Hello Mafia Family, and welcome to my very first project thread.

I'm hoping to not impose this thread on a wonderful forum, which I have had the pleasure of being a part of for 5 whole years now! MAN, it feels like I just drove my ZHP off the lot yesterday... What an incredible feeling that was being behind the wheel of my very first, LONG desired 'Ultimate Driving Machine'. Ever since I can remember, I have loved cars. More importantly, loved German cars. When the time came to purchase my first car, fresh out of high school in 2009, I took my hard earned money and went off to buy what I felt was obtainable, and ideal for me at the time. It was a beautiful 04 VW Jetta GLI, adorned in the fiery hot Tornado Red. I truly loved that little 1.8T with a passion, however, it only deepened my desire for what I knew I truly had to have, a BMW. Coming from a family with a long history of classic BMW's, and being the Bimmer enthusiast that I was, I knew I had to do what only felt right. When the time came, and circumstances were aligned, I pulled on what I knew would be the best car that I have ever owned. It was only my second car... “How would you know this”, you say?... Well, my ZHP was, and to this day is one of the most beautiful pieces of art and mechanical fusion that I have set eyes on. I love everything about these cars, and I'm positive that most of you can relate.

Being a lover of all things German, how could Porsche, the epitome of German engineering not be at the top of my List of Longing?? A car manufacture, which even generations of geniuses at BMW pay homage to?? Well that's just it; I have always been in a romance with Porsche, ever since I laid eyes on a 911 when I was just a youngster. Nowhere can you find a more perfected, continuously refined, all in all GORGEOUS piece of machinery. Porsche has had the ability to keep the 911 the same shape for over 50 years, that is something that no other make/model of car has accomplished, and one of the many reasons why I love them so much. I knew I had to have one someday, and I knew I would. I had no clue what year, or color, or engine, or even when I would be able to afford one... I just KNEW I had to have a 911...

This brings me to the point of this thread, guys (apologies for the rant). Just last week, I was fortunate enough to come across the most incredible opportunity one could have imagined. The stars were truly aligned with this one... I finally had the opportunity to buy my very first 911...

It is a 1979, 911 SC (Super Carrera). Sitting on the rear axle is a horizontally opposed, 3.0 liter flat-6 engine. With 180hp, 195 lb·ft, and its 2,557lb curb weight; this little guy has torque readily available throughout the power band. Its 'painted' a gorgeous (when new), ‘Petrol Blue Metallic’, and has the awesome ‘Cork’ leather interior option.

The car has 90k on the odometer, and is in surprisingly good shape, despite having sat outside for 3 years without being started. I am currently in the process of going through the whole car, and doing all the necessary inspections before I go to fire it up and take it home. Luckily I know the P/O, and he's allowing me to keep the car there, to do what needs to be done before getting it on the road. Then it will be going to my good friend's home garage for the rest of the restoration process (while driving it, of course). The only body rust is a small patch on the front left 'wing', and a bit around the edge of the trunk, which will all be taken care of by me. These cars have a notorious issue with the windshield liner shrinking, which naturally, creates leaks. So over the past three years of sitting open to the elements, it had developed a rusted pedal cluster from said leak. They will not even move. I have a new cluster on order from a Porsche dismantling shop out in CA. This is number one on my list of to-do's to get this car back up to speed. I plan on doing everything to this car myself. With my previously gained mechanical knowledge, extreme dedication and love, and this beautiful Bentley Shop Manual that just came in the mail, I plan to tackle what's needed to get my 911 exactly where I want it. I even plan to test my skill at painting. If it doesn't come out how I want, I'll do it again...and again.

This Porsche will represent me as a car enthusiast, and I invite you to join me on that journey...
The 911sc is my little slice of Heaven... After all, it is ‘The Car I've Always Wanted’...

