View Full Version : Wet carpet on driver's side - no moonroof car

I noticed the carpet is wet under the floor mat on the driver's side of my AT sedan. Most of the posts I see point towards the passenger's side and leaking sunroofs. I have a slick top. Any ideas?

Vapor barrier in the door is another cause. Take your door panel off and inspect it for tears/bad seal.

Vapor barrier fo' sho. I've had to take my passenger door apart more times than I'd like to mention.... Need to go for a new seal next time around. Blech stuff is gross when it's hot out.

Thanks. 'll get the requisite fixer stuff on hand and dive into it later this week. I don't want to take it apart and find out that IS the problem and not be able to repair it. (Hoping it doesn't need to be replaced).

Butyl tape or black silicon stuff from permatex will help seal it. I had this issue when I took off the vapor barrier for the window regulator. FYI for anyone doing the regulator make sure to leave the bottom of the vapor barrier in tact while doing the fix.

I ordered the tape via amazon prime (affiliate link). I see PO had the regulator fixed. I wonder if the shop didn't put it back together right (or damaged it).

Having a similar issue myself. I opened up the door panel and I resealed the vapor barrier with 3m double sided tape and then I investigate some more while it still leaked in the exact same spot. I am thinking this is my problem, I have no idea how this got messed up

This is to show exactly where on the car I am referring

Hmm. I'll take a look. No problem on your posts. Maybe someone here can assist.

Interesting spot. I'll have a look on mine as well

Make sure to check your windshield seal as well. I know it's mounted in a different way than the old school windshields, but a bad seal on the windshield was the reason I had the exact same issue in the 02 and E21.

Mine was just replaced a few weeks back. Hopefully it wasn't a bad install.

Did it leak before windshield replacement? If not that would be my first place to check

I don't know. Just noticed it. Will have to check the door and rule that out I suppose.

It is likely vapor barrier as others have said. Unfortunately, when novices, or in my case moron dealers, DIY the regulator job, they don't replace or reattach vapor barrier

Thanks. so is it (usually) just a matter of taping/sealing the bottom of the barrier?

That vapor barrier runs all the way around the door card.

If it's the barrier you will notice a section that has become unstuck from the door. Just press it back in place or replace the seal gooey stuff to be safe. I'd be surprised if it were actually torn. And most likely the bottom is what's letting water in if anything.

Thanks. I tried a water test on the door and then windshield but couldn't tell it penetrated. Maybe a gallon isn't enough. Tape should arrive tomorrow--along with rain and a wintry mix.
