View Full Version : Lifter Tick

So I've read a lot about (what I'm assuming is) a slight lifter tick my car has, and has had since I got it. Probably the only reason I even noticed it was because my previous e46, an xi, was perfectly, buttery, smooth. I've heard it's pretty normal though, especially after an autocross event, etc. so I ended up not really worrying about it.

Going to jump around for a second here, but our Grand Cherokee has a bit of a vibration when stopped in drive. I didn't have any luck after changing the trans fluid, so I took a wild guess and figured it might be dirty injectors. I picked up a bottle of marvel mystery oil and started adding it to the tank at fill ups. Hasn't done anything yet, but to be honest I didn't have my hopes too high :)

When I last checked the ZHP's oil, it was a little on the low side. Instead of adding oil, I figured what the heck, I'll throw in a little of the marvel stuff that's sitting on the shelf. Didn't expect anything to come of if, but I had it so why not. Well, 50 miles in, no change. 100 miles, still no change. 150 miles though, lifter tick was significantly decreased. Like really close to gone. Shortly after that is the confusing part. The 4k dip went away. Now the only time that's happened is when the adaptations have been reset. I'm not sure why they would have reset though. I didn't reset them, didn't disconnect the battery, nothing. And I don't have any reason to believe a little oil additive would cause them to reset, but I don't have any reason to believe it actually fixed the dip either. So who knows. I highly suspect it'll be back very soon, but at least I'm pretty psyched about the lifter tick deal. I hope it actually cleaned something, but maybe it was just the change in viscosity. Although I only added an eighth of a quart maybe, so not sure how much that would change it. Either way, the car sounds so much better idling.

Not endorsing that you do this yourself; I honestly don't know much about this stuff. But this is just what I observed using it :thumbsup

Interesting, This product appears to very much like seafoam.

They give basically the same direction as well. 4oz for deep cleaning, and 2oz per gallon to maintenance cleaning.

Seafoam
Pale Oil (basically a resolute highly refined oil)
Naphtha (naphtha is a stoddard solvent)
IPA (isopropyl alcohol)

Marval Mystery Oil
Mineral oil (basically a resolute highly refined oil)
Stoddard solvent (naphtha is a stoddard solvent)
lard (strange?)

I can only assume. I didn't into it too deep as I got sidetracked by work.

Interesting. I like the bit about easier cold weather starts, can't hurt to maybe do this a bit for the next oil change.

I've only experienced the lifter tick after autocross events where I forget to add a little extra in...or if I drive like a bat out of hell (see: sig pic).

Used to use this stuff in the diesels all the time when I lived in Ak. It's a good product.

Ok, quick update. Probably another 150 commuting miles added since I first posted. Both my tick and 4k dip remain greatly reduced. I expect the dip to return eventually, but I'm hoping the tick is "fixed". :fingerscrossed

Somebody enlighten me - is the infamous 4k dip Vanos related? If so, I can see the Marvel Mystery Oil helping - it's essentially a high-detergent oil. It will clean clogged or restricted oil passages, which could reduce lifter tick and might also improve the Vanos performance. Then again, I'm not a Vanos expert, so hoping somebody who knows more than I will chime in...

Final update...

Car's still running smoother/quieter at idle, but the dip is back in full force. Somehow it must have just reset the adaptations. All in all, pretty happy with the newfound smoothness. Sounds like an inline six should.
