Ok folks... After hanging out with William and Rando tonight (thanks again guys, always great to see you and get some Mafia time in while I'm out here on the ship), I decided to post this thread. We were talking quite a bit about William's new spacers and how he wants to go smaller by 3mm. I was explaining how I want to get my hands on a set of 10mm spacers for my rears to test fit and see how it'd look. So, I had an idea...

I'd like to start this thread to find out who has extra sets of spacers. I think its crazy to spend $50+ for a set of two spacers, only to find out that you need to go wider/narrower... So, this thread can serve as a place for people to post what they have or what they're looking for. For those that have spare spacers and are willing, I'd like to start a borrowing/swapping deal so that we can test fit to see what we may or may not want before buying. This is not a PERMANENT swap thread, just borrowing/loaning for test fitment only!

Rules as I would see them:

1. The borrower pays shipping cost. No reason these can't fit in USPS Priority Small Flat Rate box right or Priority Padded Envelope right?? Each cost less than $6 to ship.

2. You have 1 week to test fit and then return them back to the owner. This way others can have a chance as well.

3. If owner agrees, you can forward them to the next person in line (the third person will then pay you shipping, and whoever sends them back to owner pays return shipping).

4. The owners/loaners shouldn't inquire any cost as they're doing the rest of us the favor!

Of course, this all has to be based on trust in our Mafia family. I think this can be a great idea, but everyone has to be genuine and honest, which I believe we all are here! So, if you think this is a good idea, please post!

Lastly, if you have spacers to loan out, please post quantity and size!

That all being said, when I get home to Florida, I'd love to borrow a set of 10mm spacers (2) so I can test fit on my rears. :)

I'm thinking of buying some 12mm spacers from BimmerWorld during their 12 days of Christmas sale. If I buy them, you can certainly borrow them and try them, but it will be 12mm not 10mm. (You could also try my existing 5mm spacers but I assume that won't be enough to satisfy!)

Not sure if it helps, but here is 15mm on a sedan. I did have to roll to make them fit.

Dario,

Zactly... My current setup has my rear wheel face 15mm out from stock, and my front wheel face 18.4mm out from stock... So, your 15mm spaced OEM 135s are the same fitment as my current wheels... For some reason it looks different on your car than it does on mine... But I dunno...

LivesNearCostco- I would be interested in trying out your 5mm spacers... Of course, it won't be for another month or so... No rush on my end. :)

Perfect thread Jon.

I have been trying to figure out what size to go with.

Can I request that those who have spacers add pics much like Aviesto did above?

Hopefully this can help stance noobs like me narrow down an option before I start borrowing sets to test.

How do the lugs work? Ship with spacers?

I have a set of fives I can loan out at the moment. They'll be going on eventually though.

Well for test fit, I'm sure it'd be fine to loan without lugs... Unless of course someone is borrowing some huge spacers, then of course it'd be necessary.

Looking to see if anyone has any 8mm spacers that they'd be willing to send down to Florida for a test fit... I will of course return them, just looking to test fit before buying myself a new set.

You really need to install spacers and drive a bit to see where the suspension will settle before calling a rub or not.

Yeah I agree... But, no suspension was changed in the back, so no need to wait for anything to settle. The 10s rubbed like hell with only me in the car... The 3s fit just fine (had them on all day, no rubbing)... Looking to go wider, so I'll keep stepping it up until I find a rub, and then go back down one step. :)

Its no different than having a 6mm spacer on there. The important part is still having some exposed hub for the rim to center up/ride on... I measure hub depth at 13mm, so this still leaves me 7mm to play with. I'm fairly confident in that. I also swapped to the extended lug bolts at this width...

Yeah, I spoke quite a bit with one of the guys at TMS and he mentioned vibration being an issue if there isn't enough lip. Basically, the weight is now supported by the lug studs, vs the wheel hub...

TMS sells hub extenders for the front, no real need for me though... As you can see, my front wheels are PLENTY wide as it is... No need to go any further...

derbo
04-04-2014, 05:09 PM
The problem is that I need 3mm for clearance. Hub extender seems to be a problem if I constantly need to remove it when I switch rims.

My ARC8 needs a 3mm spacer for clearance issues.
ZHP rims need about 5mm but am running a 12.5mm for the lip since a 5mm has issues even with a hub extension.

I do not want to push out the ARC8 anymore than I have to. If I do a 10 or 12, that is alot of spacing out the front that I dont need. This means the rear will look even more weird LOL. I think the true fix is get 17x9 +42 rims but...uhm yea..thats a big expensive fix.. :X

Is this due to lack of concentric ring on the spacers or simply to do with the thickness?

Yes, Turner has an article about spacers under 10mm for the front, they recommend hub extenders for that depending on the size, etc.

Yup, but I think the ones I originally ordered and paid for back in December were the BWsport silver spacers with smaller, round cutouts. They still sell it in the 20mm size (see picture below). These new ones are black with bigger cutouts, larger gap around edge (to allow prying off if stuck) and a more skeletal look, presumably weigh less. I think BW changed suppliers, or designed and had these made recently to replace the ones they were selling before.

