Net wo me ZHP - purchased with badly clogged cats that I had replaced. It's a super high-mileage car but I'd say that it's in good condition overall. The interior is excellent, and minus a couple of typical rust spots that could be addressed, the exterior is pretty good too. The car had been maintained by my good friend who is an independent BMW specialist.

Over the past couple of weeks I have replaced the cats with known-good used parts, replaced the burnt ZKW headlights with ALs, replaced the control arms, swapped in PowerFlex black control arm bushings, installed a Rogue Octane SSK, replaced the fuel pump, replaced the plugs, changed the oil, and had the car detailed. I've been driving it for the past few days and other than what I'd consider to be excessive oil consumption it's been great - like stepping into a time machine from my younger days.

So my next steps are going to be to try and solve the oil consumption if possible (no leaks, not smoking :confused ), it will get Turner subframe reinforcements, all poly bushings in the rear of the car (RTAB, subframe, etc), coilovers, and it will be my track toy. I fully expect to pop the old motor on the track, at which point I'll get a used motor swapped in.

Welcome. man ! Your car looks great. Any interior pics ? How many miles on the clock ? Mine is 2005 with 142,500 miles and it's using 1 quart of oil every 1,000 miles. How's your oil consumption compared to mine ?

Thanks! Here are a couple of quick interior snaps:

The car has 245k miles, and I burned just under a quart in the first 500 miles. I suppose it could be rings or valve stem seals, but I really don't see any blue or white smoke. It has BMW 5w30 in it now, so I'll switch it to a 5w40 and see if it helps.

Very good interior combo, IMHO. Please report back after you switch to 5w40. That's what I use now.

Your oil consumption problem will be solved with either of the following:
1) catch can to replace the CCV
2) an extra vacuum hose from the CCV to the back of the intake manifold

I burned a quart every 600-700 miles as well 'till I implemented solution #2. Now I burn a quart every 2.5k miles. I have just about 260k on the odo.

Do I ever. I absolutely loved that car, my buddies joke that it was the most photographed car ever. Here are a few:

These were from a day or 2 before I traded it in. Long story short, when I went back to school I kept the car for as long as I could afford to, but eventually traded it in for a Civic when I started to run out of money. 'Twas a sad day.

Not super keen on the smell or potential to forget to empty it that can come with a catch can, but option 2 is intriguing. Is this what people call the "O2Pilot mod"? I'll have to check it out. When I traded in my red ZHP it was burning about a quart every 3500-5000 miles, depending upon how I drove it - is this added burning just due to wear, or are the new CCV parts inferior to the originals? Thanks for the heads up.

Welcome back.

Thanks Dane :)

Hmm, was this in Easton by any chance?? I took a pic in Easton with a backdrop that is eerily similar:

Yes, that's the one.

I think it's due to fauly piston ring design. There was a video around somewhere explaining it - if I remember correctly, the gist of it was that due to the design of the piston rings, it allows excess oil to seep past them, burning it off. As it wears, it gets worse. The added vacuum helps prevent as much of the oil getting past the piston rings... or something. I don't know about the details too much - all I care about is that it works. :)

welcome! love the VT shots, i grew up about 45min from woodstock.

skip the poly RTABs and go sealed spherical, and skip the turner plates as they don't do squat. if you are bothering to reinforce the RACP you'll need a VinceBar!

:cheers

Nice! I love it up there.

As far as the subframe reinforcement, what do you think about the BMW Epoxy Injection fix from the SIB? I'd like to get that done too.

Beautiful pics of the car. Welcome back to the ZHP!
