A couple of days ago I purchased an Imola red, 2004 330i 6MT ZHP. 138k on the clock, with all up-to-date maintenance with all the receipts. Apparently both of the 2 owners were responsible adults, and it shows, the car is extremely clean and runs like a top.

Great write up. And excellent pics! Car looks awesome. If you do get any front paint work done, make sure they pull the bottom grill and paint it black (or tape/newspaper around it and DIY), helps tremendously to improve the car overall!

I honestly was going to do it today after the coils/wheels, but decided I had enough grease on my hands for one day :) The next phase is to get a quote for repainting the hood and front bumper/lip & to get that front grill freshened up. Then she will be 100% clean and my chances of getting rear-ended will increase exponentially! :headbang

Minus the CSL spoiler, I really like the way the car's turning out! I do have to make a note though; you don't have the correct trunk lights. I'm not sure if you knew that; these are the coupe style ones. If it's on purpose, then never mind me. :)

I have heard a couple people say they don't like the spoiler! I haven't been bothered by it enough yet to do anything about it. We will see.

& I do know the tails are wrong :/ I bought it with the tails & spoiler. Haven't done any exterior body modifications yet. All in due time!

Springs are all settled, and I was able to run less camber up front without rubbing. My rear tires catch slightly on the bumper tabs in the middle of a hard corner, so I will probably be shaving those. Happy with the stance of the car overall :)

One of my CCFL's burned out the other day, so I think it's time for my headlight refresh. Going to replace the projectors with some retrofits, put in LED halo's, and new headlight lenses. Wish me luck :P

Thank you! I agree, I think anything lower than this would look silly. & I know they're a bit "too modified" of a look. When I decided on my setup, I copied another ZHP owner that I saw pics of over on E46Fanatics, and he went with Silver Arc-8's. Didn't want to copy too much :) I am sure I will grow tired of them someday and powdercoat them silver!

He did some matching side skirt extensions that looked really cool with it.

I actually love the look of the M-Tech fascia on the ZHP, so everything I look at that covers up the shape of the bumper won't work for me. I like the Hamann-style lip because it adds a little "race" look, but also lets the original form of the bumper show.

The Hamann lip looks way too straight, IMO. The front of the M-Tech II bumper curves, whereas the lip doesn't curve nearly as much. It feels to me like the lip and the bumper are clashing at each other for attention.

No snow tires this year. My budget for snow tires was wiped out a month ago when someone hit my front fender while the car was parked, and didn't leave any info. Needless to say, this is the first day that snow has actually stuck, it usually melts off. We have super mellow winters in Idaho, so I usually don't run snow tires anyways.

Tore apart my car yesterday and replaced my RTAB's & FCAB's with PowerFlex's. Cleaned some stuff and found that my oil vent hose thingy is leaking (barely). Lowered the front about 1cm and adjusted front preload, and then got an alignment.

Talk about a pain in the butt. Thanks Marcus for the RTAB tool! I'll send it back on Monday!

Probably one of the best upgrades I have done to the ZHP so far. These are a must if you plan to maximize the benefits of aftermarket suspension.

I have put about 4,000 miles on my BC's. Disappointed. Hope they come through with warranty support.

4K is terrible for an endlink to have already gone out. Hopefully they do something for you. I'm going to check mine when I get some time but I did previously plan on buying an adjustable pair. I just couldn't decide what to get.

That's what I thought. I daily drive my car, I don't race it, and I'm pretty gentle honestly. Our roads aren't too crappy in Boise, so I'm pretty surprised.

Been sooo busy with school, haven't had a lot of time to put in work on the car. Here's what I've done the past few weeks:


-Retrofitsource's FX-R Projectors, new headlight lenses, khoalty angel eyes, and new 4500k D2S bulbs

Wiring is super simple. The new bowls come with a different high-beam mechanism that requires the old high-beam plug be clipped, and the wires spliced into the new high-beam "flipper" circuit. The old plug is cut from the red and green wires. Then, each wire is spliced into the two wires coming off the new projector (doesn't matter which one goes to which, as this mechanism "flips" the shield up as soon as voltage is applied to the circuit.)

The light output from the projectors is mind-blowing. These will outshine pretty much any vehicle I've been next to on the road (some of those Lexus' and Acura's are quite similar however). I do not need to turn on my fogs at night anymore for visibility, in fact I can hardly tell they are on when the low-beams are on. The install was kind of a pain in the butt (there was cutting and some re-drilling as the holes didn't seem to fit quite right), but it was totally worth the work.

