Wut?

Haa well Easter is our biggest holiday and technically you are not supposed to do any type of work really. So it is considered nono to work on your car, do construction, anything like that...we dont go all out with it, but to an extent

Greece basically shuts down and people just relax til Sunday... :biggrin

Copy. Good stuff Stathi...I did not know that. I would tell people working on my car was kind of like wiping my ass. Something that isn't a "want" but a "need"...kind of like air.

yep, it sheared the bolts that attach it to the firewall and the pedal bent and so did the master cylinder, now it doesn't work. Very uncommon weird problems I seem to have, goes with putting a monster clutch in the car I think :)

$350 installed for BMW glass?

Actually that quote was for non-BMW glass. I asked the insurance to "approve" BMW glass and they are getting back to me with either an approval or a price differential. My deductible is too high so I have to pay for this myself, but they are arranging discount of some sorts. John

My last windshield was replaced for about $520 (about 4 years ago). BMW glass. Got it through Safelite. The dealer wanted $800 for the same glass.

I would like to replace my windshield someday just because of the pitting but I'd hate to end up with issues.....leaks or problems with the rain sensor. It's really only noticeable when driving into the sun though so I've almost been HOPING to get a rock chip/crack so I'd have to get it done. The factory glass really isn't all that expensive....$225 at Lincoln BMW but I'm sure the shipping wouldn't be cheap.

It should be the last #1 here....

I actually had BMW glass and Safelite glass. They both cracked. Almost identical circumstances (small rocks hitting the windshield). I found both of them to be soft.

Because of my circumstances, I was unable to tell the difference between the two.

Dane, what are the biggest differences between them?

By the way, the glass I got from Safelite had a BMW logo on it. I had rain sensors on my car.

Is the glass they use not BMW glass? As I recall, I asked them to use BMW glass.

Standards-wise, both types meet requirements. I was curious as I saw a post on e46f.c where the guy said his seal looked different when he replace his. BTW, they also asked if I had the "solar" glass but I could not see anywhere that I had that... any thoughts on that? John

I really don't know the difference.

My BMW dealer told me to go through Safelite, but to make sure I asked for BMW glass (since I was leasing the car and BMW NA would not accept anything less). I got the BMW glass (with the logo on it) for $520 installed.

It seems to me that the Pilkington glass is tougher, and more resistent to rock chips. I had both on the TiAg.....but when the Pilkington glass got cracked in a car wash...I had it replaced withe the cheaper glass. Seemed like only months later...it looked worse than the oem windshield from small rock chips.

I've had my glass replaced in my E30 and can offer up the following advice: use BMW glass.
The glass I received was aftermarket. The whole reason I replaced it was because it was pitted beyond the point of seeing properly with the sun shining in your direction. It was a real safety hazard, so they replaced the glass with non BMW glass. A year later, it was just as pitted as the 21-year-old glass it replaced. I paid nearly $300 out of pocket for it, and making a little more than minimum wage at the time, I was pissed.

I firmly believe that the BMW glass is much more durable and would be worth the price difference, which shouldn't be all that much.

My wife HATES spiders. When we were first together, there was a spider in her room and she begged me to kill it. She had that awesome panic attack look on her face.

Sooooo, being the comic that I am, I trapped it with my hands and let it crawl up my arm. She screamed like she was being stabbed to death, and then proceeded to dry heave.

I nearly wet my pants laughing.

And now you can see why she fell in love with me. :innocent

Installed a e46 M3 26mm front sway bar. (up from 24mm)

Turn in response has increased considerably although I might have added slightly more under-steer at the limit but around town it is indeed nice!

I'll be installing an e46 convertible 20mm sway bar in the rear to really balance the car out. Once I install my H&R cup kit i'll tinker around with the sway bars until I get a neutral or predictable over-steering handling. :) Then once i'm happy with the results; In go adjustable end-links and bye bye pre-load.

I'll be purchasing these front endlinks

http://img14.imageshack.us/img14/332/linksu.png (http://img14.imageshack.us/i/linksu.png/)

http://www.velocitymotorcars.com/adjustable-swaybar-end-links-e46-exc.-xi-series-e85-e86.html

Notice how you can choose the length to suite your cars' stance. Very nice!

This can arguably be done on ZHP's as well since ZHP's share the same sway bars as non ZHP cars.

