So will hopefully have some time later today to go through all my photos and will get some updates here! Honestly, I have not done too much to the ZHP in the past year and a half. Its not even registered for 2019 yet but that I am working to fix. I was laid off yet again just over a year ago, and was on unemployment for 6 months trying to find a job and was having no luck. Continued to look for work but no one hires a EHS Manager at the end of the fiscal year. Ended up going home for several months and working as a project manager for my Dad's construction company. Also, my GF and I were experimenting and trying to be a 1 car couple (Yeah right!). I didn't sabotage the experiment, but knew it was not going to work out, especially once I started a full time job again.
I eventually found a great job and will be starting next Monday, the 18th if the background check is done in time! Super excited. New job = new cash flow = new car parts!
I will have some updates thought to show the things I have done which include:
-Fixing the wiring harness leading into the trunk lid
-New lower and upper intake boots
-New vacuum lines everywhere!
-O2 Pilot mod (more info on this later but seems to be common knowledge, at least over at bimmerboards and e46f)
-Replaced front driver side wheel arch lining
-New Oil pan sensor! Was broken when I got the car, figured it was time to put one in lol!
- New O2 sensors (on the way!)
I will also have some updates with datalogs. I was having trouble getting my car to pass smog and did a lot of datalogs to figure out what was wrong. I had several vacuum leaks to fix, but I still couldn't get all the readiness monitors set once they were fixed and I had done a few drive cycles. Eventually I started looking at O2 sensors, and sure enough I finally got a code related to them. Going to replace both the pre-cat ones while I am at it. Bank 2 sensor 1 is the one that failed, but I am going to replace both!
Items still on the to-do-list:
-Suspension!
- Struts front and rear - looking at the new Koni replacements for the FSDs. Will replace all suspension components related to this work
- New bushings everywhere
- Engine Mounts
Obviously need some cash to do the above work, but checks will start coming in a few weeks! In the meantime, should have enough to post to keep my thread active. I will probably dive into the datalogging and SMOG check work so others can find it here if they are having issues.

So my car sat for about 3 months when I went back East to see my family and lend a hand to my Dad's construction company. GF was supposed to start my car and drive it around the parking lot once every week or so but that did not happen. When I returned the battery was flat dead as can be. Unhooked it, brought it to Autozone, picked it up 4 hours later, great time to fire up the ZHP.
Cranked her over and the entire car started shaking and shimmying and it took no time for the rough running engine to throw the SES light. Turned the car off, plugged in the codes scanner, and sure enough misfires everywhere! Cylinder 2, 4 and 5 were throwing codes, plus the generic multiple misfire codes. Despite using Sta-Bil while gone, my injectors gunked up pretty bad it seemed. Took them out for cleaning and this was my setup.
34851
Used an old to go container as the base and collection area with a hanger from tool peg board as the support. Worked perfectly as there just enough room for 6 injectors, and it kept them positioned just right in the tray. Next I followed a tip from Ratchets and Wrenches and put together a cleaning assembly using some spare vacuum lines and some shrink wrap for wiring. Used some electrical tape for good measure after. I used the canned version of SeaFoam, but many products could work here. It was on sale and I plan to use the rest in the engine through the intake manifold as a cleaner.
34852
I don't have a spare car battery around and did not want to lug mine from the car to the house so I connected the leads to a 9V battery and that was enough to actuate the injectors. Hold the spray can button down for several seconds each as they took turns being connected to the battery and boom, cleaning done in no time!
34853
I let the injectors soak over night in the tray and the next morning when I returned, there was a small glob of congealed gas / ethanol that was at the bottom of the tray. I tried to take some pictures of this but don't know if they came out well and I've yet to offload them from my phone. If they came out ill post them, but it was clear that the cleaning had actually cleaned!
Put them back into the car and it ran substantially better! Codes cleared and was back to just the pesky lean codes :/
I have since solved those codes and that will be my next update post!

Thanks Mate! Kinda used what I had laying around the house for the most part. Only bought the cleaner! Real easy to do. I'll write up a DIY for this for others if they need it.