Removed CSL stick-on spoiler, added OEM painted trunk lip.

Using a heat gun and some string, I slowly worked the string underneath the spoiler and it peeled off.

There didn't seem to be any paint fade (thank goodness). I had to hand-polish the trunk to remove the dull hard-water buildup that the old spoiler had left over the years. Ended up looking like the rest of the car - I was relieved.

A few weeks ago I ordered an oem-style trunk lip spoiler (pre-painted). I didn't go the BavAuto route, probably should have. This is one of those $40 ones off eBay from Taiwan. We'll see how long the paint lasts. The color matches almost perfectly, so I'm not complaining about it.

I am not digging the way that my Apex's look in the Satin black. They are too "aftermarket" for what I was wanting to achieve. What do you think? Stay black or get them powdercoated to a satin silver finish?

Silver it is. I wanted to make sure I'm not crazy. But I think silver with BMW center caps will really set the car off. Time to switch back to the 135's for a couple weeks.

I quite like the way the satin black APEXs look on Imola. They don't look factory to me, but that isn't necessarily a bad thing.

I agree with Vas, black tends to hide lines (that's why black tends to make an uglier car look a little better, IMO).

Personally, if you're willing to have them painted, I would get them silver. I think silver looks great on an Imola ZHP sedan:

I cut the part of the fender liner that was being rubbed on with a dremel. Other people on E46F have been cutting them and don't have any issues.

Also unbolted the bracket and ground down the stud. I left the metal clips off, because they literally do nothing to hold the bumper in place with the quarter panel.

It rides awesome on full soft, very comfortable but still sporty. I'll probably leave it this way for awhile.

If anyone has some insight, I would love some help diagnosing this issue:

I've noticed a popping sound coming from the rear passenger corner of the car when starting slow acceleration, about 1-2 seconds from starting at a standstill. It's very intermittent.

I've taken the wheel off, ensured tightness of the lower shock bolt, no slack in the spring, and the sway bar doesn't appear to be making any noise.

I also pulled the shock off and moved the whole trailing arm up and down, and can't duplicate the noise.

These are fairly new coilovers (6-7 months) so I'm not assuming my upper shock mount is bad. Any suggestions?

I don't see any cracking or tears in the subframe (believe me, I looked for like an hour.)

EDIT: I guess I should add that I have power flex rear trailing arm bushings. Might not have been the best choice but they have less than 2k on them, I doubt they are the issue.

Finished my cooling system overhaul.

Installed new upper/lower hoses, expansion tank, temp sensor o-ring, thermostat, water pump, idler pulley, a/c tensioner, hydraulic tensioner, and new belts. All BMW parts except for the thermostat and the tensioner kit (the cheap one from ECS, we will see how she holds).

I had a stuck thermostat, the car wasn't getting to operating temp if the ambient temperatures were too low.

She's all buttoned up now, no leaks, warms up super fast, and no more intermittent belt squealing! This was one of the easiest jobs I've done to this car.

Yesterday, I got the Apex's back from the powder-coater's. I was too excited to wait, so I went to Discount Tire before work to have the summer tires mounted back on and mount the wheels back up. We discovered that the powder-coater guys didn't cover the hub rings, so the wheels wouldn't mount back up to the hubs. The guys at Discount Tire were super cool (the manager had a nice silver E39 M5 sitting in the parking lot, I think he understood me). I convinced them to sand down the inside of the hubs so that their time wasn't totally wasted mounting up all of those tires. They did, and the wheels fit back on just fine. I called the powder-coating company to let them know they screwed up. Oh well, I got some good recommendations of who to use in the future.

Also installed my OEM center caps, and installed my shorty center console.

Wheel specs are 18x9.5 +35mm square. -2.1 deg camber front and -1.5 deg rear. My rear bumper tabs are removed, and there is zero rubbing. I am on BC Racing type BR coilovers set to full soft.

Fixed my weird popping issue. It was getting worse and I was ready to take it to a shop and be informed that my subframe was sheared. No such case. Got the car put up on jack stands last night and inspected all the rear subframe mounting points.

I unbolted the passenger's side RCAB bushing carrier (marking its position first) and twisted the carrier back and forth.

It was making an awful creaking noise, of course. How? I have no idea. I expected trouble from the Powerflex rears considering everyone else's complaints with them. I reapplied copper anti-seize, tightened the carrier back up, and bolted it on. No more creaking/popping noises on acceleration from a dead stop.

