Tranny swap is very challenging on the e46 according to my research. Outside of cost, apparently you'll throw a tamper dot on the odometer due to the dme not matching some other involved module. That was the non-starter for me.

And you need to change a lot more parts than you'd initially realize - the differential was a surprise to me though it probably should have been common sense.