See what I mean! They are all so beautiful, makes it too hard to choose. A 997 gt3RS is my dream car, the 4.0 is a fantasy... That's right up there with a 964 Carrera RS NGT, and a 993 GT2 :drool

Got to wrench a bit today after work. I finally got that S.O.A.B rusted pedal cluster off! Two of the studs, which the pedal bracket bolt to, that are welded to the floor pan snapped right off like butter.... So i'll have to drill those out after grinding all that rust down, and go the route of bolting it down to the floor board. No biggie.

Here's that bastard.

Along with the new gas, there has to be a new filter, and visually inspecting the pump. Might not get to that until this week. I didn't realize how much gasoline can break down over the years.

That is definitely in the plans for this car. How soon I get to that, I really don't know. Right now I just want to drive it haha. The fuel delivery/and or spark issue will be addressed this week, we have some good weather coming finally..

Seeing as I know I'll always have this car, it'll probably be pretty deep... I mean how could I not. The 911sc is the last air-cooled 911 to buy that's not outrageously expensive, and even the SC is on its way up now too. It's unbelievable how much some of these cars are going for...

•Fuel Hoses/Lines/Restrictors
•Fuel Filter
•Fuel Accumulator
•Fuel Pump
•Spark Plugs

Now lets hope nothing is wrong with the Fuel Distributer or the Warm Up Regulator....

There are some good threads on rebuilding the WUR and fuel distributor (or at least cleaning them out). You're most likely fine. I would plan to remove the entire CIS system and replace the intake manifold gaskets, rubber intake manifold boots, vacuum lines, and fuel injector insulator blocks (I have the parts to do this to mine and I'll get to it in a few weeks once I fix the wiring).

Does your car have a popoff valve? If so, make sure that it seals correctly. Do you have pressure fed chain tensioners?

Well that's good to know. If it did end up being either of the two, my first attempt would be to try and clean them out myself anyway.. I have a lot of maintenance plans for the car, which I am currently trying to prioritize. CIS system is most definitely on that list, seeing as once they are rebuilt, and maintained (aka not sitting stagnant for three years), they are supposed to be bulletproof..... By 'insulator blocks', do you mean the rubber seals?

The car does in fact have the Pop Off Valve, on a brand new Air Filter Housing, which is good... As far chain tensioners go, it does have the Sealed Hydraulic Tensioner, as it is a 79. Only in 1983(last year of the SC), did they switch to the (external of the crank case) Oil Fed Tensioner, which is more reliable...

Why do you ask, and what model do you have??? Also, thanks for the input!

There is actually a plastic sleeve that the injector slides into. I ordered new ones along with the o-rings because they tend to get brittle over time and might break when you remove the injector to replace the o-ring. There is a screen inside the injectors that makes them difficult to clean. A few people have backflushed them with compressed air and carb cleaner and have gotten a lot of crap out. I'll be doing that soon.

I have a 1982 so mine has the normal tensioners as well. It's pretty common to retrofit the pressure-fed Carrera tensioners on the older motors and a lot of people will say that it's a necessity or that cars with pressure-fed tensioners are more desirable. I don't plan to do it to mine as the cost has increased dramatically over the last few years (even used kits are $600 on a good day). I'll just get locking safety collars for my tensioners and call it a day.

I'm just curious what your plan of attack is because my car also needs a TON of work to be happy. Mine was a "track" car so it is stripped out with fiberglass bumpers and a duck tail...and I mean STRIPPED out (no handbrake, no door locks, a bunch of stupid shit). I'm just trying to make it right. My CIS was "simplified" so the O2 sensor is gone and I am in the process of trying to figure out what CIS components are actually still hooked up.

Nice, SC buddies. That's cool man! I mean, this car is going to be a bit of a learning curve for me, as I am new to Porsches systems (Mechanical knowledge). First thing for me right now, is to address these issues to get it started, and drivable, having sat for three years, I know that there is a potential for some surprises, but it's nothing that's going to deter me. So I'm going to work it as it comes. I know I'll most likely have this thing for a very long time, if not forever. That being said, it's not a project that I plan to rush. I am extremely picky with my vehicles and I like to take my time, or else I'll get too anxious haha.

