View Full Version : Flying down to NC to get my zhp on Friday

can't freaking wait.

Imola, 6spd. No cold weather package but seller claims to have premium package which i'll confirm, but even if it doesn't have it i don't really care. The only thing i'd like out of it is the auto garage opener.

Car goes for inspection Monday morning at BMW dealer and pending any surprises wife and i would fly out Friday morning to go get it. 10hr drive so we'll do 2 legs stopping for a night out in the dc/baltimore area

52,007 current miles
clean carfax
2 keys and manuals

Maintenance recently done by owner:
NGK Plugs
oil change
new rotors / pads (4)
wipers / washer fluid pump
front window regulator

Dealer maintenance by previous owner:

recall for rear lights (2011)
recall for driver airbag (2014)
vcg (2014)
brake fluid flush and mirror covers replaced (2015)

Made mention of coil packs being replaced due to recall which i had not heard of but has sticker under hood showing replacement

Other than bill of sale and title, what else do i need to get from the seller?

NYRhockey
01-21-2017, 04:16 PM
Also, what do i need to ge/dot in order to be able to drive it back? i could slap a plate from another car but would prefer to do it the legit way.

I'm not really sure but it sounds like you would just need a bill of sale and title. I don't think you would need the plates. Also, I have never heard of a recall on the coil packs. Regardless, congratulations. Good luck with the car

Congrats, hopefully it works out! Sounds like a great find.

I would just like to ask, are you correct in saying it's had the driver's side airbag recall done, not the passenger's side? I feel like if it was done in 2014, the passenger's side would be more likely to have been completed.

NYRhockey
01-21-2017, 05:00 PM
The seller said driver's side on 11/22/14 but carfax only has the passenger side on 7/15/14. He had called BMW Austin where the car previously was and wrote what he was told. I will do the same and call next week and see what records they will give me over the phone.

Is that all it is for the upper console piece?

The alternative is getting an E90 rearview mirror with HomeLink (garage door opener), autodim, and compass. Was about $150 for the mirror and I love it in mine.

Yep, such as this one: http://www.ebay.com/itm/OEM-BMW-E38-E39-X5-E46-E36-HOMELINK-Remote-Garage-door-opener-transmitter-/122320639875?hash=item1c7ae0d783:g:jjkAAOSwImRYg6L c&vxp=mtr

There are dozens on ebay, anywhere from $15-$50......

Remove the console piece from the roof, carefully cut out the indentation on the back. Find the wire plug in the headliner, plug in and you are set!! Plenty of DIYs out there.......

Tip: search for ones with the white numbers on the buttons, it can handle rolling code garage door openers. The black letter versions could not.

Congrats, man. IR FTW ! BMW of Austin is notorious because they rarely enter svc recs in Carfax.

Very likely you can buy a temp permit with your DMV online. Here in TX the sell for $5 and are good for 5 days.

My state DMV has a temporary trip permit that you can buy and print online. See if your state does.

https://www.dmv.virginia.gov/vehicles/temp_permit.html

Trip Permit

Do you need to move an unregistered vehicle from one location to another? Then, a trip permit or a prospective purchaser's trip permit might be just what you need.

Standard Trip Permit
A standard trip permit allows the owner of any motor vehicle, trailer or semitrailer to move the vehicle from one location to another without registering the vehicle. These permits are valid for three consecutive days. Motorized vehicles must be properly insured or the owner must pay 1/12 of the $500 uninsured motor vehicle fee. Non-motorized trailers are NOT required to be insured; however, they should be pulled by a properly insured vehicle. If the vehicle is designed as a property-carrying vehicle, it must be unladen while operating under the authority of the trip permit. The Virginia trip permit is valid only in Virginia. The customer must contact other state(s) if the travel route is outside of Virginia.

Applying For a Standard Trip Permit
If you are the vehicle owner and want to move your unregistered vehicle, you are required to apply for a trip permit. You will need:
point of origin and point of destination;
dates of travel;
$5 permit fee;
insurance certification or payment of 1/12 of the uninsured motor vehicle fee for motorized vehicles ONLY.

Prospective Purchaser's Trip Permit
A prospective purchaser's trip permit is available for Virginia residents who intend to purchase a vehicle that will be titled/registered in Virginia. These permits are valid for three days, beginning on the date of the purchase (as indicated on the bill of sale). The original bill of sale must be attached to the permit to validate the permit, and the permit must be displayed in the vehicle window while the vehicle is operated under the permit. If the customer has not purchased the vehicle WITHIN 15 DAYS after printing the permit, he must purchase another permit.

Congrats!!! Great looking car with super low miles too. I did a similar thing last year and went from NY to WV. It had only 40K on the clock and was in pristine shape. Previous owner added a BMW accessory Homelink to the overhead, but I'm sure the ebay ones will be just fine too.

car is in Raleigh, NC. Wife and i are flying out of white plains, NY (6:20am departure, oy) and have a short layover in Washington. Have decided on staying in Baltimore Fri night so looking forward to the experience.

