Well, what started as a project to swap an S54 into my 2003 ZSP 330Ci (http://www.zhpmafia.com/forums/showthread.php?16126-Lazlo%92s-330Ci-ZSP-Plans), has turned to madness. After securing the funds for the parts needed, I went looking for the needed gear for the swap. And then this past weekend, I laid eyes on a complete car with a front hit. After a few days of vacillating between swap, repair or walk away, I made the decision last night. Some soul-searching and discussions with like-minded people resulted in me putting a deposit on a salvage M3 to save it from doom at the crusher.

Specs: Front end hit. No airbag deployment (I have a suspicion that the car was stationary and not running when struck) no structural damage, starts, runs and doesn't leak anything. Other than the obvious damage, the exterior and interior is very clean, demonstrating that the owner took care of this car.

2002 Silver Gray, MT with 99,xxx miles. Leather, heated seats.

Timetable and plan thus far:

Take delivery of the car next week (likely the 3rd or 4th of Dec)

Remove all broken parts and inventory

Prioritize parts list

Acquire A and B parts from varied sources

A. Required to pass inspection and be road-worthy
B. “While you’re in there” parts to refresh non-broken stuff (e.g.: VANOS)
C. Nice, but don’t need immediately (rod bearing…)

Assemble, repair and prep for state inspection

Paint

Register

Acquire C parts

I will try to update this thread periodically as to the progress in bringing back to life this fine example of an M3. Further, I will update on people’s reactions to this decision. “Who needs three E46 Coupes?” I do. The best reaction was my 7 yr old daughter last weekend when showing her photos – “Daddy, that car has no eyes.”

I think you will be very happy at the end of this project. :thumbsup

It really is a sharp color combo. I am glad it will bring some contrast to the two black/black coupes that I already own.

I am looking forward to this project and adventure. If I am not happy at the end, I will drive myself mad playing the “woulda’, coulda’, shoulda’” game in my head.

“I would have bought a complete later model M3…”

“I should have gotten sedan…”

“I could have done something normal, sold all my BMWs and bought a Camry.”

Thanks for the well-wishes, all. Happy Thanksgiving!

Thanks, Charlie! I visited the car today and looked at even closer. Damn, this is going to be a sharp car. Between now and Christmas, the broken parts will be removed and starting in January, UPS driver will be cursing me; I don't have the heart to tell my 7 yr old daughter that Santa will be skipping her this year because Daddy has, "problems."

Nope. I have problems. I just had a box show up with parts for my '03... I don't think it is going anywhere, anytime soon.

Looks more like Steel grey than Silver gray though. Had a Steel grey Cic for a couple of years before the zhp, and its pigment is darker like in your pics than Silver gray. Great color since it has chameleon like qualities depending upon ambient lighting conditions.

Anyway, congrats on scooping this up. Looking forward to your progress with this project. :)

Not sure if you are into this kind of thing, but if you decide to add the piece de resistance in the distant future you might consider swapping over to Imola red interior bits which I think complement the grey exterior nicely. But if you are fine with the stock interior, or if it's going to cut into your lovely daughter's happiness any further feel free to disregard this suggestion. :)

I certainly didn't consider it until you posted about it, posted pics and those pics resulted in my cargo pants getting a little tighter.

But if you are fine with the stock interior

Black leather now looks so... pedestrian. Damn you, Mike.

if it's going to cut into your lovely daughter's happiness any further feel free to disregard this suggestion.

I will have my daughter in front of the local grocery store, with threadbare Mechanix gloves, begging for donations with a sign that says, "I won't get to go to racing school until my Daddy has Imola interior for his M3."

Is that a F355 in the garage as well?

Yup. Not mine, photo from the seller. It has been sold.

Great project or the cause of my further deepening mental illness. Time will tell...

Thanks to 1M Mike, I have already priced an Imola interior. Seeing as how the tech doing work on my car is interested in the interior of my project M for his coupe, I may be able to offset the acquisition cost. I already did the math. Crap.

