My day started this morning with the car not starting and having to push it out to the street so I could take my wife's car to work. When I got home I found the fuel pump was bad as I expected. The Autozone near me had a new Delphi fuel pump that turned out to be a VDO like the original. The car is running now but I have a check fuel cap light. I guess this means I have an air leak at the fuel pump. Does anyone have any advice?

Check your fuel cap and make sure it's tight...
Reset light, see if it comes back.

Sorry, I have no advise about the light. But how much did you pay for the FP ?

:rofl... that's what I was going to say.

Could check and make sure the pump is seated and tightened down properly/evenly. I'd basically take it out and put it back together with that in mind.

I don't know how it couldn't be on tight with that metal ring. But perhaps the gasket isn't seated correctly.

My thought was that the gasket was not seated too. I drove it to work today and the light went out on the way. When I came home the light was on again but went out during the trip. After I got home I tried taking of the gas cap and putting it back on which did not trip the gas cap light. There was a code for emissions leak in the computer which I cleared. I loosened the nut and tried to reseat it again yesterday. At this point if the light stays out I'm done, if it comes back on I will have to take the pump out and see whats up with the gasket. Thanks for everyone's help! Someone asked what the pump cost. It was $259.99. I was happy that it was local and I could get it back on the road. I am sure it is possible to get a better price but I was in a hurry.

When I replaced my fuel pump as a PM the hardest part was getting the gasket to seat correctly. I ended up applying silicone lubricant to it and that did the trick.

Right now I don't have a gas cap light. If it shows up again I will definitely use your suggestion.

Question for you... Would you ever hear a noisy winding coming from the pump on start up after the car had a chance to sit a bit. Mine as become more prevalent(winds on every startup, for about 20sec) after the car is off long enough...

My car had the pump run for a bit when I put the system back together. I don't notice it on a normal day. Once the pump builds up pressure the noise stops and in my case that does not take long. Maybe a couple seconds at most.

I ended up finding the culprit of the noise I was looking for.... Aging bearing in the secondary air pump. No fuel pump issues..
