New member needing help. 2004 ZHP 6MT sedan. On my way home tonight I noticed the idle was getting a bit rough. I popped the hood as soon as I got it into the garage and heard this god awful knock coming from the clutch area. Not really sure what to think of it?? TOB? Flywheel coming apart?? It goes away when the clutch is depressed.

On an outside chance, look for a loose exhaust bracket. Specifically the one by the post cat o2 sensors.

I currently have an exhaust clamp loose, but the sound is nothing like this. It's far more metallic and "ticky" if that makes any sense.

Anything unusual happen that might be related to this?

There's been no issues since I purchased it last November. The maintenance history was non-existent but it seems like a pretty solid car. I wouldn't think that at 80,000 the clutch would make this kind of racket but anything is possible!

Perhaps the flywheel is aftermarket? Were there a lot of mods on the car when purchased?

Visually everything is stock. I'm going to jack it up tonight and see if I can isolate the rattle.

Also could just be a bad guibo/flex disc. Mine was bad and I felt a lot of vibration till I fixed.

That sounds like the clutch flywheel scraping. A slight chatter is normal for a light weight flywheel, but that doesn't quite fit the bill of chatter. Does the noise go away when the clutch is depressed?

My other thought is your pilot bearing is getting ready to go.

Sounds like your flywheel is about to crap out. Mine rattles a bit but this one sounds like it's really shaking in there.

I would also guess maybe input shaft? My E30 had some trouble with that.

Also, check your gear oil. My E30 made some awful sounds at idle in neutral. Sounded like marbles in a paint can. I added some gear oil and it went away.

After lifting it up and listening closer it seems to be coming from further back in the tranny like it lost a bearing maybe. Regardless it looks like I'm pulling it out.

Update:
I just finished up replacing the flywheel, clutch, pressure plate, throw out bearing and and added a BMW Performance SSK while i was in there. So far it sounds great.

Glad to hear it's working. Keep us posted, I hope it stays that way.

Wow, good work. Hopes it solved it and you like the SSK.
