View Full Version : Gauging interest in non-M E46 Billet Dipstick?

johnrando
08-15-2014, 10:48 AM
All, this beautiful E46 Billet Dipstick is for M's only. I've asked the manufacturer and they said if we ordered Qty 20, they would produce for non-M. Please let me know if you are interested. I have no affiliation with the company, I just like the look of that dipstick. Below is their website. I've include a pic. The M price is $39.99. I'm going to post on multiple forums. Thanks.

EDIT: I posted here, e46fanatics, bimmerforums, and bimmerfest. Anywhere else? Maybe someone on here who's interested can go one those sites and express interest there instead of here.

Gotta watch the spending for the next couple of months. As nice as they are, I don't mind missing out on it if this happens sooner than I'm ready.

If they ask for the money a few months from now then I'd say put me down!

...I'll ask Charlie who has an M and a ZHP to comment, as he recently bought one for his M and that's the first I ever heard of these.

John, this is what I posted over at E46Fanatics......

A friend of mine who recently got an R32 clued me to Gruvenparts and thought I would like to have one of their dipsticks since it would only add to my engine compartment bling...:) Cost of this part wasn't too bad so I pulled the trigger on it. Here's what the part looks like :biggrin

http://i395.photobucket.com/albums/pp37/macdctr/M3/Dipstick/IMG_1641_zps41b870b5.jpeg

i'd ask again those M people how they like it. I recall some of them mentioning it gets super hot. so much so they had to use gloves to pull the dipstick out because it retains heat for a while.

Yes Alex, the dipstick does get really hot when you have been running the car for quite some time so if you have to check the oil level it would be prudent to have either a rag or shop glove so you won't burn your hands... afterall, the handle is made out of billet aluminum...it will transfer heat...

My overall impressions of this dipstick after having it a week is good. I like this part and it does add to what I have going on with my engine compartment. It looks clean and is easy to see the oil level. There are two o-rings on the handle part, just like the OE dipstick and oil does not leak by. Overall, I feel the company did a great job making this part. The only down point about this dipstick is that it's only for the ///M. If the company made another for non-Ms, I'd be all over it for my ZHP :thumbsup

Awesome Charlie, thanks!

Great news!
They are moving forward with this. They are posting a pre-buy on their site this Monday. The price point s/b within $5-$10 of the M one (at $39.99), but wait until they announce for the final price.

All, I was told the price s/b within $5 - $10 of the M version, which is $39.99. We also have 3 - 5 from e46f.c, and 1 or 2 from other bimmer forums, so they are going to move forward. I'd like someone else to give me the dipstick measurement not including the handle, in mm. Thanks!

Rando,

It is 23in not including the handle which comes out to 584.2 mm.

Now that I'm looking at it more I would rather just have an OEM one with a billet handle. That would just mean finding a BMW one that was longer and fabricating / attaching a billet top to it.

ehh...I'm interested in this because of the looks and the fact that it will be easier to read than the OEM one which is atrocious. Good job Heimlich and Klaus...what color is used motor oil...dark brown/black...perfect color for the dipstick!

Plus - this may a good solution for the aging OEM dipstick where it cracks at the thinnest areas and separates into 3 or 4 individual pieces

You'd think for a close to $1000 order, they could go buy a stock dipstick and measure it themselves. And then if they don't actually use it, they could return it to their local dealer for no loss of funds, just saying.

I didn't realize this was the case and now it makes sense that they would just want the overall length to double check that they in fact have the right one.

In the pics I posted, I measured from the bottom of the stop (handle), from there it's 608mm to the tip.

Any dipstick from an M54 is the appropriate one...I'm having a hard time believing that we are making a big deal out of measurements. Plus to add to the discrepancy, a used dipstick is more than likely to have broken and moved from the original measuring position.

There is a thread on e46f.c that indicates that the new OEM dipstick is a different length the our original ones, even though it's the same part #, so this is just to ensure accuracy. If the length is wrong, of course your reading will be wrong.

I basically told Gruven that we had 20 so invest the time to look into manufacturing it, and that's in motion. I'm going to hold off a bit see where this goes. I'm almost sure I can get this done at half your guys cost. Roughly 25 bucks but would really depend on what kind of "stem" the traditional rod or the braided one. Living in Cali I have bunch of connects, however, on my end I would have to have like a 50 min order. ( I wouldn't need 50 orders from you guys just about 20)

Like I said, I would hold off for now. I don't like to just come in an take competition away, even more when it wasn't my idea to begin with. To top it off, you took your time to do a group buy for all of us. I do have morals. I know in this business you have to let your morals go sometimes, but it's just not in me. You guys make it sound like Gruven invented the billet dipstick.

One of the reasons I'm on the fence too is I'm thinking of just making my own. I'd do a shape similar to a gear shift knob with a stripe down each side made of dimples to reference our steering wheels and a recessed //M logo on the top. I'd attach a stainless steel rod and a measuring area roughly as long as OEM on the other end.

I'm not saying they are the only ones who have the right to do this. Of course anyone can make one. But in essence, given the work put in to set this up and then for someone in our mafia family to take that customer list for their own purposes wouldn't sit well with me. I did say it's a free market and it's up to whoever to do what they want. I would not want to step in the way of a quality cheaper dipstick for the E46 marketplace. But if it's "nothing new", why hasn't it been done before?

Ray, I appreciate your gesture. Given the price, who knows if it will be manufactured as they may (or may not) get their 20. Thanks for holding off, your guy still might end up being the better route, so keep in touch with him please.

I'm at a loss. There's a lot of well deserved loyalty in the Mafia towards companies like Coby and BrakeYourSelf. Both companies put out a good product, are active on the site, and show that they value being apart of the Mafia via affiliate commissions and discounts for us.

Contrast that with Gruven. These guys have been selling a billet dipstick for the M3 for $39.99 and various other cars at similar prices. At some point, whether it was before or after Rando contacted them doesn't really matter, they made the decision that there wasn't enough demand to sell one for non M e46's. John collected close to 30 names to show them that there is demand for them and they come back with a price $15 higher? Why are we acting like they are doing us a favor? If they don't see the value in selling close to 30 of these to members of the Mafia who will undoubtedly post reviews for them, and thus opening the door for more sales, then I say we use the list to shop other fabricators and see what designs / prices they come up with.

I don't know that there is a rush here, so why don't we see what they come up with as far as price, and if they get to the minimum order? If not, easy decision.

Update: they dropped the price to $49.99 after I told them it was too high. That's not going to get it done meeting the minimum quantity. Whoever wants to take a shot at this, feel free. I appreciate your flexibility.

Too bad. Hopefully this will open the door to another opportunity elsewhere.

I'll see, but last I checked it was 5. Pretty sure the price has chased people away. They hadn't responded back yet but they will refund payment when the pre-buy is closed. I'll find out what they want to do.

I just game my fabricator an original dipstick today. (yeah I know its 5:40am) That's how I roll. He said he will give me a price by today or tomorrow on initial cost to get the billet made. From there I have to fabricate the rest.

We will see where this goes.

The pre-buy is up and at the page below:

http://www.gruvenparts.com/bmw-e39-e46-and-z4-billet-dipsticks/

The way it works is once they get 20 committed/paid, they produce. If you sign up and pay, but they don't get 20, they refund your money.

We have enough, so if you are still interested, please order. Frankly, the price is steeper than I hoped at $54.99.

Looks like this is dead in the water- I got an email from the company that said they only have 5 pre-orders.

How did they only end up with 5? This stinks.

because I backed out at the price - I will be content with the red ring instead an aluminum ring

Fair enough, it was a bit up there.