Fantastic! This is perfect timing since I plan on doing the same with my injectors. By any chance, did the lean codes end up being the vacuum plugs on the back of the intake manifold? Just a guess.
Keep up the good work and thanks for keeping me motivated with your thread!

Next bit of work I did was to tackle the vacuum leaks that have been almost a consistent issues with my car. First it was the lower intake boot, then the upper, then the CCV, then the vacuum line to the fuel pressure regulator, then the O-ring where the dipstick tube goes in failed. My intake manifold gaskets also had a leak and were replaced when I did the CCV.
Not wanting to have to deal with these issues anymore, I replaced many parts and lines, even though they passed the smoke test, while many others didn't. I found 3 vacuum leaks when I smoke tested the car using the siphon pump below.
https://www.homedepot.com/p/Pennzoil-9-62-in-Multi-Use-Hand-Pump-36677/205092031
This is a great tool to have and is only $10 at Home Depot. Wish I had some pictures but my phone was dead at the time. Real simple setup though. I put some electrical tape around a cigar and stuck it in one end. Other end of the hose goes into the middle finger of a latex glove and the cuff goes around the upper intake boot. Pretty standard stuff.
Using this method I found 3 vacuum leaks. First and most noticeable was the lower intake boot.
3486134862
This boot is only two years old, but I realized I ordered a non-OEM part. For now one, always OEM! However, the condition of my upper intake boot which is only a year old doesn't look that much better! Already heavily cracked! I am def going to get another one by warrantying this.
34863
It wasn't leaking, but I replaced it anyways to avoid a future headache.
The other two vacuum leaks were one of the vacuum caps on the back of the manifold, the big 7mm one, and my CCV was missing a vacuum cap on the oil / air separator. With both these missing, and my intake side of the engine already out of the engine bay, I decided to install the O2Pilot mod. This is a simple modification where you attach a vacuum line that runs from the back of the manifold to the open port on the CCV. This mod helps to greatly increase the vacuum pressure within the manifold and supposedly helps cut back on oil consumption. My car does consume oil, so I will be interested to see the results from the additional vacuum. Now that I run 5w-40 the consumption has slowed compared to the 5w-30 or 0w-30 the dealership tries to sell you now, but I hope to have it nearly eliminated.
And since I didn't want to have any more vacuum leaks in the near future, I installed these parts as well!
34864
New upper and lower intake boots w/ accompanying F-Connector. All new vacuum lines and various connectors for the O2Pilot Mod. I cleaned the throttle body and replaced the throttle body gasket. I also cleaned the ICV and installed a new rubber grommet where it mounts to the intake manifold. Figured might as well replace these while they are off the car.
With everything back on, the car ran sooooo much better. Like night and day difference! I have some data logs I am working on graphing and will post those soon. There are two very easy ways to tell if your car has a vacuum leak. first being a smoke test and second is looking at fuel trim data. It is very apparent that when your short term fuel trim is 25% and your long term 15% that there is a lot of extra air getting into the engine. I have some pre and post data logs available to show the comparison. My cars idle is almost perfectly steady, but there are still some minor fluctuations.
Up next is this guy:
34865
Stay tuned for some more updates and data logs / graphs showing fuel trims and O2 sensor read outs.

I'm waiting on the GF to finish this quarter at UCSB so she can graph my data logs, I Will then post and share with everyone. It is a very noticeable difference in graphs when you look at the old O2 sensors compared to the new ones.

