Oil consumption?

The yellow oil level light came on when I turned the engine off and I changed the oil just 2500 miles ago!!!

I got about 7000 miles from the previous oil change using bmw 5w-30 during which I also replaced the ccv... This time I went with Mobil 1 0w-40 and the light came on after just 2500 miles... I checked the oil level and it seems little low as well... Even with a bad ccv I got about 3500 miles...

What can cause this sudden change from 7000 miles to 2500 miles?? The only difference as I mentioned is using Mobil 1 instead of bmw's oil...

did you actually check the dipstick level? the sensors can go bad.

Yup, checked the dip stick level and it was low

Here's my understanding...

A "thinner" weight oil will be consumed more quickly than thicker, all other things equal. Get's past seals and gaskets more easily. Higher revs will increase pressure, also resulting in great consumption.

I topped it up with a quart and drove for about 500 miles, no drop in oil level, not even a little bit... There are no oil leaks, Dave (just_george) was kind enough to help me in looking for any leaks at his place yesterday...

That is what I am thinking too, but hard to believe it will cause such a big difference... I topped it up now, so I guess il wait and see if the oil loss continues...

Hahaha...

Yeah, I'd see how it goes. Seems like a lot, but for now as long as you're checking the level you're at least not actively damaging it :)

No, he replaced it recently (maybe 7500 miles back, if memory serves me correctly)
