Nice job, Vas.

Curious to hear how you like that shifter bushing. I installed the Garagistic one about 6 months after a complete shifter rebuild/DSSR installation and it made a huge difference.

Maiden voyage complete. Observations below.

Car fired right up. No weird noises between the old starter and new flywheel upon start up.

The clutch engagement point and pedal feel has changed. Before the clutch was right at the top and the feel was inconsistent. Now the engagement point is in the middle and easy to feel the exact point. The pedal feel is very OE aka on the softer side however that is not a bad thing. This clutch would be easy to deal with on a day to day basis especially in stop and go traffic.

The shifter feel is nice and crisp. Very enjoyable to row through the gears now.

As far as the single mass flywheel, I like it. Maybe it is just me but it does seem like the revs drop a tad quicker then before between gear changes.

Now the kicker as far as the chatter. I can't hear anything more audible then before with the dual mass. This is even with the a/c on or off and windows down. And before hand there was slight noise in neutral which sounded like something was loose and about to come apart in the gearbox.

I did drain the d4 atf redline fluid and pour in 1 quart of redline d4 atf and 1 quart of redline 75w140ns gear oil.

Now it's time to break it in gently. I will report back.

I'm really happy the single mass worked out for you Vas, amazing work doing that job solo. I completely feel your pain having to keep the car under 3000rpms and know exactly how bad that sucks. I had to drive slow for a week to get my emission ready sensors complete in the 135i when I got the stock cats on it.

Last Monday packed the bags and left for vacation.

Drove to Wilmington, North Carolina ( Roughly 400 miles ) and spent a couple of days there. Then left mid-week and drove to Cape Charles, Virginia ( Roughly 300 miles ) and then after a couple days there back to Virginia ( Roughly 250 ) miles. While at these destinations, put roughly another 250 miles driving the car. In the end put on about 1200 miles on the car and rolled over 177k.

Took my toolbox and extra engine oil/coolant. Car has not been using any extra oil after the ccv rebuild with the O2 pilot mod. Still on the original radiator but no leaks to report. Overall a successful road trip.

Things to note though:

1) Slight steering wheel shimmy which I believe is the tires needed to be balanced ( have not done it since they were mounted ). They have been wearing evenly but the rear tires are getting close to the wear bars. Mileage on the set is roughly 19,000
2) Clutch/Flywheel/shifter rebuild - no issues to report and everything is working as is. However I finally heard the famous gear chatter from the transmission. After a couple hours of driving and the transmission getting hot, the noise sounds like there is straight cut gears inside of the transmission. Sitting at idle in neutral with the a/c is when the noise is most audible. However my hunch is the type of oil that is inside the trans ( d4 atf mixture ) which I think is personally to thin of an oil when heated up inside a manual transmission. Plus I am not a big supporter of using ATF inside a manual vehicle.

So I will be doing a drain and refill and going with Redline MT90 which has a higher viscosity grade.

Otherwise no complaints or regrets going to a single mass flywheel and a spring clutch disk. Pedal feel is great, easy to manage and consistent.

Will report back when I will swap trans fluid.

Vas, for what it's worth I run D4 ATF in the 135i. I originally swapped in Redline MTL, but I had issues with cold starts. Every time from a cold start when I would shift into second gear, I could hear a very brief grinding noise and it didn't feel good. I quickly switched to Redline D4 ATF and the problem has completely vanished.

I ran Redline MTL in the ZHP which is a heavier almost diff heavy fluid and never had any weird problems in the ZHP. I think your right to switch to that fluid in the ZHP.

With the newer BMW's they use a much thinner fluid. The stock fluid in the 135i is actually D6 which I thought would be too thin.

This. MTL causes me to have issues engaging 2nd gear in the wintertime, and overall the notchiness is increased when using the MTL. The D4-ATF has an absolutely perfect feel in my gearbox.

Redline does recommend D4 ATF and the reason alot of people like it is due to its viscosity 70w80 ( equivalent to motor oil that is 0w20 ) which makes gear engagements easy. And for auto/step cars this fluid is great due to the flow that is needed inside the transmission and the torque converter.