Seeing as it was a track car (I would assume it was tracked avidly being that its gutted to that extent), you have a good chance of it being pretty damn sound mechanically. So long as it was an enthusiast that took the racing very seriously. Yes track cars get beat on, but that means that things get taken care of almost immediately, and the upkeep on a track car is seriously necessary to keep it running well for racing.

I want the RS style fiberglass bumpers and Ducktail as well!!! Those are prb last on the list, they'll come with a paint job. Jet Black with chrome window trim, and chrome/two tone RS style Fuchs...:drool

Lets see pics!!!

I wish mine was really well maintained as you'd expect a track car to be. It wasn't maintained nearly to my standards...but it's okay I'll clean it up. I definitely paid to much for it but it was an emotional choice.

That is surprisingly clean! A tip on the seats: I picked up a steamer on Amazon (made by Wagner) to strip wallpaper in my house. I just found out that it also works extremely well at cleaning leather. If you have access to one, give it a try. Wrap the head of the steamer in a microfiber, soak the seats in leather cleaner, and scrub while dispensing the steam.

Coffee beans just masks the mold smell John. If there's actual mold in there you want to "clean" it out completely and not have it in there. Not everyone can deal with mold.

Smell yes but not the spores the mold puts out. People aren't allergic to the smell but they can be allergic to spores so using a good mold cleaner will kill any mold (causing the smell) and help get rid of any spores.

I'll tell you what though, Gents... I'm sure a combination of the both would do a stellar job.

It's little bits like this that I'll be doing until all the parts I'm waiting for from various vendors come in. You would be surprised how some of this stuff can be very tricky to find. Some of it they don't even make anymore, and you have to source... All part of the fun of the project though!

Today was the hallmark in my very young project. I spent the past couple weeks really getting into the car trying to narrow down why it wouldn't start up.

I quickly found out that I wasnt getting any fuel pressure to the injectors, then began working my way back, but starting with the least expensive repair, which was the fuel pump (thing was all caked up), and figured I'd do some other things along with it. They consisted of..

•Fuel Pump
•Fuel Filter
•Spark Plugs
•Fuel Neck Breather Hoses (destroyed by mouse pee)

The car fired right up!!! If you were a fly on the wall...LOL

So, for the gents who are interested... I have decided on a color for the SC. I will be getting it repainted in the future....UGH this color!!:wub

Against all Porsche Purists, I decided on a color that isn't what came on the car from Zuffenhausen.. Nor is it even a color from the Impact Bumper era either. Its a much newer, sexier, classier color... I have decided on MALICHITE GREEN METALLIC!! This color just makes me drool, personally. Its a color first offered in 07/08 on the 997 from what I understand.. Its a bit brighter than Racing Green Metallic, which I know someone on here has on his 997 Carrera. Its a color that is effected greatly by the type, and brightness of light shining on it. I was initially torn between a darker green or a silver when deciding, and once I saw this, I fell in love, it embodies BOTH!!

CHECK IT OUT!! Under various lighting...

Looks good, especially under the lights... Nice choice :thumbsup

Edit:
This is British racing green but it reminded me of this 911 R

Thanks man! And dude, the first time I saw the 911 R in that color, I died. Luckily I was able to get up close and personal with one at the NY Auto Show. As part of the PCA we got to enter the show 3 hours before the doors even opened up for the public for a demo and breakfast from Porsche America. All the cars were open, including the 911R (for a VERY brief amount of time). The thing was truly EPIC, the interior is perfection...

I've been to the Detroit auto show but not the NY one, they didn't have the 911 R unfortunately as it wasn't announced yet... But ya the 911 R is so damn cool, it's a shame they're so limited... And the ca in the pic I posted above apparently belongs to Porsche GT boss man Andreas Preuninger...

It looks like I'm late to the party, but congrats on the purchase, Cam!

If you need to bounce stuff off someone, I only recently sold my 1970 911 T (which I upgraded to S specs and added a 2.7RS motor) after 8 years of ownership and "restoration". I became pretty knowledgeable about these cars as I went through mine... but it's amazing how quickly you forget!