I was forced to clean my ICV, DISA and Throttle Body today thanks to a P1510: Stuck ICV. It was literally glued shut with gunk. I carefully employed a butter knife to nudge it back open after a liberal dosing of Throttle Body Cleaner. It moves freely when I rotate it; Something I didn't know when I cleaned it last November! Throttle body was pretty clean and DISA checked out okay. Unfortunately, I'm unaware which model of M54B30 DISA I have. Sometime between 2003 and 2004 there was an update to the design, but for now everything is in working order :biggrin Now back to studying :(

Nope. Thought it needed resistance much like the DISA. I have an extra and it didn't move either. The only way I realized they should move freely was by comparing the two. The spare was slightly open, the one on the car was shut completely. But I learned something new today LOL

Sweet.......and good lookin out by comparing. Yeah....you should hold it in your handle like a throttle on a motorcycle, then rotate your wrist. You should hear it clicky back and forth.....

Had to have the car towed to my mechanic today because it was having starting issues. Since winter it's been chugging and shaking occasionally when starting and sometimes throws a code (misfire) and usually clears itself up then runs normal a few seconds after. (Still in the blue)
Today it was the worst it's ever been. Shook very violently and CEL on now. It was 53° outside and even got close to closed loop and was still chugging so I called a flatbed. Lol

Driving home today.....I was behind a white truck.......who was behind a logging truck. See where this is going? So....logging truck start to dump debris off his truck....and ends up shedding a "knot" outta one of the insides of the tree. I saw the debris start to fly.....nowhere to go.....locked in doing 65mph......I grip the steering wheel tight.....oh boy here it comes........white truck goes right over it.......then......I came along......Boom.

Exterior inspection revealed cracked bumper (underneath), and a busted passenger side fog (The one I replaced only months ago).

I have not inspected the underneath......but will do so here in a little. Pics to follow.....in typical tease fashion.

LMAO! I like that. We should have a surprise attack. Tell you what, work is sending me to Charleston, finishing up June 9. So, I could arrange a trip from there to VA, then back home over the weekend... thus completely surprising him, catching him off guard, and ensuring things are going well. I'd be up for that. John

I don't believe the two are related. I have been meaning to change the fluid, and change the #9 bushing...this is forcing my hand :( All that is needed is new gear oil and some RTV sealant as BMW no longer offers a differential gasket.

So...I got back from dinner with the family, and decided to see if I could tighten the diff bolts down any to stop the leak...Well boy I'm surprised that I could even drive the vehicle! Got my 16mm socket and could actually tighten down by hand! :eyetwitch So I cleaned all the gear oil and the road grime off the bolts and the bottom of the differential with a rag and tightened down THREE bolts! I didn't have the torque specs handy but I just tightened them down and then a 1/8 turn to the right.

So my recommendation to you is to check your diff cover bolts for leaks as the temperature has changed. I'm going for a fluid change tomorrow...should be fun :)

Thanks Keith! Unfortunately none of those torque values are applicable. I checked TIS...M10 8.8 threaded bolts need to be tightened to 45Nm, M10 10.9 threaded bolts need to be tightened to 55Nm. I'm not exactly sure which bolts are which as both apply to the 188K differential housing found in M52TU and M54 E46 BMWs with manual transmissions*. So I will check them tomorrow when I change the fluid. Gonna go ahead and do the transmission fluid as well.

*Automatic e46s differentials are allocated with 168K differential housings and use the same values as the manual transmissions.

Stathi, did you check the wiring within the panel that the bulb sets into? I was getting "bulb out" messages all the time, so I'd check my taillights and all the filaments were good. So I'd wiggle them around a bit and they'd light back up and I'd be on my way. It wasn't until I asked Luke about it in the shop that he pointed out the grounding/over-heating issue:

"Tail lamp wiring faults. The updated E46 sedan (from 9/01 to 3/05 production) wiring harness has a design defect with grounding wires for the rear lighting that are too small and are made of poor quality materials, thus leading to wiring harness failure due to overheating. As stated in BMW's TSB, "Customers may complain that one of the rear lights is inoperative. CAUSE: Minor corrosion at the 8-pin rear lamp connector creates high resistance causing damage to the connector housing. CORRECTION: Repair the damaged wire(s) and replace damaged connector housing. Install additional ground wires to both left and right rear lamps." This can be easily confirmed by careful examination of the rear lamp wiring connectors which are usually melted. Symptoms include a "burned out bulb" warning in the instrument panel and (intermittently) completely inoperative rear lamp cluster(s). While BMW has a TSB for this problem, many have occurred out of warranty leading to arguments with the dealer (automotive lighting standards are Federally legislated, yet BMW refuses to repair this design defect once the cars are out of warranty). BMW dealers expect $350-$400, or more, PER SIDE to make the tail lamps work. As a result, check for a NHTSA recall (or a class-action lawsuit against BMW) before you pay for repairs. There are many threads on this problem; see the BMW TIS (search for SIB 63 03 06 if the attached link is inop)here. This problem was not limited to US market as you can read here. Cheaper DIY repairs can also be found on a variety of web forums, although your results may vary"

Mine were FRIED dude... the driver's side was just melted.
So I had him install new bulb panels on both sidses.
I would be willing to bet this is what is going on with your car right now, too...

