haha. maybe i'll finish the Touring and sell it to you! :)

i go back and forth daily on whether to keep the sedan or the Touring. they each have their own attributes that i like. i need to wait until i finish the Touring to decide. it's going to be tough.

Hi Peter. Just keep me in mind when you think about selling lol I love this car.

Semi-related: for some reason it's always bugged me how M3 mirrors don't have black trim-matched bases like ours do.

yeah, it's bad A, huh?

i agree about the mirrors, it looks cleaner with the gloss black bases. it blends into the door/trim better.

Stuart's is a heavily modified 325/330, not a full blown M3 conversion like the one Peter posted...
Very different animals with different characteristics.

Personally, I'd pick Stuart's, but that's because I've seen it in the flesh and already know how awesome it is. :biggrin

LOL. kazakhstan.

i grabbed a bunch of pics. it's very nicely done, and yes, imolarot just works on it really well.

Stu has already done it ;)

yep, i know! :) but it's very different than an 'OEM' M3 conversion...

i like stuart's car but it's just way too low for me. i like the M3 look because it looks OEM, and the ride height suits me a lot better. what i don't like is the massive surgery required to the front fenders to make the M3 units fit the sedan.

i'm considering molding in a set of hard motorsports' rivet-on flares.

I prefer the aesthetics of this one. I think the Mtech2 bumper looks *much* better than the M3 bumper.

i like the MTechII bumper better, but i like the whole M3 front end look with the fenders - it's just cleaner looking to me, since the M3 bumper is already the correct width.

if i do mold in the rivet-on flares, i might do the OEM M3 front bumper just to get the width right. i dunno.

the Touring body just looks RIGHT with the flares....

yeah, i hate the side grilles. they would go for sure!

I know Stu's car isn't an M3, But he has done an excellent job of putting M3 flares on his wagon, which I think, is the most important part when going for that look

That car is an absolute blast. Plus it is on air suspension so it rides higher up most of the time. I see it posted over and over again on soo many different forums and groups. Always cool to think that I know the owner each time when these strangers are freaking out about it.

If there was an easy way to put m3 rear fenders on non m, my car would already done. In my case it's too allow for bigger tires as the LS3 overwhelm my 200 tread wear tire very easily . (I'm running 255).

Peter if you find someone that can do this not too expensively, he has 2 clients. (I would do m3 front conversion at the same time)

hard motorsport makes M3 flares for both sedans and coupes now! those look like the best option. rivet-on, or mold-in. i like the mold-in option, and i am going to talk to my local paint guy about it. :)

I used my last clean bit the other week, and now it's only all fit for wheel duty. I really want to try the Nanoskin clay alternative, but ~$50 for clay is turning me away. Gotta get something before I work on Nate's Imola coupe, though.

I have a nanoskin and did a side by side comparison, nanoskin worked better and is more user friendly. Not sure what costs $50. I got a nanoskin for under 10 off Amazon and use water/quick detailer. Water was easier for me with clay
Only downside is it's not as easy to get in the little crevices and curves

repaired a non-op rear wiper on the Touring last night. wiper movement on the shaft was basically crazy stiff, and the motor has a shut-down feature if the resistance is too high - very nice (avoids burning out the motor).

i disassembled the rear wiper shaft assembly, cleaned up lots of rust/dirt/debris and wire-wheeled the wiper shaft. then lubed with PFTE lube and re-assembled. working as good as it could possibly work now, aside from replacing the entire assembly with new parts. :)

Is it just surface rust or actually it penetrated the panel and will require new metal?

it's actually pretty bubbly and has one small perforation (which is weird because the rest of the car is amazingly rust-free!). i've got metal i can use for it, and my paint guy has done a bunch of these before (i've seen another E46 that he did). it will get POR15'd before final paint.

it's actually pretty bubbly and has one small perforation (which is weird because the rest of the car is amazingly rust-free!). i've got metal i can use for it, and my paint guy has done a bunch of these before (i've seen another E46 that he did). it will get POR15'd before final paint.

Gotcha.

I like the concepts front fascia more but the rear end I think I prefer the new one. Also the concept seems much shorter but not sure if it's actually the case.

