View Full Version : Which maintenance should I do first/next? What would you do next?

Want the family's general advice on maintenance and mods. Over 4 years of ownership, I have done most of the standard maintenance for my car: GAS DISA upgrade, Beisan VANOS seals, FCABs, RTABs, VCG, OFHG, CCV, FSR, fuel filter, guibo (twice), CSB, cooling system (except water pump, which was replaced at 75K), etc. Everything should be solid on maintenance except the plastic coolant/water pipes and the oil pan gasket. Mods include coilovers with camber plates, front swaybar, Shark Injector, aFe intake, pulleys, and lightweight wheels for track.

Trying to decide what to do next. I want to emphasize reliability, then handling, then cosmetic/appearances, then power. I'm considering...

TRS headlight retrofit--already ordered kit
Water pipe/return pipe. One appears to be slowly leaking. Requires removing intake manifold.
Oil pan gasket and baffle. Oil pan seeping. Already bought parts. Baffle requires finding someone who can weld aluminum.
AIM Solo or Solo DL for data acquisition at the track
New OEM harmonic damper, as preventative maint. on theory the old one must be worn out
Rear subframe bushings and epoxy reinforcement plates (already have bushings but not reinforcements or epoxy)--current bushings appear in decent shape
Coby wheel--current steering wheel cover is worn and tattered
Cat-back exhaust--am only interested if it increases power, not for sound
Bimmerbrakes headers, or Magnaflow manifolds w/cats that might flow better than stock

The ZKW HID retrofit is the obvious since I've paid for the parts, but what next? Oil pan leakage is annoying but livable, and might not seem to messy if replacing the water pipe stops a slow coolant leak. Just seems like a huge effort to R&R the intake manifold, and bigger effort to remove oil pan, clean it really well, and take it to a welder.

Assuming I can do one of these every 2 or 3 months. What would you do first?

I suppose the only thing I don't see on the list is the fuel pump.

Why was the guibo replaced twice?

Looks like everything else seems fine imo.

PO replaced fuel pump around December 2009, somewhere between 56K and 96K miles ago. I replaced fuel filter 2 years and 23K miles ago. Three possible reasons the guibo installed March 2010 was starting to fail at after 34,000 miles:
1) My indie's mechanic didn't line up the bolts and arrows correctly (he didn't)
2) That's just how long it lasts given how I drive
3) Failed CSB wrecked the guibo (I went after CSB thumping and saw cracks and exposed threads in the guibo)

When's the last time the sparks have been changed?

Mileage of the car?

Car has 187,000 miles and spark plugs changed at 156,000 miles. Coolant, transmission fluid, diff fluid, tie rods, diff bushings, transmission mounts, starter, flexible brake lines, and rear control arm bushings/bearings all changed recently. (Note the rear control arm bushings/bearings all seemed to be in good health and probably didn't need changing.)

Lowest (high-pressure) PS hose is very oily but can't tell if it's oil from oil pan gasket or if it's leaking ATF, or both. I replaced all 4 PS hoses at different times, but the high-pressure one is the oldest, replaced 4 years and 52K miles ago. VCG and OFHG were also both replaced 4 years and 52K miles ago but do not appear to be leaking. I can't believe I've had the car for more than 4 years now!

New sparks for fun then! :) have you repsrayed your rear deck at all?

Im going to do the oil pan gasket on my car. Not sure if the baffle is worth it

Can you post some pictures of the oil pan baffle? I am now considering if i should get one.

I finished the headlight retrofit. Next up on the list is likely the water pipe and heater pipe, since I bought those parts and a new intake manifold gasket.

Oil pan baffle not worth it for street driving. May or may not be worth it for track--some say just overfilling the sump by one quart is enough to prevent oil starvation in M54. OTOH some say on a serious E36 track car with really sticky tires, the baffle is not enough and you need to convert to dry-sump or dual-pickup system. I'm guessing the answer is in between--stock pump, stock pan, but enhanced baffle. (Apparently there is a really tiny OEM baffle in there.)

Yeah I have not decided 100% on the baffle and if its worth the money. I would be looking at $200 for the baffle and install into the oil pan.