Quite true. I am finding some stuff used or on the secondary market. Some stuff, like the cooling system, doesn't make sense to buy used. Though, stuff like AC bits, it does. Scouring Ebay looking for parts and at times, stuff on Ebay is more expensive than buying new from a dealer... weird.

I think Charlie and I know the same guy... He's getting a shopping list soon.

Well, it has begun. First set of parts arrived today. No looking back now.

Radiator support and pusher fan arrived via FedEx.

But, the gnashing of teeth from my lovely girlfriend started over the weekend. Had to break the news to her... She accused me of having a mental illness. Lunch today was fun with her today with the (good natured) teasing she gave me. "I don't want to hear over the phone that you bought a 4th BMW coupe!"

Glad to contribute to the lack of productivity!

This thread is fun and I haven't even done anything to the car of substance. All I have to show for my efforts is a rad support and fan sitting in my kitchen. It seems like a logical place, right next to the box of parts for my 03 (clutch, shifter bits and strut mounts)

I am going to stop cooking for myself. As long as the approach to coffee maker is clear for foot traffic, my kitchen could be a good place for BMW parts.

Well, given that she is dating me, that will give a little insight into her state of mind. With that being said, she has two rescue dogs (your dog photo is apropos) and I articulated it to her last night thusly, "You rescue dogs that were abandoned and unloved. I am doing the same. This M3 will be brought back to its original glory; it will be cared for, properly maintained and loved." She laughed and called me names. Oh well. BMW people are weird, I guess.

OK – So far, here is the running tab as of this date, 12/5.

Not including the car, this is what I have sitting in my kitchen, or enroute.

USED: $964.97

L & R xenon assemblies with corner lights - $450.00 (Ebay)
Radiator support and pusher fan - $199.95 (Ebay)
AC Condenser - $49.90 (Ebay)
Airbox and MAF (Botond is going to cry) - $135.00 (Ebay)
Air Conditioning Lines – $130.12 (Ebay)

NEW: $1,018.15

L & R Headlight trim and fender liners - $136.21 (Guten)
Radiator Shroud and mounting gear - $297.38 (Turner)
Coolant Expansion Tank, OFHG, VCG, VANOS oil line, filter, etc - $493.76 (Turner)
Headlight trim (L & R) - $90.80 (Ebay)

OUTSTANDING (assuming buying new and at street prices, as I am hoping to bring down the spend on the hood and bumper cover by finding used): $3,750.00

Hood and assorted bits, bumper cover and assorted bits, headlight eyebrows, tires, Beisan VANOS stuff (priority B), cooling system overhaul kit, mirror repair, odds and ends (trim and attachment hardware)

Overall, this is right where I expected to land with respect to parts. Even adding in a Priority B VANOS gear… Now, all I have to do is beg, borrow, steal and negotiate for the little body work (fender) and paint… Furthermore, in the grand scheme of things, I am rationalizing some of the gear as not part of the "rebuild" (e.g.: Cooling Overhaul Kit and oil gaskets) as if I bought an M3 off the street, all those things would have to be done, anyway. At least, that helps me sleep better at night.

So, between parts for the project and on-line Christmas shopping, I have cardboard boxes and parts all strewn about. Today's UPS shipment contained no BMW parts, but rather, the final present for my girlfriend. I am thinking it would be beyond funny if I replaced her gift (thoughtfully wrapped in a blue/white Tiffany box) with some random M3 part for her to open on Christmas day. I will go a long way for a joke, but I am afraid for my personal safety.

Well, my lovely g/f and I swapped gifts on Friday - holidays are crazy with split families - kids, travel, etc...

As expected, her reaction was predictable - She first asked "WTF is this?" and had to explain the part and purpose (AC Drying Container) after which, I was called an asshole, physically struck and commented that it was good joke. Payback for making fun of my "BMW problem."

She also asked a funny question - "Tell me, what do you look at more often on the internet? Porn or BMW content?"

I lied; told her that I look at porn more often. She called me out on it.