I recently saw a Porsche Cayanne turbo sell for $14.5k, so maybe in 10 years, who knows [emoji6] but obviously maintenance will be a nightmare with all the electronics...

I did! I'm not a huge fan of the rear end, it looks like the designers sort of gave up at the rear window or something. Sadly I don't think they're making it in a manual and that $96k price tag is a joke.

They did what? And gave them all to you silly Canadians? Who knew the Bavarians had jokes...albeit cruel ones.

And I know, your Touring is going to be magnificent. I think Europe got "Club sport" or some equivalent that had M-tech appearance. I saw a BMW touring with an M-Tech II kit in a small town in Italy back last May.

yeah, in europe you could get the 'M Sport' model which basically was the same as the 'M Sport' model you could buy in canada - the aesthetic package of a ZHP, minus the cams/3.07 rear end/exhaust. very neat cars, and you could get the M Sport package on anything from a 330 to a 318d, coupe/sedan/Touring. so they are way more common over there.

UPDATE:

well... big decision time is here.

i've decided to use my ZHP as a donor for my Touring. it was really hard decision. i love the sedan and have had it for 3 years this month... however a few things really pushed me over the edge.

Sedan CONS:

- the sedan rear floor has a crack in the normal spot (near the left rear subframe mount); and the RACP is separating from the frame rail/wheel well sheet metal. it's actually been doing this for a while but i didn't really understand what i was looking at. i riveted it back together in august, at vince's recommendation, and it seems to be holding fine - but still, i don't like it.
- since i filled the RACP, i can't weld the crack closed (fire hazard).
- it was in a minor front-end accident (not on the the carproof report), which i discovered after i bought it. the rad support is kinked a bit, and the hood is aftermarket and doesn't sit right. always bugged me.
- the sedan just ain't as practical as a Touring.

Touring PROS:

- 10/2004 build date, so it has the factory reinforcement piece (take that with a grain of salt) in the RACP. but it's gotta be good for something. also, the floor and LR arch area (where i have an issue with the sedan) is totally fine.
- undercarriage it actually crazy clean. way cleaner than my sedan.
- it's actually MS45.1, meaning the ZHP motor just drops right in. all i need to do is flash the DME with the ZHP software.
- extra utility is awesome and has already proven to be invaluable in our daily life (as the montero is out of commission more than i would like).
- super awesome for road trips - the rear cupholder is awesome and the extra space inside the cabin just makes it feel bigger and more 'airy'. definitely nice.
- one owner car, all records. no accidents.
- has all of the options i want from the factory.

so what is the scope of the project? well, i'll tell ya. the Touring gets:

- ZHP engine, trans, and MFactory 3.46 LSD rear end - everything i've spent tons of time on getting the way i wanted it on the ZHP - it will live on in the Touring and enjoyed the heck out of.
- ZHP steering rack from the ZHP
- 330i brakes
- bilstein PSS from the ZHP (i'm likely going to do a linear spring conversion) and all of the other suspension bits from the ZHP
- ZKW/TRS headlights from the ZHP
- Touring MTechII bumpers and side skirts
- black Touring headliner, pillars, black cube trim, M Sport sills, etc - it will look like a ZHP Touring with M Sport bits (M Sport dead pedal too)
- LCM (SW ver 4.5) from the ZHP with triple blink, etc
- manual-dip rearview mirror (dang i hate auto-dim)
- M3 front seats (already done ;))
- alcantara shift and handbrake boots
- half-perf leather M3 wheel and E90 M Sport shift knob from the ZHP
- apex ARC-8s from the ZHP
- gloss black BMW Performance grilles
- OEM euro clear/red taillights and OEM clear corner + sidemarker lights
- OEM rubber trunk mat
- USB charger for the rear seat :) (my kids are getting to this point now)
- BMW Performance exhaust!!
- valeo 6-speed SMF conversion kit

i'm aiming to have the entire project completed by june 1.

what does that mean for the ZHP? well, lots of parts that i won't be using have already been requested - even before i decided to do this project! kind of weird, but awesome. and lots of misc bits - like the radio, HVAC unit, misc clips, screws, etc - will just go into 'inventory.' :) most everything will be used or sold and will live on in other cars. i'm happy with that.

and the ZHP Touring will become a reality. :)

i'm going to do my best to photo-document as much as i can. usually i get really into a project and then when it's mostly done i realize, oh crap - i forgot to take pictures. i'm going to try to do a better job with this one.