However Redline does offer 2 different fluids for manual cars.

Redline MTL (viscosity 75w80 - equivalent to motor oil that is 5w30) and Redline MT90 (viscosity 75w90 - equivalent to motor oil that is 15w40) and I think the thicker oil at 100 degree Celsius is the trick to getting the noise down when the transmission is hot. And according to Redline the MT90 does eliminate notchy shifting even when cold.

I was actually looking into the factory bmw fluid as well. It is a GL4 fluid that is a 75w90 viscosity ( identical to the Redline MT90 )

Only thing is that the cost is $35 per bottle vs the Redline which is $17 per bottle.

So thickness level - OE Bmw Fluid/ Redline MT90 > Redline MTL > Redline D4 ATF

Vas, when I first bought the ZHP I flushed the OE fluid with new Penosin fluid which was what BMW recommended and apparently used as the OE fluid for my transmission.

A few years later when I switched to Redline MTL I honeslty didn't notice a difference. It was hard to tell if the Redline was better because of the fluid itself or if it was just clean fluid. The Penosin fluid was 75w-80 according to my records.

Vas I sent an email to Redline about fluids. I explained I’m using D4 and asked about higher viscosity fluids to help with gear noise. I specifically mentioned how UUC recommends a blend of 1 quart 75W140NS and top off with D4 to help with chatter with UUC lightweight clutch/flywheels, asked if it was a safe combination, and to see what recommendations they may have as an alternate to D4ATF. This was the response I received...

Are you still using the BMW trans fluid? If you are how is your experience with it especially since you lived in NJ.

I ran pure D4 ATF and right after the new clutch, I drained it and did the mixture that Redline mentions above. 1 Bottle of Redline D4 ATF and 1 Bottle of Redline 75w140NS. And I still think the viscosity is too thin.

Curious to what they would say if you mention to them that the BMW Genuine GL4 fluid is a 75w90 viscosity ( Same as the MT-90 )

No issues that I remember with the BMW trans fluid either in NJ or here in SC. My first change was at 80K. I was starting to get a little gear whine. After the change it went away. I changed again at IDK... 130k? I guess I'm lucky that my wife, since moving from Ohio, has always worked for BMW or a dealer group that included BMW

2005 ZHP:

Year Start: 167,459

Year End: 179,702

Total Miles Driven in 2018: 12,243

Starting off the year with a new Autocraft Platinum AGM battery. Out the door cost was $153.99. Old battery was still starting the car fine but it was a 04/12 production date. Proactive replacement but did not want to get stranded if it did fail.

Car is also back on it's winter wheel setup. Spring will require a new full set of tires.

Happy 2019 everyone

Next up was a cooling system refresh. Last one was roughly 50k ago but did not include a radiator. And the original unit at 188,000 miles developed a leak.

And then it snowballed from there. The while in there concept hit me hard. Full cooling system overhaul including the hard coolant lines and heater hoses, starter, sensors and everything else that can't be replaced with the manifold on the car.

So now I'm waiting on parts and putting it back together.

Happy Sunday

Wow that's a lot!

How do you like a fresh DMF and clutch compared to the SMF? I know the rattle is hell, but people like the feel. I've always wondered how much it was that they liked the feel of a fresh clutch/flywheel over a worn one, not necessarily the SMF.

Also the OE rubber rear shifter bushing compared to the poly? A lot of the guys on m3forum love it, but 1 or 2 actually had the welds break from the extra vibration transmitted.

Refined. I hated the rattle and the feel was light to me. Even the wife mentioned several times that something was not right.

As far as the poly rear shifter bushing, there was an improvement in the feel but it made an awful noise when shifting through the gears. Upon removal, there was a fair amount of grease on it but I just could not live with the noises from the SMF and poly.

Live and learn when it comes to this but at what cost if someone is paying a shop parts and labor to this work.

Feel free to ask if you have questions. The shifter can be done with the driveshaft in place but easier with it removed. Removing the exhaust is the worst part.