In addition to very thoughtful and romantic gifts from her, she is covering a lapping day for me so I can, "go play with one of my cars."

As of this date, not including purchase price, I am into this project for $2,563.91 (less 11.95 for a coffee cup). The major outstanding parts and pieces that have not been sourced yet: Hood, bumper cover & mounting hardware, cooling system (rad, hoses, WP, belts) and tires. Little parts (mounting hardware and quantities) are being inventoried.

And a call-out to cakM3 - He hooked me up with donated fogs for my M Project! Thanks, Charlie!

So, visited my car today. The shop where it is has been slammed with (paying) customers. The young guy ("EB") who works on all my cars gave me a SITREP today and since I had off to take The Beast (my 7yo daughter) to her pediatrician today for her annual checkup, I figured it was a good time to have her visit, The Car With No Eyes. EB had the car up on a lift and poked, prodded and banged on stuff to find more busted / need to replace / good idea to replace gear...

The good news:

The parts I have ordered have been spot on based on casual observation and poring over the photos like an over-caffeinated imagery analyst. To date, I have over-ordered:

AC drying unit & lines
Brake cooling ducts and snorkel
Passenger side porkchop

No codes!
Bushings and rubber bits look and feel good
No leaks from the stock suspension (allows me to delay purchase, hopefully)

The bad news, he added some parts that I need and should get:

Sway bar end links (already sourced from cakM3 - Thanks, Charlie!)
Suggested to replace all pre and post cat O2 sensors
Hood latch cable (forgot that)

The only outstanding parts that I still need to get:

Cooling system refresh kit
New F&R Brakes
Refinish the wheels
New meats (Mich PSS)
Battery
Left tail light bulb holder
Plugs and misc filters
Strut brace
Hood & Bumper cover (if anyone has a line on these OE bits, please let me know)
Waiting for my mirror to come back from radar-mirror.com for its repair

The Beast followed me in the shop, since she only saw photos of the car when she named it, The Car With No Eyes (TCWNE would be a cool custom license plate). She likes it, but questioned why Daddy has three cars. "Because Daddy has problems." Her confusion turned to excitement when the owner's Dad was in the shop and told her that it will likely be her car when she gets older. A very shady grin came across her face upon hearing that... 10 years from now, I will still hope to have my M3 and it would be pretty damn cool for her to take her road test in an almost 25 year old M3.

:headbang

Here it is. Still crashed-looking but there is a bright light at the end of the tunnel. Look, the Roundel isn't even cracked! For sentimental reasons, I may leave the original Roundel installed on the new hood...

Wow that's a lot of stuff. Good luck.

Thanks. It is a lot of stuff. Sitting with EB, we discussed the amount of stuff. The rationale is this: If I bought 100k mile M3 without crash damage, much of the stuff would have to done anyway (e.g.: Cooling, O2 sensors, oil gaskets/seals, suspension bits, tires) so I get the benefit of being forced to replace stuff because it's, well, broken. :-)

Since we just broke up, I don't think I need to be civil on account of your sensitivity but I find it abhorrent that you take out your anger on our mutual friend, Charlie. And since you introduced us, I will always be thankful to you for that.

So, if you are mad because I skipped the potential of having an Imola interior for my M3, my work on this project follows certain priorities according to inspection, roadworthiness, safety and reliability. Your OCD on a scale of 1 to 10 is maxed out at 11 - You have Spinal Tap-level OCD and I don't see an immediate need to change a perfectly serviceable interior to satisfy some weird fetish you have for interiors other than black when such a change fails to address my immediate budget and list of priorities.

Charlie, Gary and other M people... looking for someone to check my work.

Decided to reverse my decision to freshen up the suspension. Bits and rubber look good, with no leaks from the dampers, but I can't leave well enough alone. While it's on the lift...

- Bilstein PSS10
- Rogue Engineering RTABs and RSMs
- New upper strut mounts
- LCABs (any preferences?)
- New SGT sway bar end links (thanks, Charlie!)
- Diff mounts
- Rogue motor and trans mounts.