Few pictures comparing old to new. 148k miles on the car and both the pre-cat sensors were failing, even though I only had a code for one.
349063490734908
Swapping O2 sensors is a very easy job, just requires a special type of socket to remove them without damaging the power cord. I loaned this one from my local Oreillys. It came in a set of 3, with the other being the type you have to reposition after a half turn on so.
34909
You can reach both pre-cat O2 sensors from the top down. It is recommended to remove the cabin air filter housing which is easy as it is only 4 T30 bolts. I opted to remove the secondary air pump for more clearance as it is only held in place by 3 10mm bolts, but this is not a have to.
3491034911
Super easy job! Took about 20 minutes because I was taking photos, but otherwise 10 mins and you can be done and running again. Screenshot from my phone verifying that the new sensors were hooked up. When you turn the key to Aux in the ignition, they should read as follows, .425V:
34912
Another screenshot taken while car was at consistent speed. The read out should be roughly in the .7V to .75V while maintaining a constant speed.
34913
Last screen shot, showing O2 sensor function going from ~25mph to crawling, back to ~25mph.
34914
Readout of my Readiness monitors after installing the new O2 sensor. All eventually turned green after a drive cycle was completed.
34915
My next post will have some graphs and i'll explain them and how to identify O2 sensors that are on the fritz or already doneso!

Sent from my Pixel 2 XL using Tapatalk
I have the OBDLink MX and was using Torque Pro App. I have OBD Fusion as well, and was told this was a better app, but I can only get it to work with my GF's Fiesta ST and not the ZHP :dunno
https://www.amazon.com/ScanTool-OBDLink-Bluetooth-Professional-Diagnostics/dp/B006NZTZLQ
This is a slightly less expensive option by the same company:
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00H9S71LW/ref=sspa_dk_detail_2?psc=1&pd_rd_i=B00H9S71LW&pd_rd_w=MnwRb&pf_rd_p=733540df-430d-45cd-9525-21bc15b0e6cc&pd_rd_wg=z8Nb9&pf_rd_r=SJC3VSC2W4S8164XHREJ&pd_rd_r=ee8d1518-4d01-11e9-91ef-65785d430aa8
I really like the MX and think it is a must have tool now. I've used it in both the FiST and the ZHP and have been logging everything from O2 sensors to Fuel Trims. The MX comes with a free app, but I haven't even tried it. Torque and OBDFusion were only $4.99 each and figured they were more developed.

Ok, so was going to wait for the post work data log to be graphed but my GF is burnt out from this quarter and wants a break from coding. I am sure I can figure out how to graph in Excel but its been some time lol. GF uses a program called R to create graphs, such as this one below. What you see is the recorded read out from both the O2 sensors in voltage. I should have logged vehicle speed, but forgot to set it on in the log. Vehicle speed was consistent 55mph on the highway. This graph shows a series of logs and the spaces in between represent the time between logs. I was trying to run several short logs, thinking it would create a new log file each time in the App, but its not set to do this, hence the gaps in time when I was not recording, but anyways.
34918
As you can see, constant up and down fluctuations while driving a mostly consistent speed, indicative of an issue. There is one small section of the log where Bank 1 seems to almost be in "spec" but there is an unexpected dip in the middle of that section. And then the sensor goes back to fluctuating up and down. The sensor should read around ~.7V while maintaining speed.
I ended up throwing a P2240 code shortly after this log was taken and ended up replacing both sensors because the data showed similar performance between the two of them. Any ways hope to have a more graphs posted over the next few days here.
How's the car drive after cleaning the injectors and replacing o2 sensors?
Oh, btw, it seems that you go back and forth between Irvine and Santa Barbara. Do you live in SB and travel to Irvine for work?
Random coincidence because I live in Irvine, and spent my undergrad years at UCSB (well, Goleta, really. lol).

I also fixed a few vacuum leaks and honestly, the car drives better now than when I got it a few years ago (3? I forget, man time flies). I actually have a smooth idle for once! Needle is as steady as it'll ever get. As for the new O2 sensors, I'm helping to see some improved gas mileage, but that is more likely going to be affected by my driving habits. Car needs a lot of new bushings, so I don't drive her to hard, for the moment.
I used to work down in Irvine, and technically I live in Goleta too :) My GF is a grad student at UCSB and I Live a stones throw from I.V., but luckily not in IV lol. However, I can still hear the loud ragers every know and then, takes me back. I no longer work in Irvine, so no more long commutes on Monday morning and Friday afternoons. However, there is something about bombing down the 1 early morning around 4am before anyone is on it. Hit Malibu in time for the sun to start rising, very beautiful. But then next half of the journey would take twice as long as the first, and having a manual gearbox in traffic is annoying because the minute you want to "roll" every single other driving dive bombs in front of you, only to slam on their brakes.
I loved the job, but it was too far away to make things work, and the ZHP was starting to rack up the miles very quickly. I'll be starting a new job in Carpenteria next week which is an easy commute, only 20 miles or so and against the heavy flow of traffic.
If you ever up this way let me know! I'll do the same if I end up south. Also, if you find something on craigslists or the forums or something that is close, I can check it out for you, although probs a lot more activity down your way. Kinda quiet up here in comparison to L.A. / OC area.