Here's what the old ones looked like in 20mm and new ones in 12mm

Just saw this thread and am quite confused on the point of spacers? I'm getting that they are used so there's enough space in the wheel well it get underneath or so they stick out? I just need a lesson on everything wheel and tire based, after getting into looking at all of the setups it gets me so disoriented.

Sorry I'm a stupid newbie, your all probably laughing at this response

Not laughing at all! You have to learn somewhere.

I believe the reason our wheels are sunken in is because German Manufacturer Rules/Laws require some space between the fender and wheels to allow for snow chains to be installed easily.

There are many reasons for spacers.

Main ones I can think of:

Clear suspension or brake components that are too close to the existing wheel
eliminate the gap mentioned above and allow for a flushed look.
Convert to a different lug pattern.

Alright so I was on the right track but in the next month or 2 I will be getting all new tires and wheels and want to upgrade to 18x8.5 style 313 from the 17x8 style 68. Will this work with staggered approach on tires. Now I think I have 225/40 front and 245/35 on the back

Welcome to the fun world of wheel/tire sizing! I cannot recommend these two sites enough: BMW-Treff Felgenkatalog (http://felgenkatalog.auto-treff.com/) for OE BMW wheel specs, and Will They Fit (http://felgenkatalog.auto-treff.com/) for wheel/tire/offset sizing calculations and visualization.

Pip

The tires will work, but you'll have to accept that the 225 will be stretched on the 8.5" rim until you wear thought it. Fitment can be figured out using what Crickett mentioned above. It should be fine because it is sunken in 2mm from the stock zhp wheels which fit just fine. If anything you could space them out a little for a more flush look.

johnrando
05-15-2014, 10:06 AM
For most uses, spacers = looks, pushing the tires out a little. Everything else said below is true but it's a lot about looks. People also say a wider stance with the spacers/tires = better handling, which could be minimally true. But others counteract saying it could introduce other potential issues due to adding another component. It's what you choose to believe and what your use is. No doubt there are things like a BBK that you can't use stock tires with unless you have spacers. In the end, there are positives and negatives, and mostly good things depending on what you want to do.

Update:

I current have 8.5 +40 Rims.

Currently I am using a 12.5mm spacer in the front because I need to clear my brakes. I think the actual minimum to clear the brakes is actually 5mm. Since I have the front sticking out right now I tried Joop's 10mm Spacers in the rear.

Effective Offset:

Front: 8.5 +27.5
Rear: 8.5 +30

This is how it looks.

http://i.imgur.com/A96sVBsl.jpg http://i.imgur.com/AqDKI6Pl.jpg

The rear fenders are rolled and I rub inside the fender not the actual fender lip.

Anyone have a 5mm or 7mm spacer to send my way to try out?

Found yesterday my BimerWorld 12mm spacers do not fit in the small flat rate box--just a little too big in diameter. I forgot to order some padded flat rate envelopes, will do that now. My extended lug bolts are only for 3mm or 5mm spacers but I now have my old 75mm studs to loan too. Waiting for Gary to see if he needs them!

Edit, found the padded flat rate envelopes at USPS.com, ordered pack of 5. But it says takes up to 7 days to get them. A good deal... only $5.95 for the padded flat rate envelope vs. $5.60 for unpadded flat rate envelope vs. $12.35 for medium flat rate box.

The whole point is to make sure the spacer will not introduce vibration by too small of a lip. The load introduced to the studs is probably not a good idea either. I would use spacers to test what size I need, but beyond that, I wouldn't drive on them.

This is on the factory ZHP 8.5 rear? I rubbed a little with 8.5 +40 255/35/18 but I was lowered with no fender gap at all. I say you don't need to roll much, maybe just fold the inner lip so it doesn't flare out too much.

Anyone have or know who has my TMS 10mm spacers? I am home now and I'd like to locate them so that I can get my hands on them again. Thanks!

Also, still looking for a set of 7s or 8s if anyone has any to swap.

I still have them. Shoot me your address and I'll ship them out tomorrow.

Not really. Sold my ZHP so I'd have no use for them.

I should have a pair of 10mm Burger Tuning spacers with black lug bolts available after this weekend. We current have 15mm spacers in place with these lug nuts but going to studs and fancy lug nuts this weekend GIPS everything arrives in time. LMK if anyone is interested in a set of 10mm with lug bolts.

FWIW - Noticed this morning that Burger Motorsports (Burgertuning.com) has all their wheel spacer sets on sale for $99 and that includes the extended lug bolts.

Are you adding spacers? You don't need extended lugs just for wheels.

Oh for sure. I will prolly run them even with the 7mm spacers. Which I still have to order btw.

I would say 5mm is an either way situation. If I had them I would run them, but if not, I wouldn't let it stop me from installing and driving the car. Definitely run them at wider spacers, less than 5mm not a huge deal.