The SCs are great, bulletproof cars - but more along the lines of "durable" vs "reliable" as per Jack Baruth's recent Avoidable Contact article. The SC was actually my first exposure to driving 911 - and it blew me away when I found out that the speedo in my friends car was in MPH went I said that it was pretty slow to 100 ;)

The Malachite Green Metallic seems like a pretty interesting colour. I find that a lot of the upgrade colours from Porsche are very complex and can change greatly with light or angle. In some light, my PRG can look just like the MGM... but in other light it will look almost black. Most of the time it looks like a very metallic racing green, which is what it basically is. My previous "modern Porsche" was a 2001 Boxster - that car was Lapis Blue Metallic, which looked anywhere from dark blue to purple depending on the light. I really liked that colour too, I hunted that down with a Savannah Beige interior and Metropol Blue top!

You may want to also give consideration to PRG - in my personal opinion, as a slightly deeper colour it will go better with your deeper Cork interior; the MGM would work better with my Sand Beige interior which I find a little washed out for the deeper PRG.

Good luck with the reno, you'll have lots of fun... and the drive will be very, very rewarding!

That's great, so glad to have another knowledgeable person to ask questions if needed!

I do really like the PRG. Initially, my first choice for a green(which was more preferable than the silvers I was looking through), was Oak Green Metallic, which is a BEAUTIFUL dark green, and period correct. But once I saw MGM, It came rushing back, as I had seen it in person before and LOVED it. If I were to tell the truth, Oak Green Metallic is still on the back-burner...

Sounds like you have a nice history with Porsche! Funny enough, there is a gent in town with a first gen Boxster, in the exact some color combo, top and all, I kid you not, and it is MINTY. Thanks for the advise and the kind words!

Also a great color! I've just always love darker/sportier greens, Fredo. On a car that means business, it just carries a lot of classiness IMO. As I have stated recently in the sales thread for that slick-top, Oxford Green/Natural Brown ZHP that ever so gracefully slipped through my fingers...

Here is the Oak Green Metallic... Side note, this is almost the exact look I'm going for on my SC... RSR style Fuchs wheels, Ducktail, Euro headlight swap... Initially I wanted to go Fiber Glass RS style smooth bumpers, but now I'm thinking I may keep the impact bumpers (replace all the rubbers, as well as swap those nasty, fat US impact bumpers on the back to the slim Euro style).

That's going to look fantastic. The impact bumpers have really grown on me since I've purchased my car. I have the fiberglass IROC bumpers but can really appreciate a clean impact bumper car. There are some threads on Pelican about subtly tucking the bumpers in a bit that really cleans up the look. You might want to check it out! Also consider installing the front bumper/hood gasket from a 964. You can search for "964 bumper smile" for more information. It's much slimmer and more clean looking than the 2.7/SC/Carerra gasket.

I can't wait to paint mine but I know it will cost 5k+ for a really good job so it will have to wait for now. The green is a great choice.

One of the issues with all of these 911s is the increasing value.

Values for unrestored, clean pre-1973 cars have gone Ferrari-crazy; and the values for solid non-numbers-matching but well-restored cars have also skyrocketed. For me, it would not have made sense to have a $5K paint job done; to get the most bang-for-my buck I would have to have done a $20K body resto, which would have likely added more than that to the current value and even more to the future if trends continue (note that I had VERY little rust for an early car, but it's always there somewhere in the pre-galvanized machines). That was a big factor in my decision to pass it along to the next caretaker.

Although SCs haven't hit this point yet, it is conceivable that they could become "investment grade" in the next few years, in which case you may be kicking yourself about taking the economical way out on any repair/resto. Just a thought.

One hundred percent agreed!

This is the driving force with my 951. I want to mod the shit out of it, but since the values of these with low miles are skyrocketing. Currently these cars are worth 30k in Excellent condition. And the Air Cooled 911s are always going to increase.

But it's your car and you should do with it what you want!