Reason for cleaning out trunk is to do a more thorough repair of the wiring harness going into the trunk.
I kinda did a half ass repair with what was in the trunk awhile back so I wouldn't get pulled over for having my passenger tail lights out. As you can see, didnt have much on hand and ended up using the tail end of two types of electrical tape.
The local electronics supply store recommended this product below and I am going to give it a try and see how well it holds up in comparison to electrical tape. I'm hoping it does the job until I have some spare cash to but the new wiring harness. Surprisingly expensive! Even for the repair kits I've seen.
I'll take some photos once I open her up again. If I am remembering correctly, I had 3 wires that broke in half from age and use of the trunk.
Side note, great day to work on the car. Almost 70, sunny, light breeze :)https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190324/afac0d8ed7cad9c021fed3f1169847df.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190324/dd97e9e11e0b90461812edd6b3c10c65.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190324/892bdb689c758fe611b082622faf9c54.jpg

Well, got the harness opened up again and it was in worse shape than I remember! Unfortunately I had to run to the store to get a few more crimp connectors and ran out of time to do the repairs. GF parents are in town, so free time is limited. Luckily, no rain til Wednesday morning so I got a few days to get it done up right.

If anyone has bought a product to do this repair, I would love to know what you ended up using. Trying to find the best permanent solution to avoid continued failures down the road. I was looking at the products offered by Schmiedmann, but have never heard of them before. Time to try and hunt down some reviews.

I haven't done it on my car yet. but on other cars I've repaired, we just buy wire and I just solder and heat shrink everything. Then I would electrical tape the entire bundle of wires before shoving it back in the rubber. On one car, he didn't want to cut the rubber, so we had to pull the wires through the rubber. Shit was a bitch, but so clean when it was done.

Rain tomorrow morning says the weather man so just repaired the trunk wiring harness. I used the product from my previous post and have to say it is pretty awesome! Just not in this application:(
The way the tape works, is you stretch it out by x2 or x3 the length it is as you wrap around the object, in this case the rubber sleeve around the wires. The problem is with the trunk hinge and support shock next to the harness, there really isn't enough room to get it to stretch out and it was a huge PIA. I did get er done and was able to go up the rubber and back down for two layers, but really felt unsure about the water proofing at the two ends. You can see in one picture where the tape is kinda loose at the end, so I trimmed it a bit.
I then used a bit of silicone to go over the ends and over the grommets to make sure it was sealed. The silicone goes on white but dries clear which is great so you can see how much you put where. The harness is definitely better protected now than it was before, but I'll eventually buy a new rubber sleeve and a wiring repair kit.

It's funny that BMW didn't find a better way to do that wiring after e36's trunks were catching on fire in people's driveways. While grocery shopping with my friend, we heard over the intercom "would the owner of a black Bmw 2 door come to the front of the store". As we walked up, we noticed the fire trucks all around his e36 M3, which was engulfed in flames! Pretty sure that was why. Luckily, the fire was interior and trunk only and he recouped some losses by selling the engine and driveline. Worst part was, it was middle of winter, but a nice day so we took the car out of storage, figuring it be good to run it, but since it was it was in storage for the winter, he dropped the full comprehensive insurance :(
I can't imagine having to fish wires back there, looks like a PITA, but I'll probs pull the whole harness out and put in a new one in a few months. Will hopefully put in LED taillights at the same time too

Might as well run a backup camera while you're in there. It's a game changer!