Took a trip to the tint shop today to have all four and the rear's redone in 20% tint. The guy saw my old tint and told me it would cost an extra $200 to remove the old stuff. I told him I was good, and no thanks! Lol. I'm going to be redoing the front's myself so that I have an even darkness all around. I would guess that my rear's and back window are either 35% or 20%. Wish me luck!

Still haven't gotten on that window tint yet, but I did take a study break this morning and go pick up some Opti-Seal and a new microfiber rag from a detailing shop in town. This stuff is so easy to apply... you literally spray some on a rag (or the applicator pad) and wipe onto your clean car. The gloss is over-the-top! And it seems to wick water just as well as fresh wax. We will see how long it lasts.

Knocked out some maintenance today. The upper radiator hose I used in my overhaul was leaking big-time, so I had to swap it out. Before I started, I thought that it could've been the expansion tank (improper bleeding or something), so I ordered a replacement and did everything.

My thermostat was also faulty and throwing a low-voltage code.

Bled the system properly. I put about 100 miles on the car afterwards today and there are no leaks. Yay!

Also I got in and replaced the steering guibo that I bought about 4 months ago. Holy crap! The car feels so tight now.

One of my assistant managers at work generously donated his old Rockford 10" P2 to me. I picked up a decent Pioneer Premiere amp in a shady Craigslist deal for $40. Bought a wiring kit, and spent about 3-4 hours figuring out where to splice my input wires & installing the system. This little guy thumps pretty well! I didn't want anything too overkill, and I had to turn the amp down quite a bit honestly.

A nice compliment to the "crappy" HK system.

That's a good idea. I'll give that a shot.

Wiring the sub was fairly simple:

Placed power wire on the main positive battery terminal.

Placed the ground on the point behind the passenger side bolster (there's a huge clip with a bunch of other ground wires that bolt down to bare metal, perfect!). This was close enough to the amp - less than 6 inches away.

I tapped the signal wires (rear right +/-) right before they went into the HK amp on the driver's side in the trunk. The switch wire is in that bunch as well. Ran those three around the amp, under the carpet, and right out next to the amplifier. This is what the setup looks like now (could be much cleaner, I need a longer power wire for sure.)

I also put some industrial Velcro underneath the sub box. It stays in place very nicely, even with sharp corners.

I set out to do my VANOS seals yesterday... found out that the VANOS/cylinder head gasket DIDN'T come with my kit that I ordered. Whoops! Waiting on that gasket from the local BMW dealer.

Instead, I replaced my engine/transmission mounts. I went with Lemforder M3 engine mounts, and UUC black transmission mounts.

Along with more engine noise above 3k rpms, there is a little increased vibration at low RPMS around 1200-1500. However, the shifting response is excellent! The car snicks into gear every time - there is no more hesitation like something is catching in the shifter assembly during quick shifts.

Good plan. From what I've read, the vibration is being caused by the transmission mounts, not really the engine mounts. I ordered some M3 lemforder transmission mounts that I'm going to try instead of the UUC's. The 1500 rpm vibration isn't noticeable unless you're completely stopped.

The whole install is a pain in the butt if you don't remove your exhaust, but it's so worth it. I have had ZERO first gear lockout's while stopped, and 1st-2nd gearshifts are as smooth as butter now. All of these mods in combination with my CDV delete and clutch stop mods have totally transformed my ZHP! Such simple adjustments too!

Exactly. The only time this happened was when I first started it and revved to see what the difference was. It's totally not noticeable if you aren't hunting for it.

Exactly. The only time this happened was when I first started it and revved to see what the difference was. It's totally not noticeable if you aren't hunting for it.

I was rolling up my passenger window yesterday and heard the "snap of death", but thankfully the window still functioned and stayed up. I pulled apart my door panel and performed the zip-tie repair that's all over the Internet. She's good as new now!!

Alright, I'm finally set to go on the VANOS seal replacement. I don't have any rattling issues, so I went with the seals from Besian Systems & a new gasket from BMW. I'm planning on starting Tuesday.

Anybody want to impart any wisdom to me before I start the project?

Just do a good amount of reading and get familiar with the procedure. Rajaie is there to help you if you need it. I called him on a Sunday when I was doing mine and he called me right back while at Disneyland!

Thanks for the advice! I have read through the procedure 3 times now, trying to make sure I have all the tools, parts, etc. I'm going to do spark plugs and the valve cover gasket while I'm in there as well. Can't believe his level of customer service!

