Holy shit you were out working on you car in that shit last night? That must of been painful. Our garage is always open for you bud :)
I quit at about 4:30. It was freezing rain and about 40 when I went in. Should have had pants on but oh well. Just an excuse to cozy with Rufus and watch some football.

Just dropped the car off at Porsche of Towson. They're gonna handle it from here. Hate tossing them the keys...but thats what's gonna get the job done while I can just focus on classes and work.

I brought most up to date. But the timing belt still needed to be done. I still got a good amount.
It's so sweat really. Twas extremely fun to drive while I had it!

Good call on the focus areas. Curious as to why you didn't go with an Indy shop?

The dealer is right next to work. And its close to my mothers job. I would have gone to an indy, but this dealership still has techs that work on this chassis. Im comfortable with the choice. I shouldnt have to frequent them more than a few times a year.

I'm curious but what exactly was the reaction you got when you went to the dealer? Were they cool or snooty? Also what does a hour of labor cost at the P shop?

Receptionist is nice and welcoming. My service advisor is understanding and quick with a quote. Nice dealership and likes the PCA activities.

Paid for the work today. Not about that $145/hour labor rate though...but they were nice enough to only charge one hour, and I feel that my money was well spent as it took the tech a little more than an hour. So instead of messing with the assembly for 6-7 hours, they did it for me. I don't plan on frequenting them very often, but they won't turn an out of warranty car away, because that's what keeps them in business :)

Picking the car up tomorrow morning before my shift. I imagine this rain is doing wonders for my interior...small leaks on both the hatch glass seal and the sunroof seal.

Ughhhh.

Picked the car up this morning and wouldn't ya know it, the nut is missing, and the stud isn't set fully in the head. Called the dealer and left a message. This process is becoming a real pain in the fucking ass! It's too cold to be dealing with this shit.

I mean...the stud is in place but there is no nut and the stud has loosened some. Thy did the work...but there must be some tightening technique that the tech is forgetting. So I'm assuming that this stud needs to be Loctite'd into place then the nut needs some torque value on it. My replacement studs came yesterday...but I didnt think I'd need them so quickly.

Hornung418
11-18-2014, 07:31 AM
So the stud is bottomed out and a nut was replaced. The leak is gone for now but I need to torque it after my drive home from work.

Why would you need to torque it? For $145 an hour they better do that sheeeeeet.

my thoughts as well.
Because I just took the car to work and the nut has to heat cycle. My issue that I'm fearing the most is that the last bolt may have sheared off in the head, but it's bottomed out now and the nut is on it. I will check all bolts when I get home, and hopefully the leak will be gone. I also think the engine might be a bit retarded so when the belt is retensioned after it's 1,200 mile service I will double check the timing.

Hornung418

Yes I will be calling them...but I will need to make sure I don't lose the stud in the process of getting to work.

They said the stud was bottomed out...but I have a hard time believing that. The place I bought the studs from was kind enough to send me two sets just in case...it happens that I need them lol.

Hornung418
12-01-2014, 03:21 PM
Got the car back!! Dealer bill totaled $770.32. But the work is certified and it drove fantastically!

It failed MD State Inspection however.

$1700 for a dealer installed windshield. Mine has a crack and a few chips. Fail. Going to call insurance and see what we can do for this.

$475 for new front tires. Cupping on the inside shoulders. Bought new wheels for $450 and Blizzak WS80 tires in 205/50/17 front, 225/45/17 rear. Will be mounted and balanced on Wednesday. Just in time for the snow.

$500+ for new fog lights. Cracks with holes and pitted glass. In rough shape from the get go. Using this opportunity to upgrade to the Euro Spec fogs with driving lights towards the center if the car. $400 local pick up. Guy I bought my wheels from has a new set.

And lastly needs a battery tiedown... $75 dealer cost. Will fab up something of my own for that. Not paying that much for a piece of metal.

Nah gonna do it right. My issue is with the price. The part is a bolt down u shape that tightens over the center of the battery. Easy to make or find used.

It's a quote that a manager recently used at a meeting we had. I felt it was very powerful. Just keep it in mind. It's my TT sig. Is it really that hard to read out of context material on the web? On the Tapatalks, it is in small, greyed out text below the body.

Firestone called me and said everything was ready to go. Asked for the bill and he told me it was $962.72...heart jumped out of my chest for a second. He didn't know the tires came from The Tire Rack...so after explaining that to him the bill is seventy-something dollars plus the cost for an alignment.

There is a special tool to remove the caps. They have two holes in them and you need to hook the tool into both and pull straight out to remove. It's too complicated for the hassle on winter rims.

Car is at my Indy shop getting the belts and tensioners adjusted. They are resetting the timing. And we should have a smooth runing car once again. The car was gutless off of boost and wouldn't accelerate like it was before all the heinous repair work came into play. Hoping this is enough to last me the winter. Well all the videos I took keep crashing the app...so until I figure out how to upload to youtube and then link to here, just know that this far feels better than the day I bought it. The car isn't shaking my teeth out and the car stays at the correct temperature. Before I would need to blip the throttle to get the WP spinning enough to bring the coolant temp down. Turbo noises are endless fun and the spark cut rev limiter is really fun when you're in the left lane next to a jersey wall. I will definitely have go pro videos after the holidays ;-)

Yeah it was a friend from DC who linked my buddy Tyler to the ad. We called and were able to go and meet the landlord on Monday and Tuesday I dropped off a check for $600.

