Havenot seen this pop up, so when I had car in for recent service noticed this gasket was going bad
Not sure how big a deal it was but it keeps stuff out of the A/C and engine bay. Turns out fairly minor part. 5171-8232894 about $60 same for all our cars and took the shop about 2 hours as lots had to come apart. I'm sure it's a DYI project if you have time. I had it done while on a business trip. Results are

The shop said it took 2 hours. Ugh!! Take the 2 wipers off, snap the old one off, snap the new one on, reinstall the wipers. Takes maybe 15 minutes.

Yup, it's a no biggie. 2 hours, sheesh! Glad you got yours done though.

Probably just took total time including some other diagnostic work like pressure testing for coolant leak ;) .. but looking at the DYI it's not 15 minutes either. The shop overall is always been fair so I don't triple check the details.

I am going to attempt this during my next parts order. My biggest concern is getting those wiper arms off and on again. What I have read about people doing it makes me think its not always that easy.

One of the reasons the wipers are hard to pull off is because they're being pushed against the windshield with the spring. Make sure they're off the windshield so there's torque on the shaft and pulling them off will be much easier.

Yup. The wipers are either easy or a major PITA because they are stuck.
Before you take them off, put some painters tape on the windshield underneath the blades and draw a line with a sharpie where the blades rest. This way you won't have to guess on the position on re-install.
I've done it twice now and I doubt it would take more than 1/2 hour unless the wipers are stuck.

No problem! I work for beer so it's probably going to take 3-4 hours.

See how William pads his hours and overcharges for beer? Just put the tape where the wipers are and you don't have the draw the line. That saves an hour right there! :)

Hah. He just needs to pick his poison.
I am surprised that BMW didn't put some kind of tab on the wiper post so that the arms only slide on and off at the right position. Maybe there is a reason why they didn't.

I'm glad they didn't. I think I've adjusted each of the 6 BMW's we've owned one notch further down. It hides them just a little more when looking out the windshield.
