Potentially interested in the sway bar. What size? Also curious, how many miles on it? Finally, I don't see any mounting pieces, but I'm not sure if it's needed. Would I need to buy any mounting pieces, etc.?

+1 on rando's inquiries

Sorry. Rando sent me a PM so everything got answered there. The size is 30.2mm. Mileage on my car is 5k miles, but I bought it used so mileage is unknown. The bar has 3 levels. I used the middle level which (according to the website) is 51% stiffer than the front. The front has no "needed" hardware, but I have bolts that I got with the bar and will send them with the bar to whoever decides to purchase.

Also, consider this a bump for the sway bar. Let's get it moved! Someone will love this as much as I did!

Lol. Definitely considering it. I'll just put it out there for comments. What's holding me back is that I've read that front sway bar only induces understeer, and I wouldn't want that for how I drive. Comments?

I believe it's the opposite on the E46 with the way the suspension is set up. I have read that some people don't even run a rear bar if their springs are stiff enough.

Definitely many people say no need to run a rear bar on these cars.

Avetiso
08-20-2014, 10:49 AM
That's interesting. I certainly thought the rear could use some stiffening up (on stock suspension at least, I have no experience with stiffer stuff).

slater

the rear bar endlink mounting points are not very far outward on the control arm, which is interesting for sure.... but i can't see how removing a rear bar would eliminate understeer.

a bigger front bar should reduce front end roll, but also create more understeer. a bigger rear bar would reduce rear roll, and create more oversteer.

ideally, you want to tune your suspension with spring rate rather than swaybars, as they limit suspension travel the stiffer they get. but, there is a balance there - you can't run 1000# springs on a street car, so sway bars (or, anti-sway bars as they are really known as) can help reduce body roll while running sane spring rates.

i'm actually quite impressed with the stock handling of these cars, even with my 110k-mile suspension. i am going to upgrade more bushings (i have poly FCABs at the moment, the rest is original) and then perhaps change my dampers, and leave it that. poly swaybar mount bushings would help a lot.

Right, so they why is there so much talk about only needed a front sway bar and not the rear. BTW, since the sale is pending, I feel OK filling up Matt's for sale thread with this discussion.

It really is a lot of fun! And with a stage one tune, and a little bit of suspension it will be a ton on fun! 170/330 would be the numbers after the tune... :-)