It's a great space. Once we get more lights in there it will be a fantastic spot to store my junk and hang out with the gang. Of course it will be available for friends to use and do maintenance. We both can't wait to get moved in and settled.

Loving those wheels.

Went to the garage space this morning to meet a guy for an estimate to fix the space. Quoted us $3000 labor and materials. Should be done in a week. Took $500 off the price if we let him do oil changes and regular maintenance on his car using the lift.

Just need to approach the landlady and ease her into doing the repairs.

Need to get the water running. Replace one of the three garage doors. Luckily it's the cheapest. Get some heat in there. Add/Replace some portions of insulation. A host of things, but very reasonably priced.

Windshield is done. Gonna pick it up tomorrow. Hanging out in Towson to watch the Ravens crush the Steelers at a new bar.

Also funny note about the car. The leak in the sunroof has accumulated in the back seat footwell. I went out this morning and the floor was frozen!! Lol so I need to have that addressed. The windshield was also frosted over...from the indside!! That's not supposed to happen.

It rained really hard last night...my thoughts this morning were not of the good kind :-(

New glass is Sekurit! OEM with out the Porsche stamp. Super impressed with the quality.

The fact that Porsche wanted $1700 for just the glass is a fucking joke. The total cost for an oem windshield installed from Safelite was less than a third of the price of just the glass.

Gotta tackle that leak now. It's really cold here...still raining.

Today was fantastic! The most fun driving a car in the snow. I plowed the roads at 6:30 this morning as I went to work. Confidence was through the roof. The WS80s performed flawlessly. They never slipped or lost traction once and held the road nicely. I passed a car on the while they were struggling with the hill leaving my neighborhood. That was a pretty strong indication.

I just get really frustrated when you have to deal with other drivers who are ill-equipped for nasty weather. A two car accident had me backed up for a mile on back roads. An eagle eyed Subaru WRX STI got tangled up with a last gen Toyota Celica GT-S. Gave the Subaru owner a little rev-matched down shift as I passed by and smiled ;-) Got him 'mirin, bruh.

Anyway. Hope everyone is having a good snow day!!

Believe me...my first car was an '84. Had to wait 7 years to get back into one. And this one is amazing.

Getting the emissions done today. Then an inspection tomorrow. Then I can put the test pipe on and delete the catalyst. Can't wait for WOT redline shifts. Need to get video of the spark-cut rev limiter.

I know how you feel... I drove my ZHP on the previous owner's tags (which were no longer valid) for 2-3 months because the Massachusetts RMV is incompetent and doesn't know how to send a title. They managed to lose it so I had to go through the process of requesting a duplicate. :facepalm

Thanks guys!!!

Also while I was at it. I wanted to find out why my rear floor was frozen solid...

I took the rear headliner panel out to find that my sunroof drains are still connected. I notice an access port to the hatch hinges, it looks like there is space for an extra bolt. So I take my screwdriver and slot it up through the hole and it goes about two centimeters before it bottoms out. I contorted myself (I'm in the back seat mind you) so I could gaze out the hole and there is daylight.

My rain water was leaking into the cabin by way of two missing cap screws. A trip to the hardware store and two dollars later, I have hopefully fixed my leak. I don't have a hose handy to test it, and frankly I don't feel like finding out. Hoping this is the last of my winter woes.

Stay warm guys, my feet are freezing through my wigwam socks!!

Yep. Axle rebuild is budgeted at 8 hours for all four joints. Experienced techs can do it in 4. Hopefully we have the garage by this weekend would love to actually get something done with paying for labor.

Brett just did this job on his father's boxter, which is a fairly common failure point at 100k.

Hornung418
01-27-2015, 07:01 PM
So my axles have been quiet lately. I attribute the noise to the cold. In other news my oil level has been consistant, but the moisture in the crankcase has been freezing making cold starts show the level as low. Come up to temp and turn it off and back on, the light goes away.

And I firmed up my Saikou Michi Catch Can order. $126 shipped for the best catch can on the market. I went with the S3-OOC. It's made right here in the USA and comes in multiple shapes and sizes.

http://www.saikoumichi.com/

Chech them out for all your catch can needs! The lead time for the product is at 8 weeks. So this will give me time to get the garage in order and prep for my Air Oil Separator reseal and new hose install. Since the Manifold will be coming off I will clean the ICV and rebuild the throttle body.

Love it when a plan comes together. The reviews on the Saikou Michi product come highly recommended and from all the awesome customer service I received, I can sing nothing but praise right now.

Happy motoring!

Pictures inbound when I get to a computer. Got new axles and had my oil consumption looked into at a trusted shop near work. $728.67 later I learned I need an engine rebuild which runs about $10k if they do it. Great news.

So looking into alternatives will be the focus for the next couple months.

