought the el cheapo Trico wipers at Advance Auto for $36 total. 22" driver and 20" passenger.

The guy at the counter said "those aren't for your BMW and won't fit. The ones you need are special order and $44 each." I said, "well, I think I'll be just fine". The guy FOLLOWS me out to my car and watches me put them on the car. When they fit he was speechless.

He sort of mumbled to himself about not believing it if he hadn't seen it as he walked back inside.

I laughed.

So it was just the rubber or the whole blade?

That doesn't surprise me as I've had very similar experiences. Their computers typically say that the only thing that will fit our vehicle are to simply replace the rubber inserts on our stock blades or special pre-order when in reality majority of the higher end/ name brand wiper manufactures include different adapters with their blades to ensure fitment on the majority of vehicles. The auto parts guys tend to listen to the computer more than owners sometimes so I'm not surprised at his reaction lol.

When it's time to replace wipers, I usually go to Advance Auto Parts. They install for free ! But, I don't have specific info for the e46. For my Saab and Focus, I got the Rain-X brand recently. Didnt' rain yet, so I'm not sure about the noise.

Did you have any trouble getting the passenger side blade to lock in? I feel like a total moron saying this, but mine won't lock into place. I had no problem with the driver's side blade. It wobbles around. I am thinking I might have a bad mounting bracket.

Whole blades. sorry for the latent response, I lost track of this thread

I find aftermarket blades (except Bosch) to be hit or miss with the fitment of our blades. And the worst if you never know until you take it out of the package and try it. I had to return a whole set of blades right after opening them because of it. They were not happy.

Our wiper arms are apparently a thinner J-hook design that differs from the rest.
