View Full Version : E46 M3 L.I.P. Syndrome

So I am apparently experiencing Low Intake Pressure Syndrome on my car. The engine isn't producing as much power as it can because there isn't enough airflow going through the manifold.
Anyone ever hear of this? Shop here in Indy is trying to take care of it, should have some more info in the afternoon. :fingerscrossed

Sorry to hear that...
That actually came up when I was researching 4Runners... I think Toyota might have come out with a solution for 3rd gens, but it was pretty rare. I don't know about M3s, but I don't think I've never known anyone who experienced it in a ZHP. Hope they figure something out for ya... :dunno

Hmm. What state is the air filter in? Perhaps cleaning/replacing?
Also, is the plate on any of the throttle bodies sticking or not moving properly?
Vacuum leak in the intake system or perhaps one or more bad throttle body gaskets?
I'm trying to think of this logically...

Seth, I've never heard of or seen Low Intake Pressure Syndrome for our M3's. Interested in finding out what occurred to your ///M.... sorry I don't have any inputs to this issue as I have never experienced this on my ///M....

Ok well the tech figured out the issue with the low intake pressure.
Apparently it wasn't enough airflow to properly go HAM so after some new weird looking parts were installed the car is good to go now they say.

Driving her home right now so nothing yet. The description says 480+ at the crank, but that doesn't account for catless headers.
Some numbers I do have right now are I don't whopping 37 miles to the gallon doing 80 miles an hour over the last 52 miles. I have half a tank of gas left in my range since it's 250 miles till empty. http://tapatalk.imageshack.com/v2/15/03/17/8573ce12081d1d926a8feff480bea938.jpg

When you change injectors, the computer doesn't calculate MPG properly, so whatever is in the picture is totally false.
My E30 did the same thing when I put in the S50... it thought I was really doing about 40mpg when in reality I was doing between 25-30. lol

To be fair in theory increasing HP should also increase fuel economy.
Lol yeah they were mush driving down Monday though

I am very close to saying this is impossible, but I'd like to ask for examples of this being true before I make an idiot of myself...
This is totally the inverse of what is logical lol

It's true if you're increasing HP by increasing efficiency - extracting more energy out of the gas. Gaining HP simply by forcing more air and fuel into the engine isn't going to help your mpg

This. Adding HP is always done by using this method.
Creating more efficient engines; that's what manufacturers have done over the last who-knows-how-many years. Cars of today get better mileage with more horsepower than cars of 30 years ago. :thumbsup
wsmeyer
03-18-2015, 07:38 AM
Yeah but they didn't do it simply by forcing more air and fuel in.
HP has gone up
MPG has gone up
Displacement has gone down
Emissions have gone down
The only way to achieve all of that is to increase the amount of energy extracted from the fuel.

this is what I was getting at BP. But yeah you are right, doing it by more fuel and air isn't going to raise it that much. However there should be a bump over stock because other components are upgraded, engine cooling is higher and other systems are made to work more fluidly. This is the same principle we use at EC to tune cars. Bump in power but also see bump in MPGs (if even only 2-3 max).
Rovert
03-18-2015, 10:36 AM
When I had my ZHP tuned, the tuners leaned out the mixture to give more efficiency and power. But the tuner couldn't do too much since the cooling system isn't upgraded to handle increased engine temperature and engine components not made for increased pressure, to my knowledge. If we had massive and reliable cooling system we could all be injecting less fuel and more air for hotter fiery explosions! LOL

This is part of the magic tweaking EC does in tuning ;)
Granted it's with stock parts but some adjustments can help maximize the gains had and efficiency without going rich on fuel.