:cheers

Sounds like the Touring will be awesome. Where did/will you source the anthracite headliner for the touring from? Also, is the rear section for the struts plug and play with sedan bits? I remember randomly looking a long time ago and Koni gave different part numbers for a touring.

Best of luck!

thanks dane. it's going to be a rollercoaster!

Soooo.... you're pretty much building the perfect zhp touring. SICK. When are you looking to get started?

thanks - that is my goal! it's going to be a weird amalgamation of ZHP and M Sport and Touring... basically a 'what if BMW made this' car.... except i've got some upgrades going in (like the LSD, and suspension stuff). otherwise OEM+. :)

paintwork for bumpers and rust/dent repair begins on april 3rd... so i'm hoping to get the interior done before then. teardown of the sedan will commence when the Touring goes in for paintwork because i have to repair some things on my wife's montero now (wheel bearing, front brakes, shocks, ball joints, etc), and i will need to use it for DD use while the Touring is in for paintwork.

Well, it's not Imola (or Estoril) so it can't be perfect. He can get pretty close though. :biggrin

i actually like japanrot better than imolarot... it's more 'red' and contrasts with the shadowline trim better.

but estoril......... oh dear. :) yes please!

Nice, Peter! It sounds like you've thought about it for a while and are confident in the choice you've made.

And if you don't post EXTENSIVE photo documentation...

LOL... thanks. :)

i found a black Touring headliner. ;)

yep, the suspension is exactly the same as the sedan and coupe. some manufacturers make a 'Touring-specific' spring, which has a higher rear rate and length to cope with the extra 80lbs. but i'll be using coilovers, so no worries there (i am increasing the spring rate though).

I remember reading Peter's threads and emails after deciding to buy the Estoril, but before actually meeting him, and thinking "this guy is crazy!" hahaha.... YES, i am a little crazy. :) but hey, i don't care. you're just as crazy, but perhaps in a different way. ;)

i think that 'neat' factor is another reason why i want to do this project and keep it as my DD. it's even rarer than my ZHP on several levels, and i like that (no one should be surprised by that at this point. ;) )

and yes, whenever we make it down to NC/SC, i want to bring this car for sure!

The first time I heard about this plan, I had the same reaction - 'Whoa! You're crazy!'

thanks daniel. yeah, i hope it does - and that is why i documented stuff with my other project. knowledge is useless unless you share it, and i love helping people.

re: the supercharger.... well, i dunno. the car is MS45.1 and rob can attest to how much fun the tuning process is. maybe someday. but not likely. :)

re: selling the montero - my wife loves it. the only vehicle she'd give it up for is a 7-passenger X5. which..... i would love, and honestly at this point it likely is about the same amount of PITA that the montero is, maintenance-wise. i would want an X35d, i think.

Congrats on making the [correct] decision!

yes, the scope was hard. but it feels natural. and i love hunting for parts... ;)

the Touring's middle carpet section is actually a hard board, and no rubber on the backside. i will be getting a BMW trunk mat.

haha. thanks man, it will require some serious planning, as i only have a 1-car garage. i am planning to buy some car dollies, an engine hoist, and a transmission jack in the next couple of weeks to get ready for it.

i will likely pull the ZHP into the garage, remove stuff.... then put the bare chassis on the car dollies and push it out of the garage. then pull in the Touring and begin work.

i'm going to remove the ZHP engine/trans/front subframe/steering rack/suspension as a whole unit - since i'm using it all as-is anyway, although i will be installing a valeo SMF conversion kit with new clutch. forgot to mention that in my notes. :)

crazy. i would actually consider a new golf 4motion wagon for my wife, but the 7-passenger requirement is a bit of a deal killer. i really liked the golf alltrak thing at NAIAS.

Is there no hope? I'm guessing the acute onset financial deficiency might somehow be related?

It's always been a very polarizing color, it seems. If I were making a garage queen E36, I think it'd have to be in an obnoxious color like Dakar on Black, or Technoviolet on Modena.