I had some serious issues getting the VANOS cap covers off (the big hex bolts in the very front), it was like the aluminum had been seized onto the unit. I had to go grab some new bolts off of a junker car, because these ones were trashed by the time I got them off.

From there on, it was pretty easy! Got everything pieced back together and she fired right up.

Now, it is idling a little bit rough because I'm getting a P0014 code, which I am told means my exhaust solenoid could be stuck, or the sensor is bad. I followed the process outlined on Beisan's website to a "T", so I'm talking with Rajaie today to see about either cracking it open again, or verifying that the piston or sensor is bad first. Keep your fingers crossed for me!

Removed both intake and exhaust solenoids, cleaned & lubed, reinstalled. All better. Now to see how she pulls! The seals were trashed, so I bet this will make a huge difference in low-end power.

Update:

After the VANOS seals repair, there has been improved engine response overall.

-Car actually starts with less cranks of the starter now (don't know why??)
-Huge powerband improvement, especially from 2100-3900rpm
-No more power dip at 4K
-About 20% power restoration (according to the butt dyno)

Pretty dang happy with the results.

Nice! Glad you were able to make the car feel more lively. I doubt 20% of the power was lost due to bad seals, but if it feels like 20%, that's all that really matters, right?

Exactly. I'm sure that it's not an actual 20% increase, but the motor just runs better overall.

I also had an interesting rough idle issue on cold starts. If the throttle was bumped at idle, the car would stutter a bit. Never looked into it as it always has gone away within 30 seconds of warming up. That is gone now as well. Couldn't be more pleased with it.

the beisan kit that gary linked above is what i used. good quality stuff, nice how-to guide on his website.

like a few guys above mentioned, it made a noticeable difference in how my car ran too. much smoother, more power. the old o-rings were done.

I was told not to mess with it if I didn't have existing problems with VANOS rattle. I was advised just to do the seals.

I should read the whole thing but if you are doing VANOS, definitely do the anti rattle, no reason not to. Even if you don't have a rattle now it's preventative. If I read this wrong please disregard.

Good information to others contemplating the repair process. I didn't do the anti-rattle on this car as I was told by a couple people to leave that part alone, but I agree with you. If you're in there and you have the time, you should probably just do it.

Yea, school has started up again for me & it's been laying around for about a year... and I'm biking a ton right now.

I had to get a bolt to put through the front fork holder (it didn't come with the fork clamp), and I'm just screwing a wing nut onto that to keep the forks in place. Sort of ghetto, but it holds very well. I just lock the bike around the rear carrier to keep it secured when it's on the car.

Welp,

The clutch finally is biting the dust. On cold days, it will slip hard in 4th-5th gear at around 3k rpm.

I don't know why the temperature affects this??

Anyways,

I ordered the new Valeo single-mass flywheel kit from FCPEuro. It's built and designed specifically for the ZHP. It has a slightly lighter steel single-mass flywheel and a new clutch disk/pressure plate.

Upon inspection today, I checked everything out, and the pressure plate contact surface has some serious marks in it. Is this normal? Is it from shipping and handling? Should I be worried and try to exchange it with FCP before I even begin to think about doing all this?

Also: Has anyone else done this to their ZHP yet, or will I be pioneering this install? Haha.

btw, thanks Slater for all the info and direction. Glad that I got ahold of this kit. It literally only costs $650.

I'll be following the guide made by lkstaak. I am contemplating doing the short shifter while I'm in there... but there's also a strong possibility I'll be selling the car after this happens. We'll see.

Oh, and also this is what I'm currently driving:
My fiance's parents gave me her little brother's old 99 corolla... for free. It had a serious cylinder misfire and barely ran. I tinkered with it a couple of days, did a new set of coils/plugs/wires, air filter, cleared codes, ran fuel system cleaner through it, and now it runs great! Has a CEL for a clogged cat and a nasty valve tick up around 3k RPMS.

But whatever, I think it's funny. Could be worse, I mean it does have A/C. Really effing cold A/C.

Send feedback to FCPEuro and tell them to package it better next time. Some of those marks could have been done at the place of manufacturing too. Where I work we forge and machine aerospace components, primarily for jet engines. Often, our parts will get a ding or scratch, but we only machine to near net shape, so the imperfections will eventually be machined out.

Thanks for the compliment! I try to take really good care of the paint. I had it professionally corrected a year and a half ago.