Nice. I am looking to see 200k on this car

Sent from my SM-G960U using TapatalkI'm hoping for 250k+ for it.

Put 350 miles on it this week and not a single leak. Coolant in the expansion tank is right on point as well.

Btw the dual mass flywheel and factory clutch is really nice. Smooth engagement and no annoying noises compared to the single mass.

Next up is sway bar links and overhaul for the parking brake setup.

Sent from my Pixel 2 XL using TapatalkLuckily just a small amount. Usually about half a quart of oil over the 7500 mile oil change interval.

Performed an oil change with a Liqui Moly 5w-30 kit from fcpeuro. Also replaced the front sway bar links (lemforder) since the boots were torn. Didn't get the time to replace the rear links or rebuild the parking brake system. That's next week's project.

The car recently has developed 2 Lean codes for Bank 1 and Bank 2.

I hooked up the smoke tester and found 1 small leak from the vacuum plug on the backside of the intake manifold. Replaced that cap and reset the codes.

Ordered a new fuel filter for preventative maintenance. However my hunch is that the OE MAF sensor is on its way out since it is still original to the car.

Codes?P0171 and P0174. Bank 1 and bank 2 lean.

Decided to swap maf sensors between cars just to see what the short and long fuel trims look like and behold they went down with a good working maf sensor. Will drive it longer and see if the codes come back but my guess the original sensor is either dirty or decided to not read correctly at 190k.

What is acceptable % should be?

Sent from my SM-G960U using Tapatalk

The numbers should be no greater then 10% and the total fuel trim numbers should be no more then 10% when they are added. The fuel trims should be monitored at idle, 1500 rpm and 2500 rpm. The screenshot above was taken at 2500 rpm.

If the numbers are greater then 10% in the positive or negative direction, the DME is compensating for more then just normal wear and tear on the engine.

Also something to consider is that when the numbers reach 25% in either direction the check engine light will come on for either system too lean or rich.

Parking brake overhaul completed using the BMW value line kit. Kit included everything needed to refresh the system which is nice since there is various springs that make up the parking brake mechanism.

Adjusting the parking brake is necessary afterwards for proper operation.

The 200,000 mile mark is very close. Currently it's at 199,221 and the valve cover got replaced due to the typical leak. Went with the genuine bmw gasket and the 15 sealing rings/washers.

This is what the valve train looks like with 7500 mile change intervals using liqui moly 5w30 oil.

Happy motoring everyone

When doing the last oil change I noticed there was a slight leak from one of the power steering lines that connect to the reservoir. So I ordered a power steering kit from fcpeuro and installed it this week. Kit includes the reservoir and the 2 lines that go to it.

Pretty simple job and technically free due to the lifetime warranty from fcpeuro.

Replaced the hood and trunk support struts with Stabilus brand. Same as the genuine bmw made in Germany. These were fairly cheap from fcpeuro and easy diy.

Conti dws+ have been great. However I did end up puncturing the rear tire and it could not be patched due to the location. Tirerack did cover it under warranty so it was replaced with a new tire.

Liqui Moly 5w30 oil change kit from fcpeuro
NGK BKR6EQUP Spark Plugs
Mann air filter and cabin filter
Zimmerman brake rotors
EBC red stuff brake pads and wear sensors
Stoptech SS brake lines
Brake flush with ATE Type 200 brake fluid

Hoping to still do a coolant flush and drain/fill the transmission before old man winter arrives.

Starting the year off with 221,890 miles.

I also bought a new key from the dealer. I predict the battery in the original key finally decided it had enough since it would not lock or unlock the car.

The new key arrived already cut and programmed so all that had to be done was sync it to the vehicle. The dealer included the instructions as well so it was an easy process. $170 shipped out the door.

Vas,

You know you can replace the rechargeable battery in your key with a new one then you can save and use your key again. I did this with my M3's key.

I did this with my M3's key.I am aware of this diy option and might try it out on the old key. However the original key was just worn down and some of the buttons didn't click the same way as a new key. I will keep it as a spare since it still works in the ignition.