The dakar yellow works better on the E36, and the technoviolet is very cool. Technoviolet, avus blue, and estoril are the best e36 M3 colors.

roof rails back on.

wife pretty much only drives the Touring now ("the truck sounds grumbly." - it needs a wheel bearing or two.)

that is all for now. been working on my house a lot - bathroom, laundry room, and front hall closet done. 10" wide pine floors installed, first coat of poly (oil-based, of course) went on the floors in the addition this afternoon. totally high on fumes. this stuff dries so fast, second coat has to go on before midnight. next up - window and door trim, baseboards, and custom doors - 6 of them. and i really need to build a crosscut sled for my tablesaw.

and i'm sick. blech. mineral spirits, polyurethane fumes, and tylenol cold + sinus. just need a glass of wine now to complete it... :cheers

1) Roof rails back on? http://i.imgur.com/OnLEt1U.gif
2) How does the wife like the Touring compared to the SUUUUUV when they're both running well?
3) Nice work, seems like you're trucking right along. What is your overall plan for your house work? I can't remember. I vaguely believe there was some mention of garage work or are my own fantasies muddling things?
4) Bummer about the cold but I think you're on the right track (add wine and maybe some suspiciously outdated cheese).

dude, you're AnimaGifs are hilarious.

my wife probably wouldn't admit to liking the Touring at all, but she has admitted to the much, much better fuel consumption. really though, once i get The Tank sorted out she will likely start driving it again. it needs a wheel bearing, front brakes, front ball joints, new shocks, LSx...

the house plan is to enclose the breezeway we had between the house and the garage. new foundation for the front/back walls, new front/back walls, new floor, added a new front door, front deck, 3 gables into the existing roofline of the breezeway, additional 2-piece bath, laundry closet, front hall closet, 2 more storage closets (200-year old houses always hurt for storage space)..... it really wrapped up a lot of loose ends in our house and added another maybe 200sf of living space - it doesn't sound like a lot, but it adds so much in how the space is used.

the problem with the knex rollercoaster is 2-fold.... a) my son doesn't seem that interested, and b) with the reno going on, the rest of the house is crammed with furniture that doesn't belong there. :) we'll get 'er done once the mess is cleaned up.

i'll post some pics of the project when it's done - it's close, just have trim to finish and doors to build. and, and new siding and shingles... oof.

well, she would be the first to tell you that she doesn't care about cars. but she does enjoy driving a manual trans.

yeah, it's a big project. i was fortunate to be able to hire a friend who used to be a builder to come and help me with the structural aspects, so that we could get it all closed in before winter. we started the project in mid- to late-october, which is not ideal when considering in late november we opened a gaping hole in the backside of the house for 2-3 days to rebuild the back wall of this part of the house. i really should have been done with everything inside already, but i took a sanity break in january to regroup a bit. big projects like this are not what i want to be doing right now, but the housing market is exploding around here at the moment and we might be moving in the next year, so i both want to finish the house and also enjoy it a little before we sell - and the changes/additions we've made are going to make us a lot more back when we sell it.

the problem with a booming market is.... well, buying at inflated prices too. i have crazy desire to pocket 1/3 of the profits, and with the rest, buy a remote plot of land and a tiny house and go off-grid.

Interesting. I'm sure it'll turn out great, and as you say, will definitely help when you sell it. How come you're planning on moving? Going off grid is the retirement dream. Maybe somewhere up in Montana...:biggrin

I feel like the housing market is booming everywhere. My parents put in an offer last year for a house that wasn't even really on the market yet. Over the weekend the owners got back to them and said they'd taken an offer by a couple from California who were giving $100k over asking in cash. Just ridiculous.

i live in canada.... i inquired with my local BMW dealer and they said they could get one. nic on here has one, the guy who built his Touring obviously got it somewhere. and canada got 6 Tourings with MTechII kit.

OK, here are some pics. these are from my paint guy and came over via text, so they are really tiny. major stuff getting done:

1. RR arch: rust right where the arch meets the bumper. the car is very clean rust-wise, but this spot was some weird anomaly.