I think you can just buy the panels (Like $50 or 60/side) and do it yourself. If you've ever installed a car stereo, you could probably jimmy-rig this thing together... ;-)

When I bought my car, the P.O. applied the "fix" for me on the spot before I drove off with the car. If it's not too late for you, you could just solder in the extra grounds and call it a day.

If you'd like, I can take pics of what/where to solder.

I have had a couple coupes and now have a sedan and it so much easier to take care of the rear window/interior, and putting stuff/peeps back there is mush easier and less scuffing occurs.

Nice heiny!

I went to pick up ZHP from the body shop....but it wasn't quite finished up yet. Glad I stopped by as there were a few things that were unacceptable. I don't know if they were "done".

So....I pointed out the things I thought needed fixed, and told them I wanted the entire car PC'd and waxed. No extra charge. I'm sure it won't be perfect...but it will be better.

I told them to take their time, and I would be back at 0800.

Aside from the small imperfections (One area on rear bumper, and a couple of fish eye's on the hood)....the car looked like wet, Imola Jolly Rancher goodness. I couldn't believe how wet it looked. Like the 2M pics. I am so stoked.

I am not going to want to drive it.

What a fecking afternoon.

I drove to Manhattan today, knowing full and well that I was going to sit in traffic to some degree on the way back. I cannot describe to you all how much I hate sitting in traffic. I believe that traffic would immediately be remedied by everyone just hitting the freaking gas pedal and not being pansies about it. But anyway...

I parked the car and went to my doctor's appointment for my 2-week lasik checkup. I come back and finding a parking ticket under my wiper. WTF?
Here are some of the pics I took of the signage:

http://i200.photobucket.com/albums/aa192/az3579/Misc/2011-06-03_16-00-07_474.jpg

Reading this sign, this is what I gather (note the DIFFERENCE between the words parking and standing, which are two different things):
* No standing for anyone except commercial vehicles Mon-Fri 7am-6pm, and that there's metered parking for commercial vehicles
* 6-pm - Midnight - metered parking 6 hour limit (note the absense of a clarification of whether it's for commercial or non-commercial)
* 8am - Midnight metered parking on Saturday, once again, does not specify whether it's for commercial or non-commercial

Nowhere does it mention what the rules are for parking of non-commercial vehicles Mon-Fri 7am-6pm. Normally one would take the safe road and assume they can't park there, but then there is this notice on the meter:

http://i200.photobucket.com/albums/aa192/az3579/Misc/2011-06-03_15-57-16_125.jpg

The ONLY thing this could possibly register as in my mind is that non-commercial vehicles don't have to pay until 6pm. It doesn't say non-commercial vehicles can't park until 6pm, just that they shouldn't pay until then. I had a guy on the street look at the sign as well when he saw that I got a ticket and he agreed as well that it makes it seem like non-commercial vehicles can park there without having to pay until 6pm. Non-commercial vehicles certainly are allowed to park there, as the meter itself has a separate price right on it for commercial and non-commercial vehicles. Once again, WTF?

So I start my journey back and get no more than 5 miles away from my "starting" point in about half an hour. I sit through traffic waiting to get on the highway. After nearly breaking my car on the pothole at the onramp, I approach the toll booth ($6.50 by the way), and once I'm stopped in the EZPass lane wondering why the damned gate wasn't opening, I realized that my EZPass was still in my friend's car, and I had no cash on me whatsoever. Officer gives me the deferred payment envelope and I get past the toll, punching in the location of the nearest bank. The damned thing led me back to where I came from as that's where the nearest bank was, meaning I had to sit through the same 30-minute traffic AND pay the toll AGAIN to get to where I needed to go.

On the highway at last, and have about 2 miles of clear traffic, and then bam - I'm sitting in it. This goes on for at least another 30 minutes (at which point I'm still well within the city boundaries) and finally get some clear road, at which point I gun it so I could kill every last second possible. I get lit up by a trooper for going 77mph. At this point I'm sitting there rolling my eyes thinking "could this day get any worse?". For some odd reason, he decided not to give me a ticket (I was courteous to him as he deserved), to which I was thankful for, and proceeded on my way, hitting traffic about 5 miles later and sitting in stop and go allllll the way home (about an hour's worth).

kayger12
06-03-2011, 05:04 PM
If you are parking, you are standing-- but you can be standing without parking.

Because your car was parked there, your car was standing there-- in violation of the No Standing 7a-6p rule, hence the ticket.

In NYC, No Standing means you are not allowed to park. You are also not allowed to stop unless you are dropping off or picking up passengers that are present at the location.

Parking in NYC is a science...
