Hey guys
so some of you might remember I bought my Neglected zhp off craigslist for next to nothing last May for next to nothing ( 3000$ ).
(then)
http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e73/we_poboys/IMG_20150523_122613_zpszljd1fte.jpeg (http://s37.photobucket.com/user/we_poboys/media/IMG_20150523_122613_zpszljd1fte.jpeg.html)
It had a few cosmetic issues but the most predominate issue was a seriously annoying lifter tick that plagued me from day one.
(now)
http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e73/we_poboys/20160312_182924_zps8epmq8lh.jpg (http://s37.photobucket.com/user/we_poboys/media/20160312_182924_zps8epmq8lh.jpg.html)

I tried everything from Best-line oil additive to sea-foam you name it. Nothing seemed to do the trick, finally I decided it was time to check the oil pan when it dawned on me to check compression... and there it was cylinder 6 was dying... ( SLOWLY ).

Then I went out of town for a week and left her sitting at the airport only for this to start to happening.
http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e73/we_poboys/20160521_115722_zpst4y9qbgg.jpeg (http://s37.photobucket.com/user/we_poboys/media/20160521_115722_zpst4y9qbgg.jpeg.html)

before this no overheating or anything but the occasional monthly coolant fill up. (till this day still no overheating) So instead of paying through the nose to do a head gasket job I decided to locate a lower mileage donor :). after about 24hr of searching I remembered I knew a guy locally that had a t boned ZHP sitting in his garage. He had been slowly parting it out and was very stingy with his pricing :foottap.. after about 48 of negotiating I was able to a 70k engine and (Auto) trans for 1300$ flat :fistpump

The engine is being installed by a long time friend of mine at a old school Bmw shop. Ill be dropping the zhp off next Monday or Tuesday so Im trying to pull together a list of things to Freshen up on the new motor before it goes it. I welcome all suggestions Gens.. Cheers!

Interesting. I'm no expert but I look forward to seeing what people say should be done before the engine goes in. Are you transferring over your manual transmission to the donor motor, or are you keeping its AT?

I plan on keeping it auto for now. I cant say I dont enjoy the comfort of the auto for daily communicating.. I still have my m3 for rowing through the gears

Here is the list I have ordered as of now.
*oil filter housing gasket
*Rear main Seal
*Oil Pan Gasket
*Motor Mounts (transmission mounts are new)

Water from the exhaust isn't strange. Catalytic converters doing their job. That does look like a good bit of water though.

Maybe do the VANOS while it's out? Seems like it'd be a little easier with better access.

Good luck!

+ maybe CCV?
Yes!

Now that I think about it. Since the engine will be out, it's a perfect time to do the CCV oil lines and all the plastic coolant pipes/hard to reach rubber coolant lines as well.

I have a set of the coolant pieces if you're interested. :)

MY car has some serious lifter tick going on, has a lot of moisture coming out of the exhaust pipes, and I just pulled the spark plugs to find it a little wet looking with an oily residue around the base of where the spark plugs threads into the block....

My symptoms seem a lot like yours. How long did you run the car with the serious lifter tick going on

Yea that does look pretty familiar actually. The car ran just fine with the lifter tick.. Honestly I drove the car for 25k miles with the tick lol.
but the wetness on the spark plug is concerning have you done a compression check? the compression check ultimately ended up making the decision for me to start to fine a new engine honestly.

As far as the lifter tick...i never mentioned that after I got the old motor pulled out I went to pull the ZHP cams and guess what?.... the bolts on cam trays over 4-5-6 were hand loose.....:facepalm. You might want to check that too :fingerscrossed

So I am pretty certain my issue was that the car had sat for awhile without running and that I need to replace my VCG. I spotted an area where it appears to be leaking by one of the bolts near the back of the motor on the exhaust side. The lifter tick has kind of settled, but the VANOS rattle is so much more noticeable, especially driving with no hood on.

Thanks for letting me know about the paint. I am going to redo my front bumper and see how it comes out. I'll have some pics in my build thread soon here. I think I should be able to make it look mostly decent. Any tips?