Am I missing anything?

24-48 hours after paint is the best time to remove any defects that are in the clear-coat. They wet-sand the spots, then buff them.

Good and bad news.

As part of the process, CT requires that either a dealer or a certified technician certify that the airbag system (bags, controllers and sensors) is present and operational, even if there is no airbag deployment. Went to a dealer on the way and I figured out what was taking them so long... The scanned, no issues, but decided to replace the airbag under the recall despite not having a road worthy title or registration. Whee!

Back on the truck and head to DMV HQ for salvage inspection. FAILED. The car, mechanically speaking, is 100% (more on that below) but I was missing paperwork. CT DMV wants receipts for damn near every part replaced. Motherfucker. Digging through ebay and paypal to get that, plus I have a bunch of other worksheets, too. But, here's the kicker. CT DMV wants the a copy of the original insurance adjuster's report. Now, I have to find that in the bowels of Liberty Mutual. The car is home, resting comfortably, with no tags. Lazlo is sad.

And, getting some power steering whine. Need to figure that one out

The tech @ the BMW dealer stopped me as I was loading up the car and asked if I was selling it. "Dude, you can't even tell that this thing was hit. It's beautiful!"

And, the inspector at DMV even made mention that it was the cleanest salvage come in for quite some time. Asked if I was selling it... LOL.

Thankfully, since the car passed mechanically, all I have to do is run paperwork (when I get it) up to DMV and should be good to go.

Honestly, since we don't have inspections, the amount of cars that don't belong on the road is mind boggling. I'm glad it's so strict on getting salvage cars registered; I'm scared to imagine what kind of garbage would end up on the road here if salvage registration was lax.

I know Ray's good because he doesn't mess around.

Honestly, it isn't that the inspection is strict. That I would understand and consider reasonable. It isn't. The actual physical inspection of "roadworthiness" took no less than 15 minutes.

- Lights (incl. fogs)
- Horn
- Glass
- Wipers and washers
- Seat belts & Seats
- Service/Parking Brake
- Wheel bearings and steering
- Visual underneath (tires, leaks, worn or broken suspension, holes, rust, etc)
- Alignment with antiquated wheel track

Despite the minority of states actually looking for aig bag condition, that doesn't bother me. Again, reasonable. What galls me is the inconsistent application of the policies.

I know Ray's good because he doesn't mess around.

The last time I messed around was 1964.

BP and Charlie are correct, I don't mess around. Floated around Liberty Mutual today on the phone. Inside of 30 minutes, got ahold of the department responsible for writing off the vehicle, and they found the paperwork I was looking for. If all works out, should be tagged tomorrow. <fingers crossed>

What a goat rodeo. Well, 24 hours ago, I thought I was set. No go. Liberty Mutual cannot release what I need, as I am not the policy holder or whom the car was sold.

Finally, just got off the phone with Copart, the salvage co that LM sold the car to. Tammy @Copart was very helpful and good naturedly chided me to the fact that I should have called her first... She knew exactly what I was looking for and getting it released from LM and sent via email.

For those who ever decide to reconstruct a salvage vehicle in CT, call me first!

What a royal PITA. It is ill-advised to bring a salvage car back to life in CT, that's all I will say. No, wait, one more thing: Fuck the CT DMV with a rusty cactus!

My M3 has been garage art for too long. Back and forth with Liberty Mutual, CT DMV, and other shitty minor characters - a fully serviceable M3 sat in the garage taunting me. A move, a job change, a promotion, and travel made the M sit on the back burner. Drive it when I could and decided that if I was going to run afoul of the DMV, do it in a epic fashion and turn it into a race car. Then, sobered up and thought better of my wallet to do that...

Well, as of last month, the M3 was inspected, titled, and today I signed paperwork to get it registered. Should have plates on in in the next 7 to 10 days. Just in time for winter and buying another set of snow tires. I will spare you the gory details, but the method by which the car got titled and registered was a paperwork chase and maybe a little shady.
