View Full Version : Which floor jack to use for my '04 330cic ZHP?

First I bought "any jack" and learned about clearance. Then I bought a low profile jack, but when I get it under the car, there's no clearance to actually pump the jack handle and lift the car. WTH? That has left me lifting by the jack points by the rockers and placing the jack stands under the frame rails. Even being careful, I've already slightly bent one rail (<pisses me off). What does everyone else do to avoid this?

I have a low profile jack from HF. It's tight to get under it when the car has settled, but I usually can. I'm on stock springs in the front. Ask some of the low riders round here...

Pittsburgh low profile jack lasted me three years and has recently died. Going with the ECSTuning aluminum race jack next. Plus four of the Schwaben jack stands.

Use the side point to jack it up, get it high enough to slide a 2x4 under the tire. Now go back to center or rear jack points, lift it and place jack stands under the side lift points. Have fun with repairs and reverse process to get it back on the ground. BP's car is lowered so we used 4x4's under the front wheels last weekend.

Alternate solution, buy 2-2x10 by about 16' boards, line them up and back the car up on those (might need to duct tape them to you garage floor to prevent sliding), you should have enough clearance to get to all jack locations while using side lift points for your Jack stand locations.

Nice. Thanks for the ideas, guys!! I really like the idea of using the boards to give a little more height initially.

Exactly my method. Plus I prefer the jack stands under the frame rails.

Dane, I have the same Pittsburgh jack from Harbor Freight, how exactly do these "die?" Always been curious about that...not that I ever trust it by itself, but does it fail while it's lifting or does it just fail to rise when pumped? :shifty

Mine has air in it. I've tried to DIY vent it, and no luck. Imho, it lasting 3 years has paid for itself.

The seals are shot in that jack... could be rebuilt with the proper seal kit but why bother...

I use a the HF low profile jack too... with the ECS block that fits in the jack point. If I can't get the jack under there, I just drive the car onto a couple of short pieces of 2X4.
if I have to put the car on jack stands, Use the jack point on the front aluminum subframe reinforcement plate to lift the whole front of the car... same with the rear.

This is my go to jack... HF 3 Ton Low Profile (http://www.harborfreight.com/3-ton-low-profile-steel-heavy-duty-floor-jack-with-rapid-pump-61282.html). A little tight getting it under the ZHP, but I like it for its versatility. Works for the ZHP without planks while still getting high enough to get my (just slightly) lifted Jeep's tires in the air. Will have had it going on a year now; no problems except for a squeaking I can't quite track down.

I have the same Jack Ryan and it has worked great. i did see this add for some great jack stands called lifts stand

And I use this method. Works every time.

Funny story- I started to do this when lifting the X5 the other day. I LOL'ed, removed boards, grab a chuck of 4X4 wood to use with the jack, since my low pro only reaches so high.