So far i am very happy with the seller. Seems he is an enthusiast himself and is very responsive and open to questions.

i81 is too far west, so it'd be i-95.

However, if i had an extra day (need to be back home in CT by saturday afternoon), i'd like to go on the blue ridge parkway. Saw a recent article that it's one of the best drives around.

I live in NC. All you need is title, bill of sale is a plus but not required. The title must me notarized, but he can have it done before hand. Only the seller needs to be present at time of notary.
I have driven cars home on the sellers tag before and mailed it back to them. You can sign a release of liability so that they are covered in he case of an accident. I think the NCDMV website has a PDF.

precisely. although at 9/32" it's likely they have been replaced before, but if they are the same age as the rears... yeah, i'd replace them. also, for dry-rotting like that, i imagine they are at least 6-7 years old. that's old for a tire.

So far only getting the rears and let the guys at the shop tell me if the front ones need replacing as well.

The ones at the store are a/s 3 plus and the seller didn't mention the "plus" so wonder if it could be an indication of age

the fronts are AS/3's? because those rears in the pic are not AS/3's...

AS/3+ is supposed to be, according to the michelin rep i spoke to at NAIAS, almost on par with the PSS. which is why they ended up coming out with the PS4S.

I looked at the numbers tirerack had for I believe the DW's and DWS's. From what I recall, it was two separate tests, but the performance difference in the dry was marginal. It's not exactly scientific, but it was a bit surprising.

I'm thinking that the PSS got the update because it's almost 10 years old now. Not saying that rep was lying or the AS/3+ isn't close to PSS (I've never driven a car with either tire so I wouldn't know) but I think they would've released the PS4S irrespective...

I'd say you'll be fine as long as the vehicle is properly insured.
I got lucky with mine in that the previous owner let me keep his plates on there for the drive home. I actually had to keep it on for a couple of months because the Massachusetts RMV lost my title, and had to go through the duplicate title process to register my car. lol

You don't need a release of liability form. It's not required in NC. All it does is protect the seller. You can drive it with the tag and his insurance as long as he is cool with it.

If he is not going to let you use the tag, you could just make sure you had insurance and drove it home without a tag. You might get stopped, and you might get a ticket, but I would think most cops are cool.

Another option, borrow a plate and insurance cards of someone else here on the forum with a IR sedan. Cops won't check a vin when they stop you.

Do not put other plates on the car if you get stopped that could be seen as a stolen vehicle. You are better off driving without faults and have a bill of sale with the title. If you can get to the DMV snag a temp tag.

Well depending on the DMV - who wants to stand or sit in line for 1-4 hours?

I mean I get that but if I'm driving a new to me car through multiple states in a day I would make sure I have all the relevant paperwork so that I don't get into trouble with the cops. I'm sure most of us wouldn't take a chance but if I need to go to the DMV and wait in line for a couple of hours then that's what I would do. For me the stress of most likely not having the right paperwork while driving would be more than the stress of waiting in line at the DMV [emoji4]

Don't know about NC, but here in AL you can drive a car 20 days after purchase without having gotten a tag for it. There are no temp tags in AL. All you need is the salespaperwork........

I heard something similar for Michigan but I think it's a couple of days instead of the 20 days...

That is what a cop told me in Florida. Not sure how other states view it. There are some laws around using plates from another car that could get you into trouble.

I actually spoke with the seller and he's letting me use his tags so feel better about that.

Temp / trip permit would mean i have to go to the dmv so it'd take too long. It's either his plates or mine from another car.

That's the way it should be! If you want to start reducing those awful dmv lines, and in ct it's torture, then let people get things like this online.

Thanks. Yes, it was a pain to find it. The other one had 73K and got it for $10K which was a gift. This one has 52K but it was $15K, so hardly a bargain and probably a bit of overpay, but for the mileage i was willing to suck it up.

You can also get a digital readout of the temperature on the small display in the gauge cluster, than relying on the temperature gauge. It does not require any additional software or anything. This is more "accurate" than the temperature gauge because it gives exact temperature numbers rather than a range of temperatures. If I recall correctly, the factory setting for "normal" operating temperature (i.e. the gauge reading straight up) according to the temperature gauge is 75-115 degrees celcius, which is way too broad in my opinion. The digital readout should be easier to monitor coolant temperature changes than the temperature gauge.

At any rate, to get the digital readout, you can follow this video:

Finally home! The second leg went well, the car ran beautifully and the temp gauge did not move a millimeter. Car is now parked for the night and will take a look at the coolant level again in the morning. If it's low/dry again no way around it i'll start getting quotes for a full refresh on Monday morning.

