View Full Version : Best ZHP exhaust?

Hey all,
I was wondering if you guys run different exhaust systems on your car. What is your favorite? I want it to be a bit louder but not fart cannon or ricey :applause2

I just have stock+Gruppe M intake. It sounds so good that I haven't even bothered installing my headers yet.

I was very happy with SuperSprint (full system, incl the damn headers), I realllllly like the sound of the Rogue Ikon (the quieter version) If I were to do a non-M again, it would be remove front res, leave the second and then the Ikon II....nice growl, no resonance in the interior and you can hear it but not annoyed by it

If you want to try the less expensive way - try removing the front res first and leave the rest as stock

I'm also looking to do the same but not going for the whole new exhaust. What is involved if i take out the first res? I'm also going to get a new intake sometime so, possibly the gruppe m or something else.

oh, and CEL if you don't get a tune - and if you live in area with emissions testing - your car will become a headache to get it passed

but, everyone has an opinion and they have read others say they have done this or that and passed - or don't have emissions...but that doesn't get rid of the smell, the hacked exhaust (although you can remove the first resonators and install the aftermarket high flow cats 200cell or 100cell in that location)

Why such disdain for headers? I love mine. Headers back to two AR 25s with an H pipe and then stock second res and stock zhp muffler...I love the sound. Plus the power is fantastic

Stuart, the E46 goes headers and cats, into a large resonator, then a smaller resonator then it dumps into the rear muffler?

I have a rear resonator delete and dinan muffler and the tone is nice and subtle. Very tame but has some noise when you really get on it.

I would also like to hear this video. And I might do a resonator delete. But y'all say it wouldn't pass emissions? Perhaps I could fabricate a cover to go around the pipe to make it look like there's a resonator there...

anything post cats does not effect emissions

There is only one resonator and its in the middle. The other two boxes are both classified as mufflers.

I like my car with headers + the stock exhaust. But everyone is different..

To answer OP's question I have to say I agree with Stuart, just delete the first resonator.

To answer what the 'best exhaust' is, that is a personal question as people have different opinions as to what they want in an exhaust. For me it would be either ITB's or P54 intake, long tubes, 400 cell cat under the trans, and single exit in front of RR wheel

Edit: and I have a Perfomance Intake, Dinan throttle body, UUC TSE3 cat back

derbo

Stock catalytic convertors cannot be positioned more than 6 inches away from the original location for california emissions laws. This is an automatic visual fail.
If you can manage to remove the visual inspection failure from the equation, you can position the cats in section 1 underneath the car. Extending your O2 sensors and hoping the stock tune will not throw a CEL is possible, but most likely you will need tune to make sure it doesn't CEL out.

There is a good amount of work involved and I suspect alot of people do not want to do this just for "clean" power.

I personally like the TSE3 as it is loud enough to be fun, but quiet enough for a conversation during the freeway. :)

It definitely has more power, and that for a fact is not made up. Yes I have an automatic and headers and it's not uh "drone" city. It's very clean sounding, and exactly what I like. Please feel free to view my exhaust video in my project tread (albeit it was before the added resonators and h pipe). And what does age have to do with anything? You must be wise beyond your years to bring age into a conversation about headers. Why are you trying to start a flame war? That's not typically what we do on this forum...and you've been here long enough to know that...

I have the full AA setup from headers to muffler sans the cats and I live in NM and I'm from VA so no inspections for worry about. I like the sound it gives, especially with the intake to balance it out. Check out my AFE Intake review in the Storefront/Product reviews section to hear it. I will say that my exhasut not what anyone would confuse for quiet above 2500-3000 and higher in the band it sounds wonderful. But below 3k or so it's polite and reserved.

Personally though, I reaaaally like the sound the magnaflows give. But I'm a car parts monger so a grain of salt should be added to this lol.

I have the Corsa cat back exhaust. I think it sounds great and it's very quiet at cruising/highway speeds. When you get into it, it has a nice sound. What's cool about it is that it's a strait through design.
Kpro also has this on her 135 with cat less down pips and an Agency Power mid pipe. It's still quiet at high way speeds but when she gets into it, man does it sound awesome!

Edit: Corsa and UUC TSE3 are the same thing

Have a KN pod intake. Sound is pretty good up front. Seems BMW are some of the only people with more good noise up front rather than out back. I like the ZHP exhaust, and being in California I cant modify the headers. What effects would that first muffler/resonator delete have on the sound? Just louder, or more rasp? If possible I just want a little more volume but not particularly the full M3 rasp

Keep in mind I don't have the exhaust (yet lol waiting for the next sale) but I have heard it in person many times. It has a little more rumble then the stock exhaust and gets noticeably louder once you get up the rev range. JOOP has the exhaust so he would be better at giving you a description. It isn't raspy and it doesn't drone plus it says Dinan... :)

This video isn't great because of road noise... But it works I guess. It isn't a loud look at me exhaust that's for sure. It's closer to stock but with more oomph. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n5sVgKoEjOM

There's a bone stock white E46 M3 at work I have seen recently. The thing has the sweetest sound. Better than my car. I thought the M3s sounded too rough but I think that's because most are screwed up by kids who think they make them better by slapping a fart can on the pipe.

Nice and quiet on the highway and no drone, though! Only loud when you wanted it to be.
