View Full Version : Save the ZHP; buy another DD

So I love my ZHP and have put over 120k miles on it since buying it CPO. It has been extremely reliable and I've done the "usual" preventative maintenance items. As the miles have accumulated I started to think that I should get a "new" DD to save the ZHP (it currently has 152k miles). Naturally I've looked at used/CPO BMWs and am now totally in analysis paralysis.

I test drove a 2014 320i AT that was very nice, if not a bit large. I found a 2004 ZHP sedan with high miles but priced right. I'm looking at a high-mileage E46 Touring AT, with the caveat of AT. I found a new M235 with limited slip and performance exhaust that will be $$$, but awesome. I don't know what to do.

Should I just be prepared to spend money on my ZHP, or would it be better to find an inexpensive lease? For example, I can get a Fiat 500 for $120/month lease. It would serve my commuting needs (less than 15 miles a day). This would save the ZHP from DD. So many choices...

at 152K miles, you're past 'garage queen' status, so i'd just keep maintaining and enjoying it!

I took mine out of DD nearly 2 years ago and bought a truck. Since that time I've done a ton of PM on the ZHP and now it's back into DD again. Time to give the truck that I've put 30K on a rest.

I DD'd my ZHP for 2-ish years and 50-55k miles. If your car was sub 100k miles I would say definitely get a DD to keep your ZHP low miles but I agree that it's past garage queen status. Just keep taking good care of it. A good detail and keeping the interior clean can go a long ways with making a high mileage car looking good!

All - thanks for your feedback. Every time I get in to drive it i say "this is a great drive-best BMW I've owned." Hearing you say that it is past garage-queen status is so true and puts things in perspective. I owned two other BMWs that I took to well over 200k so know what that is like. I know someone who leased a Fiat and says he likes it as a short-commute car, which got me thinking that option. As was said, if my car had less than 100k on it, it's a different story. I was offered by the dealer to test drive the M235 so may just do that. Cheers.

I've thought about doing this as well and kept having to tell myself that a ZHP will never be worth "saving" in that regard. It's an excellent daily driver; why "save" a daily driver? It'll never be a collectible. I don't know if that'll make any sense to you, but in my case, I just decided to keep daily driving the ZHP 'till I get my dream car, an F80 M3. And, even then, I'll probably still alternate daily driving duties between the two, because the F80 isn't a collector car either and as such will never have any significant value by saving it, so I'm going to drive the heck out that one too. :)

The goal by then is to have at least 400k miles on the ZHP by the time the F80 comes into play! I'm over half way there already.

You enjoy your cars by driving them.... it's that simple. Enjoy them for what they are....glad to see you're planning to enjoy yours BP :thumbsup

I drive both of my BMWs.....that's because I enjoy them ;)

Everybody has their own opinion on whether to DD the ZHP or not. I prefer not, simply because I'm going to transform mine into a track monster. I've also always had 2 car options, it's what I'm used to doing.

He must either drive all highway or drive maybe a mile a day. If he daily drove that on a standard commute, he'd require a knee replacement every year...

I vote to buy another DD to have two cars. Although I enjoy driving my ZHP immensely, I don't want to waste its mileage doing commute stuck in traffic (I have my Prius for that =)

Nope! Standard commute. That is plain old road tar in the pic. Dude is older, too. I've seen it in the rain several times on my way to lunch.

Of course, our standard commute around here is not "stuck in traffic", but yes, there are several annoying strings of traffic lights and such.

Or I would love to see the driver's left calf muscle.

I figure he's pretty balanced. Left calf from that clutch, right calf from supporting a wallet in his pocket big enough to DD a Countach. I've seen him open the door and sit on the sill while letting the clutch out in reverse, several times, so it's probably pretty well conditioned.

:rofl

Not everyone is able to have the 2 car option Matt so they have to daily drive their ZHPs... just putting it out there...

Welp, I'm buying one with a ton of miles, and I plan to double it... NAY, triple it!

However! I also plan on it being a 9 month car, with the other 3 rocking the 4R what up.

Wow, lots of energy here. Part of my thinking is to have another car to "row the gears." It's not that I'm bored, but as a DD it's not possible to wring out the ZHP in my 15 minute commute. Well, I guess I could, but it would not be prudent. What I didn't mention is that on my to-do list is to refresh the still-original suspension, i.e., struts, shocks and springs. I've budgeted for the maintenance so having another vehicle gives me flexibility. I did arrange a test drive in the M235 with M Performance exhaust and LSD, so what effect might that have? Boys with their toys...

Kind of a waste of money, IMO... why have two of the same exact car? Might as well have one that's better than the other if you're gonna have two...

Then your gonna want to be saving the nicer one before you know it and your back to square one.
Get a ZHP vert and call it a day! Great addition to the family.
In the end everyone has to live with their own choices. If I had the money I would have a truck as well as the ZHP.

the only benefit of having 2 zhp is that they share parts for a daily driver emergency operation situation. But having two zhp would mean you could just drive the other..while the other is down..

IMO unless you doing heavy commuting, there is no real reason to cherish the mileage on a 152k ZHP.

I do a 100mile commute everyday and I prefer to keep my daily expenses down so I bought a prius. TBH, on the freeway going 70mph is boring in all cars and I can't say I would want my miles racking up on the zhp doing the freeway. I want them racked up on mountain roads and track days. :)

You need to bite your tongue.

In a similar boat... 233k miles on my '03 Ci. Looking at a car to take over DD duties. ZHP (sedan or coupe), M3, later E46 non-ZHP, etc...

What would be wrong if I got another coupe to go with my '03? :-)
