brake rotor rust

Hey guys, I got new brakes put on recently. Used stoptech pads and oe (genuine bmw) rotors. Having major issues not with performance, but with rust on the rotors. Every time I wash the car or it rains, this orange dust appears on the rotors, which then wick off all over the wheels when I drive away. It basically defeats the purpose of detailing the wheels. It's driving me freaking crazy.

Any remedies? There has to be some sort of spray on rust prevention stuff right?

I believe there is a product that helps with the rust, but you can also coat the wheels with wheel protectant which should keep it from sticking to the wheel too much.

Rotors is made out of cast iron. It's just prone to rusting. Brake pads will always create a new surface on the rotor brake surface. If you use some sort of protectant on the brake surface area, it will disappear the moment you apply the brakes. Dario's suggestion to use a wheel wax or wheel protectant is the best bet here. It will allow you to wipe it off your wheels with min effort.

I think stoner makes a spray that helps some. It's a pain; especially on the 135s that are hard to clean.

The last time I changed brakes, I used Brembo rotors that had a rust inhibiting coating and know I'll use then on the ZHPs next brake job. Not sure if this is what i bought or if it applies to all Brembo rotors but, a good point to start. Note: I purchased them from Tirerack and they were just Brembo standard solids.

Have bought my brake stuff from Ray (Smilez) and don't have this problem. Yes, right after washing the rotors get surface rust but take a quick spin around the block & it goes away. It also might be different because I only use ceramic pads too.

It doesn't take much to get that off after a wash, usually is gone from backing out of my driveway at low speed...

Just remember its a temp solution.


This is currently is the best solution that we know of to prevent rust from happening to the rotors during your washing and detailing. This is not a permanent solution, the rotors will rust after you drive in the rain or they get wet.

I've given up on clean wheels. Hard braking just makes them dirty in a few minutes.. :(