I try to wash and wax it at least once a month, all by hand with Optimum products (rinseless wash, opti-seal, optimum car wax). Keeps her nice and shiney for sure. I haven't had time to even look at it though, this has been the most time-consuming semester at school by far. That's why I'm considering selling.

I just sent them the email. I'll let y'all know. I don't really feel good about putting that pressure plate on my car - even though it would probably be fine.

I know the feeling of the Missing my ZHP syndrome. Mine was on jack stands for almost 3 weeks as I drove various rental cars. But once it was running again, mygod do I have an appreciation for this car. and the feels it instills. In the words of Clarkson, It is Proper!

I drove it until November, but we have had one of the harshest winters in Boise I have ever seen. There's been at least 1ft of snow on the ground for the past month. The roads are a mess.

It is parked in my dads shop. I just got married, so I've been pretty busy. My wife and I bought a third gen 4Runner that I just fixed (maybe I'll start a build thread on that.)

The ZHP is awaiting the clutch installation. I plan on doing it over spring break, or maybe sooner. I am trying to sell the Corolla and my wife's old car, so my hands are pretty full.

Oh yeah, I'll be here for a bit. The wife is telling me we should sell the ZHP and keep her mazda protege5 (whut?) But the clutch is going in for maintenance. My clutch now won't hold in 4th gear and up at 3k+ rpms.

The plan is to sell off the crappy Corolla that I've had for a bit, her protege, and then keep/maintain the ZHP and the 4runner.

I can. not. wait. to drive my zhp again. The want is real.

Good lord the fuel economy is so bad. The most I have squeezed out of it around town is 16mpg

Stay stock stay worry free. I get a little better than that. Mostly on the highway. 400+ miles to a tank. So about 23-24. Around town it really depends on my right foot. The manual helps. These were made back in the day when manuals did save you an mpg or two. I wouldn't own a 3rd gen auto. They aren't bad but the manual is just so choice. #saveferris

Ain't that the truth. It's lifted a little high for my tastes. Eventually I'll do new shocks and springs. I would rather have like a 2" lift, I don't plan on needing to fit 35's... Ever. I am thinking that's where a lot of the MPG's are going. Because it is now regeared to 4.30, which pretty much makes up for the bigger tires.

Yeah, I had thought about re-gearing for my e-locker retrofit but ultimately kept the 4.10 for the same reasons. 2-2.5 inch lift maybe in the future and no plans to ever fit 35s. Most I'd go is 32-33.

Initial priority is to address current issues. I had it throughly inspected today but well regarded Indy and it needs wheel bearing on one wheel, coolant overhaul with new radiator and oil filter housing gasket. Then replace all fluids. That's a chuck of change. Then I'll have some fun with new suspension overhaul (Koni)

I worked on my car today!
My in-laws need to borrow one of our cars for a bit,so the ZHP is going back on the road.

I started it up today and drove across town and back. As soon as I got out of it, I smelled antifreeze... oh great.

Upon getting underneath the car, I can see a little moistness and white oxidation around the bottom of my NEW expansion tank that I put in less than a year ago! It only has 10k miles on it. I pushed on the bottom of the big connector the tank sits on, and coolant started dripping out.

What gives? Is it the o-ring up in there? Good thing I bought the tank from FCP...

As always, FCP came through and is swapping out my busted expansion tank.

The failed tank on my car now is a Meyle. I'm not really even sure why I got a Meyle one in the first place... but obviously the rubber seal on the bottom is garbage (only lasted about 8k miles.)

The new tank is OEM BMW, hopefully it will last longer.

Put the replacement expansion tank in. There was a hairline crack at the bottom of the Meyle one. Don't buy them! OEM BMW or bust. No more coolant smells, she should be good to go! My rear tires are pretty low on tread, probably time to start shopping for a new set.

Thank you sir! I believe on my next set of tires I'll be going with 255/35/18's, raising it up 1/2" all around, and dialing the camber back a little bit. I'm doing more commuting these days and less "fun" driving, so I'll get more even tire wear.

Glad I'm not the only one. Removing the CDV was easy. Finding a way to turn the bleed valve was not.

It's pretty awful, honestly. I found an angle to hold an end wrench just barely so that I could turn it!

Looks great...love the concave Arc-8 look on all 4 corners! 255s even raising it a 1/2 inch I'd imagine you'll get some rubbing unless you pull the fenders...I had the 18x9.5 Arc-8s with 255-35s in the rear of my coupe with the fenders rolled and would rub when the suspension compressed.
