Much Better! :thumbsup I sent you a PM on thoughts and what I use.... for everyone here my radar detector of choice is the Valentine V1. I like having the bogey counter, directional arrows, and indication as to what type of radar and/or laser is being used against me when I'm driving...

I think investing in a good radar detector is a good thing but keep in mind.... don't get a radar detector so you can evade police traps... get them so you can have a better sense of what's happening while you're driving. I have found that most people tend to drive like idiots whenever they unexpectedly see a patrol officer running their radar on the highways so I use my Valentine to help alert me whenever radar is employed so I can be more aware of my surroundings, especially when people are driving ahead of me. I pretty much see them slamming on their brakes and when I go by I'm exactly at the posted speed limit ;)

I started researching radar detectors recently as well. Here are the ones I narrowed it down to. I listed them by price not preference or rating. Personally I'm leaning towards the Valentine One or the Escort Passport 9500IX.

Click on the Links below:

Valentine is the way to go. If you really want more info than the unit add the smart phone interface. Also they are upgradable over time so you get the improvements. Just had mine done so now I don't get alarms for the blind spot detectors etc.

Jon, how about the Volvo lasers that are used as part of their active braking? My V1 gives me the laser warning every time I come up on the newer Volvos....

I have two friends with Escorts and one with the Valentine . I have seen both have issues with the newer cars and their adaptive cruise controls, etc.

My main gripe with the Valentine is....its ugly and the Escorts are much better looking! haha!

Yes the Valentine styling is old compared to some of the newer radar detectors but you can't take from them the features that they come with.... personally, I don't mind how they look as I get all the information I need while driving. :thumbsup

Don't think they can do anything about that. But laser alerts on one of the 2 I pay real attention to.

Escort just launched the Max 360, too. It's a bit pricey at $650, but Exscort is saying it's the most advanced detector on the market. Hey, at least Escort finally has directional indicators! ;) It does look pretty impressive - GPS, Bluetooth, app integration, and a little more modern look and a nice color OLED display.

https://www.escortradar.com/max360/

Aesthetically, I don't like any of them. I still look the look and feel of my original Passport circa 1990. The design and case just felt so high-quality compared to all the plastic-y new stuff. It's totally obsolete, but I still cherish that thing.

OOohhhh... A weatherproof box to mount a V1 inside of! So, a hair under $500 in V1, RC EURO SP, remote display, and audio adapter to do what it takes $900 to do with a Passport 8500CI Plus. Not bad!

Looks pretty sweet. $650 isn't too bad considering the options it has.

MULTI-COLOR OLED DISPLAY
Includes four different color settings:
Blue, Red, Green, and Amber

I agree 100%, but if I have to look at the thing every day while driving I at least want it to look good! If it saves me from a pricey ticket, then I guess it could look as ugly as it wants though!

Agreed. In most locales, it isn't the ticket you have to worry about. Hell, if a ticket was a couple of hundred bucks and it would end there, I could tolerate getting a ticket every year or two just fine. But, where you really get boned - and for years - is insurance! I'm just guessing, but even if your driving record is otherwise totally clean, I bet in most cases, you end up paying for a $150 speeding ticket 4-6 times over (or more) in increased premiums. I shopped for insurance last fall, and when I asked one agent why my insurance has only climbed over the last five years, he stated that it was likely a couple of tickets we have on our records. :mad

Gary.... you have to excuse Botond's comment above.... he doesn't own an E46 ///M. I too find myself driving relatively faster when driving in my ///M, which is why I tend to favor taking my ZHP out all the time as my "daily driver". I tend to drive slower with my ZHP than I do with the ///M. Something to do with having that extra 100hp....gawd! That ///M's S54 does sound so damned good at WOT... it just begs you to go fast all the time! :biggrin Botond will someday own an ///M and it will be faster than our E46 ///Ms.... then he will understand why we want to go fast in our ///Ms ;)

As for which radar detector is the best one to get??? I say get the one that works best for you... I chose the Valentine V1 radar detector because I really use the bogey counter and directional arrow feature found on these radar detectors. They work perfectly and let me know if there's more than one threat as I'm driving on the road... to me that's very valuable information. Many times my V1 has saved my butt and I would have plenty of time to go at the posted speed limit while other's around me were passing me only to come up on the patrol officer who is hidden monitoring traffic...

Dude... I had an E30 with an S50 in it, which kept up with E92 M3's and Ferrari 355's (ask me how I know) ...
I just have self restraint. :p

I think it is a good investment to have, as Charlie told me once...
to be aware of you surroundings and keep ahead of the game, definitely will try to buy one soon because I have noticed an increase of my speed driving the ZHP. LoL I wonder how driving habits will change in an M3
saw a nice one for $9900 with 133K one owner on Cars.com
if I had not bought the ZHP a couple of weeks ago would have jumped on it fast.
silver coupe manual M3 for $9900.... [emoji14]

The real value is you know where the officer is - cause 10 out of 10 times everyone else slams on brakes as soon as they see him/her. This way you have already slowed down if you are speeding and are ready for what traffic will do.

My nickname is 'Speedo the Brief'...and I could use one of these. Definitely researching this for after the holidays. My car will be pushing 400 to the wheels when the engine is finished. Right now, I'm at 300 and that's enough trouble. But I cannot afford any more tickets.

Granted the obvious answer is not to speed, but the car is what it is.

Are there any elegant solutions for a hidden install?

well the two hidden systems that stand out what I have seen are the Beltronics Stir r Plus and the escort 9500ci
both are custom install

Okay good to know. The price on this is less than appealing but if its the cost of being able to drive with enthusiasm on a daily basis, sign me up.

Looking into the Escort. They have a pretty good reputation in the Porsche community.

Alikessu
10-16-2015, 02:03 PM
the only thing after doing a lot of reading is that the escort system has not been updated for a while
and the Beltronics is the cheaper option to get into, but you will have to buy the radar Jammers separate, but in that case you can pick the ones you want, instead in the escort your are stuck with what they give you.
if you search up Radar Roy you will get a lot of info on radar detectors on his website
