funny ZHP anecdote...

so after church yesterday we went over to a friend's house for lunch. he loves cars but has always been timid of owning something truly sporty, so i always ask him if he wants to go for a drive (just trying to share), to which he always says 'yes, please!' :)

so yesterday we went for a drive in the ZHP. we chatted as we set off and once the car was warm, we hit a good twisty road. he was completely silent for about 4-5 minutes as he hit 6800rpm several times and lots of fast sweepers - then he slowed down and said, "peter... your [Audi] S6 was a nice car, but this.... this is a GREAT car!" he went on about the brakes, the steering, etc.

needless to say, he is now considering a used 2004-2005 330i with at least the sport package for his next car. :)

1st gen (C4). it was a 1996, which only canada got, mine was 1 of 106 built for 1996 (in any spec). cool car, built to last a lifetime (the ZHP pales in comparison, build quality-wise), but absolutely lousy steering. i think the rack ratio was 18.9:1, not to mention there were 5 inline cylinders (glorious as they were) mounted ahead of the front wheels. but what an engine!

yep, the C4 S6 had a 2.2L I5 from 1992-1997. technically it was an 'S4' from 1992-1994 and was renamed the 'S6' in 1995 to coincide with the advent of the 'A6' moniker.

absolutely awesome engine. derived from their WRC cars in the mid-80s. mine was around 290hp when i sold it, but there are guys running 400hp+ on the stock bottom end.

well, back when this car was developed, the direct competitor was the E34 M5. it was far tamer in comparison, but better built. the sticker on mine was $64K CAD in 1996. ironically the M5 has a much higher resale value at this point.

Read somewhere that for example, the A5 is matched with the E92 328i, then the S5 with the E92 335i, and the RS5 with the E92 M3.

Great story, thanks for sharing. I used to own a 2002 S6 and I agree, the ZHP was a lot more fun to drive. The S6 had this great exhaust that showcased its grunty V8, but the ZHP was actually faster and much more tossable. You felt every bit of the S6's hefty weight.

S6 was a cool car though. I called mine the "murder wagon" or "Mordwagen" as it was black with black tinted windows and a menacing growl from the exhaust.

Installed my coilovers this weekend with a buddy of mine.

While I was at his house we realized how much better a baby seat fits in an e46 than an e36 M3.........

My friend is now on the hunt for a ZHP.....we may go look at one this weekend.