The night in Baltimore was great. Stayed at the Marriott Waterfront and got a room on the 29th floor so beautiful view of the city and went out for a nice dinner at McCormick's and Schmicks. Pricey night, though. Upon getting to CT was able to meet up with BP for a few minutes before finally putting her down for the night.

I checked the coolant again this morning when cold and it was below the minimum, where the tip of the stick was about an inch from the top of the tank after i had filled it up to the max before departing. The garage floor was dry with no marks so it leaked during travel, not overnight.

I had told the seller about the issue when we left Baltimore and he said he thought it was this hose (he gave me a replacement one), so my questions to you folks are: 1) Could this be the cause. It's located in the front of the car towards the bottom of the engine bay, so it's hard to see from above. I believe this holds the coolant sensor the PPI made mention of. 2) When i do a coolant refresh, is this included as the parts that get changed by the shop?

28844

san
01-29-2017, 07:13 PM
1. Yes it could be the cause
2. Yes it should be part of the cooling system refresh

If you are planning to buy parts for the cooling system then I would recommend buying them from fcpeuro as they offer lifetime warranty on their parts...

Also I would recommend buying BMW parts as parts made by other brands do not last as long. I think Vas had a bad experience with non BMW parts which were on the car when he bought it...

edwin.colo

1) could be
2) yes, that's the lower cooling hose... usually it consists of upper/lower cooling hoses, water pump, thermostat, expansion tank, (some people do radiator, but with your miles probably overkill).

I would do the belts if they are dry rotted or cracked.

It's should be included. It's the lower radiator hose. I would suggest you do the complete cooling system overhaul.

Upper radiator hose - p/n 17127510952
Lower radiator hose - p/n 11531436408 (and small O ring seal for temp sensor, part # - 091158010)
Water pump - p/n 11517509985
Thermostat - p/n 11537509227
Expansion tank - p/n 17117573781

Doesn't sound ridiculous, but I'm glad I'm not the one paying! It's not a matter of "knowing what they're doing" - it's what the book times are for the jobs.
BMW dealers use BMW parts, not equivalents. Rein makes the hoses.

It could take a couple of hours. If you get an estimate, ask for a break down in price of parts and labor and what their rates are.

A full parts list can be had below. Everything is the same as Sreten's list, with a few more items. Also, Sreten, I think you have the wrong upper radiator hose part number? It's one too many numbers I think.

Radiator (Behr) - 17119071518
Expansion tank - 17117573781
Expansion tank cap - E46 - 17117639022 (2.0 bar) or E30 - 17137639023 (1.4 bar)
Expansion tank mounting clamp - 17111707777
Water pump - 11517509985
Thermostat - 11537509227
Upper radiator hose - 17127510952
Lower radiator hose - 11531436408
Coolant temperature sensor/auxiliary fan switch - 13621433077
Coolant level sensor - 17137553919
Coolant - 82141467704

Other optional parts:

Water pump pulley - 11511436590
Hex bolt for water pump pulley (4x) - 07119904524
Expansion tank mounting bracket - 17111436250

I think my upper and lower radiator hoses are Rein, and I haven't had a problem with them, but others might disagree. Everything else is BMW except for the radiator (Behr). The radiator isn't necessarily necessary, nor are the sensors, but they're all "while you're in there" type items in my opinion. Also, I put the E30 expansion tank cap in there because it's lower pressure and there is a school of thought that having that will keep pressures in the cooling system down and extend the longevity/integrity of the system.

Dealers use only OE parts, and give a 2 year warranty on parts and labor.

But, a cooling system is not hard to do. If you have a garage that we can throw some heat in and some space to work with, I can assist you with said maintenance.

You definitely aren't going to find all the parts needed for $277.99. If you do, they're off brands... not sure I'd trust those.

Sreten
01-29-2017, 08:20 PM
BMWCurves, you are right. It's corrected.

I also never had any problems with Rein either.

You definitely aren't going to find all the parts needed for $277.99. If you do, they're off brands... not sure I'd trust those.

Why not? That's the price for the kit from FCP. I would add few more things but that's about that price.

Only thing I wouldn't use there is Graf water pump. It looks badly welded and it started making noise 50 miles after I had it installed.
I usually go for Saleri which has composite impellers.

Shops make money selling you same parts at the higher price and a lot of them won't do the job if you provide the parts.

Like everybody said, try to DIY. It's not that hard and if somebody can help you even better.

Sounds like the best option. That said I got quoted about $1000 for a refresh including radiator and a water pump using genuine BMW parts. That was one of the more reasonable estimates.

slater
01-30-2017, 06:25 AM
you should have some traces of coolant (it dries white) on the top of the belly pan or around coolant hose connections (and the temp sensor in that hose)... that said, if it's leaking enough to be down in level again, it's entirely possible the system wasn't filled/bled correctly the last time. i would do a fill/bleed and then monitor.