2. hatch: the were several little bubbles along the very bottom edge of the hatch, as well as a few tiny bubbles just above the hatch release handle. i also had him de-badge the hatch... i like a clean butt. :)

3. LR arch and LR door: there was a huge scratch down the LR door and arch, almost to the taillight - PO said it was from a branch. not sure, most likely was keyed. also there was a small dent and crease in the LR door, LR arch just behind the LR door, and a dent in the LR arch where it met the bumper (along with some chipped paint).

4. MTechII bumpers and skirts painted.

it hopefully will be done by friday, and i will do re-assembly on saturday. then the rest of the project commences... :)

not sure what the final tally will be, but probably around $1500 (including painting the bumpers). a lot of it depends on the cost of the paint (imola is on the expensive side, for example), and who is doing the work.

You see, that number doesn't scare me at all. Essentially half your car is getting rust-repaired and painted for that price... but the quote I got to fix this bloody GLI was $1100 just in labor for a front bumper and fender respray... the parts were another $900 but that's a different story.

I want to the get the front redone and a few other areas touched up but I'm just dreading the quote that would inevitably be something absurd like 3-4 grand.

You see, that number doesn't scare me at all. Essentially half your car is getting rust-repaired and painted for that price... but the quote I got to fix this bloody GLI was $1100 just in labor for a front bumper and fender respray... the parts were another $900 but that's a different story.

I want to the get the front redone and a few other areas touched up but I'm just dreading the quote that would inevitably be something absurd like 3-4 grand.

a full glass-out respray is like $5-7K. no way a front end respray would be $3-4K...

most body shops charge roughly $300 to paint a bumper.

Really? That seems pretty low to me. When I had my trunk resprayed due to my old car being keyed in Philly, it hit my $500 deductible with ease. I forget what the total was but it was not low.

weird. that's generally what i've paid for bumper painting since i can remember.

Front end re-spray and rear bumper ran me about $1500 for Imola paint.

My experience with paint is pretty similar. Had to replace the front bumper on my Mazda3 (and repainted fenders + hood for blending). Would've run $3100 without insurance. Granted I didn't "shop around" since insurance footed most of the bill.

$300 for a bumper sounds ok to me. I paid that on 2 different occasions. My bodyshop is probably among the cheapest. The guy doesn't advertise, have website or receptionist. It's only him and one helper.

I looked into getting my ZHP touched up (rear quarters, front driver's side A-pillar, bootlid and rear bumper) and was quoted $5k. Haven't done the touch up yet....

Peter, I'm really looking forward to the updated pics of your touring! :thumbsup

here are some quickies. the car is dirty, my iPhone lens was linty, and i don't have the right side skirt on because as i was mounting it, i found a rust bubble near the front jack pad that i needed to sand down and protect. which i did tonight.

changes to note:

- rust/scratches/dents fixed and painted
- MTechII bumpers, front lower wheel liners/brake ducts/bumper brackets, fog lights, and side skirt (the other will go on tomorrow)
- BMW Performance grilles (i like them better on japanrot, but still not 100% sure if i'll use them or the stock ones)
- OEM clear front corner lights and side marker lights
- OEM red/clear taillights
- removed '325i' badging - love a clean butt
- Style 68s (ARC-8s will go on when i complete the drivetrain/suspension/brake swap)
- replaced broken front intake/radiator duct

overall i'm happy with it - it looks like a factory euro M Sport, and if i wax and seal the crap out of it, hopefully it will stay looking nice for a long time.

now onto the interior... :cheers

i dunno - i LOVE they way they look, but

a) they are expensive
b) they are a PITA to mount
c) they have less actual mirror to use

i likely will stick with the OE mirrors unless a set lands in my lap, or a good aftermarket option becomes available.

slater

thinking about getting some 18x8.5" ET45 and 18x9.5" ET58 (+ 5mm spacers) apex ARC-8s. if i stick with the stock ZHP springs (and run konis with them), the 18x8.5" ET38 ARC-8s i've got are going to be pretty pokey in the front. and i would love wider meats in the rear, but contained inside the stock arches. would run either 225/40/18 + 255/35/18 PSS, or 235/40/18 + 265/35/18 PSS.

hmmmm.
