please help me diagnose this. Is it the main blower fan behind the passenger air filter?

I too have this sound. Diy looks easy. I did this on my e30 and I remember the hardest part was hooking the strap back up.

If it changes depending on the fan speed or if it's on or off I would say the blower motor is a safe bet.

If you do end up replacing the motor, use the one from the first gen X3. It's much cheaper and it works great. Search for the thread for more info.

I had this same noise on me E46. It would happen randomly, but the first time it occurred was when I was doing a somewhat long (5-6 hour) drive on snowy/salted roads. I always suspected some dirt (salt?) got into the fans or motor, but never got around to taking the thing apart to fix it.

Mine is intermittent. Only does it every once in a while. Does vary with fan speed.

If you do end up replacing the motor, use the one from the first gen X1. It's much cheaper and it works great. Search for the thread for more info.

X3, you mean?
