View Full Version : rear rotor stuck on hub

Hey all, I am in the middle of changing my brakes, and the rear rotors are stuck to the hub. I've sprayed with penetrant, I've whacked the hub area with a deadblow, I've even given the braking surface moderate whack with the deadblow, all to no avail.

I tried to press the rotor off using longer bolts through the caliper bracket, but it doesn't line up with the hub, rather it just pushes on the tin backing plate.

Any ideas????

Tap with a hammer right onto the face of the rotor.. the vibration will eventually make it detach. Unless, the rotor is loose but the handbrake pad is catching a lip that forms out of rust over the years.

Yes, lower your e-brake handle, put one lug nut back in about 1/3 rd of the way, and wail away with a heavy hammer as it will eventually pop. That one ug bolt prevents it from falling on your toes.

The reason it's so tight is from all the build up in the e brake drums. Getting the rear rotors off sucked!!!

If I remember rite, there are two 8 mm tapped holes in the roter face. Use 2 8 mm bolts to push the rotor off the hub.

I vaguely remember this too but I'm not sure if it was for a japanese car not bmw..

Heaaaaaaaaaaat that thing up. The only way I could get off my sister's rear rotors on her 328i was heat. That thing was on there tight.

Did you get it off Ayan?

Hey all,

It was a journey but I managed to get them off. The ebrake was fully retracted, the issue was the tiny but strong rust bond between the inner edge of the rotors and the hub. Usually worst case scenario I give the rotor hat a few swings of the deadblow and they come off, but these were beasts.

The first one - we tried the deadblow, then heat, and then finally got it off with a 3lb sledge. 4 hours spent, but then 3 whacks with the sledge and it was loose. All of the others took a few whacks with the sledge, but they all came off ok.

Apparently this is a tool that I need to add to my collection - I've never had to resort to hitting anything in my cars that hard, but for the brakes this was a wonder tool.

We finished the job at 10pm last night, and we were too exhausted to do the fluid flush or to go and bed the brakes. I'll probably do the bedding today, but will likely have to do the flush in a few weeks.

Glad you got it done (and now you have an excuse to buy a new tool!).

There's something about whacking my car with a sledgehammer that I don't like. But I guess there are times that just call for a BFH.

BTW, there are no threaded holes in the brake discs on my car. That would have made life easier! But then again, I wonder how much pressure it would take to do this, with the hammer it's the vibration that broke the rust bond.

Has anyone used an air hammer with a blunt end to vibrate the rotor hat and break the rust bond? You would think that that would work great...

You do have the retaining bolt removed?

Oh, sh!t, we forgot about that!:facepalm

No, we did take that out right from the beginning. It was just the rust bond along the hub flange.

Glad to see it was sorted out. I had to use the same tool on my tie rods :shifty

Thanks Alex, I know you advised to use a BFH very early, but I figured I was already doing so with the deadblow...

Glad that you got them free. Hopefully you were able to use some anti-seize compound on that edge so that the next time you go to remove them they will come apart more easily.

Hey Brett, that's what I did!

I had this issue trying to change my rotors and pads a few months back. The damn retaining bolts were rusted on. I tried drilling straight through the thing but dont think the bit was large enough. And ideas on a better way to drill them off?

Glad that worked out. Phew!
