Goin' HAM3: An E90 M3 story

In case some (most) missed it, I picked up an E90 M3 last weekend and have been demanded by several to create a thread for the build. Lol.

This car will be my daily driver as WEGOHAM the E46 M3 retires for track/Sunday duty. I was driving a great 328xi wagon as a daily but I have just found out that I want more performance out of my daily (because I found myself always wanting to drive the other M3 anyway). A little raise at work kinda helped too so here we go. Who knows maybe it's a bad idea but only 1 way to find out.

So here are the details.

08 E90 M3
DCT trans (friendly in traffic)
Alpine White
Black Leather with Aluminum Trim
Premium pkg
Cold Weather pkg
iDrive
EDC equipped
Sunroof
61k miles and enthusiast owned and maintained


Car came with a lot of mods, a good portion will be parted out to make the car my own.

Kwv3s - replaces EDC
Wedssport sa-55M wheels
CF splitters
CF boot lid (low rise)
Depo tails (yuck)
CF diffuser
PlatteformAG CF side extensions
CF oversized intake manifold cover (30% more air, 100% more HAM)
Macht Schnell test pipes
Uuc corsa cat back exhaust
Evolve tuning and coding (for exhaust)
^will likely swap for Eurocharged at some point [emoji6]

And maybe a few other small things I'm forgetting.

Awesome! Which parts are you planning to keep and which are you planning to get rid of?

Weds are going for sure. I can't do 19" wheels I'm Chicago it's too risky and not comfortable. Will go with 18" apex likely.

Trunk and tails are going, doing and LCI conversion and BMW performance CF spoiler

Acs roof spoiler going (forgot to mention that one)

Side skirt extensions are already up for sale (maybe I can talk Joop into those LOL)

I'll probably part ways with the front splitters too just cuz I want to NOT scrape them up.

Undecided on the uuc corsa exhaust, would like it to be louder so ill either modify the X pipe or get a different less restrictive muffler.

I can feel the difference in torque a bit (sc puts the e46 at 350ft/lb), and the e46 is also lighter but this thing is no slouch either. I might have gotten too much car for a daily lol

Yeah I haven't gotten on it long and hard enough yet but it's a lot of fun. DCT is cool and I don't regret my choice but this car should be a manual to really be enjoyed and feel more connected to like the E46 M3.

I guess it's actually a good thing cuz I will likely always want to go back and drive the E46 M3 this way but still have fun driving very spirited on a daily basis.

Just don't ever let your car stop moving at ORD/MDW passenger drop off areas. Got a MDW ticket while I was still in the freakin car. Lady came up and just slapped it on the windshield. Don't even know how she wrote it so fast...wasn't sure if I should be amazed or pissed.

Yeah. But you can always buy a 3rd party warranty instead that's serviceable at any Indy shop. Actually is a better deal most of the time instead of paying the premium BMW charges for theirs.

Coming along. Got the old trunk off and replaced it with an LCI trunk and LCI tail lights. Added in a BMW Performance CF spoiler for good measure. Will have an M3 badge soon hopefully (ordered like a month ago still waiting).

Need to code out the bulb check cuz I'm getting error message as I figured I would.

Felt good to get some work done on her I've been delayed in completing.

An E90 M3 sedan is my 'affordable dream car'. Someday....

It was affordable in payments but the maintenance was about to go HAM on my wallet with the rod bearings, throttle actuators and such needing replacement.

It truly was a pleasure to drive for a little over a year in both Chicago and across the country to Arizona. Most can't say they've done that in a car of this caliber so I'm happy to be one of the few. The sound of the V8 combined with the exhaust was Maserati-like and is why I probably kept it longer than I should have being financially responsible. Glad I got "a taste" of it though. :)

I was into Acuras before I got the BMW bug. This one is gonna be run-of-the-mill as they come. Only mods it'll ever see are weather tech mats and a Blackhawks plate frame lol

No... the Acura is. E90 M3 was potent. Just be careful if you pick one up, the rod bearings and throttle actuators all go and its like $4-6k to do them all.

I wouldn't mind seeing a pic of the ILX too! I've always been a fan of Acura. Had a brand new 2001 integra gsr, a new 2004 6 speed TSX, a couple TLs along the way, and as recent as two years ago, a 1 owner 28k mile Type R (really regret selling that as it is worth double today).

The ILXs are neat cars. The first two years of production did have a manual option for the sport trim. They unfortunately discontinued offering the manual.

I had an 06 TSX 6MT Navi... loved that thing but found the BMWs right after and fell deeper.

Base model buddy... there isn't a type S offered here in America, only the A-Spec package which is a body kit and 18" wheels. :(

It's got an 8spd DCT with paddles so it's not horrible but these cars make 0 torque lol.

That Acura was the second worst car decision of my life (04 Chevy Cavalier was the first).


Update since I’ve been gone -

Moved back from AZ to Chicago in June ‘17 with my little Acura. She was gone before the end of the year unfortunately. Car ended up getting stolen out of my parking lot.

So then I slummed it with an AMG for about a year and it was fun, sooooo fast but it was always having something break on it. A fun panzer, but it never felt the same as the BMWs did.

In Jan of 2018, in the middle of a blizzard actually,
I found myself a 2015 AW M235i (had it shipped to iND directly from the dealership to get snow tires on it immediately lol).

Car was tons of fun. Exactly what I was wanting (back seat space aside).