As far as options go, I'm going to start by getting a daily driver with a warranty...then tear the engine down and send the block off to be over-bored from 100mm to 100.50mm and Nikasil plated. when I receive the block back it will be completely sealed using new hardware and fasteners. I'm dreading this but the car runs and gets me to work for now. I can handle the hard parts now that I have a lift.

I just sourced an engine for $250. Gonna pick that up on March 1. It's an N/A engine but the block is the same. Only difference is compression ratio. So this will be stripped bare and built to turbo spec...so my dream of building an engine came a little earlier than I anticipated...but this will be a fun learning experience.

Until next time.

Thanks guys. The car drives and runs fine for the time being. The busted CV joints were giving me a headache. The chatter and the vibration made the transmission and in-turn the shifter shake and rattle. Now that I have silky smooth grease and new joints the ride is supple again. The engine options are limited to stock options for the moment. If the new block is crap, I will have it wet sleeved. Looks like that can be done for around $3000 all said and done. Then putting the stuff back together will probably be another $3000.

Details for when I actually cross that bridge really. My wallet is screaming right now.

Exhaust overrun vids will happen soon.

I found a seller who is gonna part out a locked engine. Bearing spun on no.2 is my guess. Hoping he parts with it for a couple bucks under $300. Should have everything I need for an engine rebuild in a spread sheet soon and will be chipping away at it a couple bucks at a time.

I will have Jeff go over it with a fine-toothed comb. If the bores are scored or the rings aren't gapped correctly I will pass over it. If the oil consumption is high...pass. I have a bitchin head installed on an engine that burns oil so we will make sure that I can profit on that and use it with the new engine.

Looks rough. But an entire shell for five hundo is a great deal.
Sell that rear hatch for $200 and the wheels. Then almost free engine.

Good luck!

Thanks Patrick. I just need a trailer to get her home if it checks out.

The body is a lot of surface rust. Doesn't look like it was in any accidents. My guess is since the paint was stripped off, the galvanized coating was removed in some places inducing the cancer to metastasize. Shame really, but there are lots of parts I can use.

The hatch glass can be removed from the frame I want to make a lexan window with this one.

They are 15s...so they cant be my new winters...but will make some easy money as they are in good shape. Easy to repair.

The car overall is in great shape. It has been in dry storage with a lot of stuff removed. The engine has some mold on it...but there was oil in the crankcase. Looks like it would make a great shell for a racecar build.

So the parts car is home now. It was quite the ordeal.

The car needed to be turned 90 degrees, and there was no key, steering wheel or battery. The wheels were locked pointed slighty off to the left...so we drug it through the mud with towstraps and prayed. Took three big guys 2 hours to get the fucking thing loaded up. But finally, we had it tied down.

http://tapatalk.imageshack.com/v2/15/03/15/b5fa0fc68a31281ca534d16ecdd63126.jpg

Made it 50 miles home from Wilmington, DE. But it took us another 30 minutes just to off load the car and move it out of the way. We discovered a technique to change directions by bouncing the front end and pushing it the direction we wish to face.

So because there are no windows or doors, the wind was forced out of the roof insert...which was consequently missing when we got home. I hope no one was hurt when it flew off. We had no idea it flew off.

My arms and back are killing me. Much more labor than I anticipated. More updates on Wednesday.

Not mine...brother of a guy I work with. It needs a new oil pan and I suggested an external transmission oil cooler. My drinking buddy had a Bronco that was bought new as his father's work truck that was smashed into while parked by a drunk driver. It was sad.

I pulled a big ass boat and plowed with it for years. Original C6 trans and second motor in it... until about 6" of the cam broke off and came out of the back of the motor and grenade the transmission at 211k. I was very sad too

Snuck off to the garage with my Dremel and cut a slot in the top of the bolts securing the ignition to the column. Then I used a flat head screw driver to turn them out.

http://tapatalk.imageshack.com/v2/15/03/18/029b9ae58aa9730c01294fc5f8bd535b.jpg

I ended up cutting the remains of the dashboard out for removal purposes. The PO had cut rectangles off the top for something...left me with small cuts to remove the whole thing.

So I changed my spark plugs today. I've been getting a high RPM misfire. Like 5k+ so I couldn't wind it out like I want to. The engine is blown so what's the worst that can happen to it? It's already condemned to it's fate.

Stock plugs were Bosch WR6DC+, so I went with a colder plug and narrowed the spark plug gap to 0.026". The gaps on the old plugs were around 0.032". Plugs #1 and #2 were covered in oil. Plugs #3 and #4 were white with some scale build up. Must have been where I was misfiring.

Started her up and she was blowing smoke for a little bit, but when she warms up the thicker weight oil fills the gaps. Can't wait to start prepping the parts car for engine removal.

Dude. It's so awesome. It was a former Spec Miata now owned by one of the guys on the team. It's got a worked over 13B with a turbo. The front of the engine sits over the front axle. Its a front mid-mounted engine. The owner is using our space to get the car wired together and then go sliding with it. It's hilarious.

MT-90 is for transaxles. The 75w90 is specifically for differentials. The slipperiness of the fluid can cause extreme synchro wear.