It's should be included. It's the lower radiator hose. I would suggest you do the complete cooling system overhaul.

Upper radiator hose - p/n 17127510952
Lower radiator hose - p/n 11531436408 (and small O ring seal for temp sensor, part # - 091158010)
Water pump - p/n 11517509985
Thermostat - p/n 11537509227
Expansion tank - p/n 17117573781
Blue BMW coolant - p/n 82141467704
I also like to use bleed screw from brass material p/n 17111712788 - http://www.rmeuropean.com/Products/17111712788-MFG230-V299.aspx

I like FCP or RMeuropean.

Here's a link for the whole kit from FCP.

I'm in bed same boat picked up my sedan last month with 115k with a slight leak. It also has a bad thermostat. Is the oem pump recommended or aftermarket with a metal impeller?

Anyone in Florida wanna help me do a system refresh?

Do keep in mind that BMW does offer a 2 year warranty on parts as well.

My choice would be this

This is defintitely a DIY or at minimum, do the upper hoses yourself to save money. And, look into local independent mechanics.

The thermostat and water pump are pretty easy to do.
No need for a metal impeller. The OEM pump has a composite impeller with a stainless steel sleeve on the shaft for extra support. They had a bad design way back in '99 or so and that's where everyone's paranoia comes from but that's ancient history now

Ya as Vas and BP have said dealers/BMW do offer a 2 year warranty but I don't think the cooling system is something you would change in 2 years.
I chose fcpeuro as they offer lifetime warranty, which for a cooling system makes sense IMO...

This. Any OE parts I buy come from FCP for this reason. Heck, that's my first stop shop for ANY maintenance parts I buy.

Ha....yes...in the end it is all pretty easy to do...until you've had a bolt that holds the thermostat soak in coolant because of a leak and rust into the head.....then it's no bueno.

So I was looking at fcp and the kits all have aftermarket parts in them. Should I buy the full BMW kit from Ecs instead to keep it oem?

I would stick with fcpeuro for their lifetime warranty... you can make you own kit using part numbers and I believe they price match too (not too sure, never had to)...

I bought the FCP kit and it has worked great... rein hoses, Graf metal pump, etc. All working great with no issues.

I wouldn't use Graf water pump again. With all of those weldings it just looks shitty made.
Mine started squeaking between 50 and 100 miles after the install. Sent it back under warranty and got Saleri w/pump with composite impeller and had no problems so far.

They are probably using a job rate book but the water pump and thermostat can easily be done in half that time

NYRhockey

Yea, that is pretty obscene. At those rates i'd probably hold off on water pump / thermostat since mileage is low and do that next time around.

What these guys said. It shouldn't take more than maybe an hour to do a water pump, and that's taking your time.

I wouldn't recommend that. If the thermostat fails you'd be ok because it would just over cool the coolant but if the water pump fails you are pretty much stranded...

If you don't feel a DIY is in your wheel house, there has got to be someone on the forum that lives close by that I'm sure would be willing to help a fellow member out. You get to see it get done and learn how to. I guarantee that you will not hesitate to do it the next time around.
I would help but I'm in Eastern NC.

Already offered. I live less than an hour away. :thumbsup
I think he wants the comfort of a labor and parts warranty from a shop, which is probably why he's getting quotes.

I've been watching videos the past couple of days and yes, it's out of my league. In dancing terms i have two left feet and no tools so that's why i can't venture on it. BP has already offered to help but all i can offer on my end is beer and food since my technical skills are non existent.

If you're willing to help out a n00b i'll take you on it, but beware that while i'm willing to listen and learn i go into this with zero skills where i can't even change my oil :) you'd also need to tell me what type of tools i need so i can get them prior.

We all started the same way - few were born with the skills! With the DIY write-ups & videos available these days it's much easier than when I first started wrenching on my 2002 37 years ago!

I've got the tools we need. We can keep a list of what tools were used and we can assemble a basic tool kit listing that you can purchase for future use.
All I need is a garage that has the capability of being heated. Do you have one of those? :)

Sort of, in that it was not done at a shop but not really "myself" as much as BP being awesome and doing it.

Didn't buy a pre-packaged kit but rather built a shopping car at FCP Euro. These are the parts that were replaced:

Upper and lower radiator hose (with fan switch)
Expansion tank and cap
Thermostat / housing
Water pump
Drive / AC Belt
Coolant sensor
Bleed screw (metal)

Here is the list with brands used

Upper and lower radiator hose (with fan switch) - Rein
Expansion tank and cap - BMW
Thermostat / housing - Wahler
Water pump - BMW
Drive / AC Belt - Contitech
Coolant sensor - BMW
Bleed screw (metal) - Forget, but got it at ECS tuning actually