When I put in the replacement harness I probably will install a camera too. I am making a new maintenance list, a wish list, and a tech update list. I had cameras front & rear, Bluetooth adapter, and maybe a USB plug on the list so far.
If you're able to wait for a few weeks on the bluetooth adapter there's a guy on m3forums that's developing something that looks to be very promising - it's currently being tested now:

Nice, it does look promising and the price seems fair. I hope its $170 and not $200 but I like that the product is being developed specifically for Bimmers, so its function is probably the best.
I have several maintenance tasks that take priority over my tech updates, so it will be a few months at least until I get around to this upgrade.

Plans for the weekend include:
- Change engine oil & Filter
- Install Oil Pan Sensor
- Clean & Condition interior
- Clean & Rain-X windows
- Finish new maintenance tasks list
I am also hoping my GF will have some time to code my datalogs and provide a for more graphs for everyone's viewing pleasure. The difference in look of the new sensors compared to the old is a night and day difference! Hopefully going to have two more graphs, one of highway driving with speeds around 65-70mpg, and another highway but speeds 80-85mph. Now I Just need to find the hardware that came with the oil pan sensor, can't remember where I placed it, hmmm.

It's not that hard to fish the wires out of the trunk. there's only like 2 large ones (reverse lights) and like 2 small plugs (trunk handle/latch). You will spend probably more time taking off the rivets on the carpet if you don't have a rivet removal tool lol

Started my new job and have been really busy. I can tell i'm really going to like this job, even after just one week. Bonded with my Supervisor over BMWs as he now has a X5 named Brunnhilde lol.
Car has been running pretty good and is seeing 45 miles a day now. All was well until yesterday when this happened

Trying to figure out why these codes are present. I just replaced both pre-cat sensors and have had no SES light or troubles since. Mpgs are up to 24.6, which is the highest its been. My idle is still not perfectly still though, so I am wondering if a I have small vacuum leak somewhere and that is causes the sensors to get false readings? I don't know if this makes sense, but its what I think is happening. A few searches have yielded similar thoughts, but nothing exact.
When I did my CCV, I removed the manifold and used new gaskets when I rebuilt everything. However, these gaskets were non-oem, and I have heard of issues from this. Really hoping I don't have to take everything apart and replace, so open to any other ideas from the Mafia. Any one has some suggestions as to what it may be? Or do you think as I do and there may be a small vacuum leak?
I love love love this car, but I hate how the check engine light seems to come on every 300 miles or so :(

I've had no luck with chasing down vacuum leaks. Perhaps it's time for another smoke test?

I keep the little siphon pump right in the trunk now lol

Damn, been really busy with work and havent had much time for my car. however, the Fiesta ST, FiST, has gotten 4 new tires and I have new pads and rotors for all 4 corners coming. Anyone familiar with the PowerStop brand? Pretty cheap parts considering. I went with a kit of theirs for shitz and gigglez. If the components are good, then i got one hell of a deal and if the components suck, i'm out less than $300 for all 4 corners. I don't have high expectations, but they will be better than the cheap autozone rotors my GF was about to buy.
As for the ZHP, I will be rebuilding my shifter soon, and will be installing new M3 Trans mounts, and possibly Guibo while i'm at it. Most likely will be next weekend since ill be doing brakes this weekend.

Aren't they like the autozone brand? You should try to check out R1concepts if they are still around. They sell Centric (parent company of Stoptech) brake parts for pretty cheap. At least I remember them being pretty cheap, and I could do local pick up. They used to give a cash discount which helps too.

I was looking at centric options on tire rack and they are pretty affordable. The centric cryo treated rotors with stoptech street pads was only $80 more, so I am going to convince my GF to go this route. I think it will be well worth the extra cash to get something a little more reputable. But its her car, so lets see what she says. If not, at least someone here can make an honest review about the cheapo brakes. My GF doesnt use her car that much anymore. It probs sees around 5k miles a year at the moment, but its still a FiST and I want it to be capable when we do drive it
