Finally got around to running a switched 12v+ to my e90 autodimming mirror and got the homelink setup. Piece o cake. I saw that there was wiring in place for sending a dimming signal to the side mirrors. Is this a thing on these cars? Do want.

But more importantly...drumroll.gif...the Japanese LEDs work freaking great!

Do you see these sweet ass bitties?

https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170424/aab219d67e640b1d710ed5938871a248.jpg

They output some hella good light and fill the reflector housing even better than the OE incandescent bulbs! Here's some comparisons with the LED in just the drivers side:

I had been holding off on posting anything about them for a week while I was testing them, but I've had no issues/errors/hyperflash and installed a pair in Spenser's blue car the other day without issue too. Only thing I would recommend is disabling the cold/hot checks in PA Soft so that they don't flicker when you start the car. These bad boys is the real deal yo.

The catch? They're $45 a pair and can only be purchased in Japan. So what did I do? I went ahead and bought 10 sets to bring the cost to a manageable $50 a pair. (Yes, I spent $500 on Amazon Japan and my credit card company didn't even call me)

I'm travelling for work this week, but I'll make a separate post when I get back to see who wants me to send them some and the rest will go on eBay.

Yeah man I'm really impressed and not at all upset about the cost given their performance.

The flicker is just when the car is doing the checks on those lights when you first start the car. I guess it just sends a small signal current to the bulbs to see if they're working and it's enough to barely activate the LEDs. You don't have to turn it off, but I did because I didn't like the flicker. You'll still get a warning if the bulb goes out. It'll just be when you go to use it instead of earlier.

Those LED's are SICK AF
My car does this flicker thing with my corner LED's and the halo's then you start it. What did you turn off to get them to stop flickering?

If you go to the LCM coding menu in PA Soft, you'll see these check boxes for hot and cold check. Just uncheck whatever you don't want scanned at startup (cold check) and intermittently while driving (hot check). Those are what give you the flicker.

This isn't my image, but it shows the hot/cold check options as they're preselected from the factory. I only disabled it for the front turn signals and left the BC message box checked, assuming that's your error message when it detects bulb out.

Funny enough, this discussion came up the other night. I'm traveling this week, so I let Spenser borrow the quickjack while I'm gone. We were loading it into the blue car, him lifting at the trunk and me climbing halfway in behind the driver's seat and cursing.

We were talking about how we couldn't let the elitist sedan crowd know that we had any trouble with it...and then we thought of Peter and his radio flyer...oh how he would go on and on about how many quickjacks he could carry at once...

Yeah yeah, the sedans have more "trunk space" and "utility" and tourings can fit "5-10 dead bodies depending on your level of respect for the dead, the size of the deceased, and how many limbs you cut off," but I will say that the coupe can manage to do a fair amount of hauling. I mean I bet I could fit like five kids in the trunk alone. That came out wrong...

http://i.imgur.com/PO89vIX.gif

During the year and half that I owned my old 330Ci ZSP, I was one of two friends with cars (the other a tiny Mazda2) so I ended up helping a number of people move their stuff around. One of the largest hauls was moving all of the lumber and tools in one trip that was necessary for my buddy to build his loft in my apartment. Sadly I lost the photos of it all packed into my car, but I do have a photo of most of the wood in the apartment:

Before the build
29748

After (also hauled the mattress on the roof (that was fun) and all of his furniture. That was actually a funny story. He's foreign and wasn't sure when he'd have to leave the states (yay immigration) so he just squatted in me and my friend's HUGE apartment in south Philly. Good times were had by 2/3rds of the occupants.
29749

I also hauled most of my stuff back from Philadelphia when I moved across the country. That includes a 42" TV, all of my clothes, a female friend's MASSIVE two suitcases, two cherished painting, and a lot of other useless junk like my altogether reasonable 3 foot-wide sombrero that has seen some shit. Trunk before the move:

http://i.imgur.com/2Kkk7sk.jpg

Back seat:
http://i.imgur.com/kT5KfxB.jpg

I then proceeded to eviscerate an antelope with the business end of that car totally on purpose, so...who's laughing now? Checkmate sedan/touring plebes.
Does that have anything to do with sedans or tourings? No.
Do I care? Of course not, I won't have my self-aggrandizing and ridiculous rants derailed by something as stupid as "rational thought" or "logical arguments"

29750

Toodles.

Any updates on the FSD install or pics?
Ugh...FINE.

Install went well. Rears were, of course, stupid easy. The FSD's came with their own bump stops installed under the dust boot and I added new Rogue RSM's, so the only part that I reused was the lower bolt.

The fronts were a headache because I was hell bent on not using Chinese death traps aka spring compressors.

I used my go-to method of supporting the strut with a jack...

https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170607/988e24bddf44d0fb8e70faa263cb27ef.jpg

Then popped the rubber grip tube out of a 13/16" spark plug socket...

https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170607/bf10b5d6768bb3e9f0d365b820a993e4.jpg

So that I could run an Allen wrench through the center...

https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170607/d8ac32d5259915960aa5c0f69c407d15.jpg

And remove the strut nut while holding the tube in place...

https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170607/ab2687b8a57d3d459c5c293ef25fde68.jpg

Then slowly lowered the jack and was able to fish out the spring...

https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170607/9d751bc75326c255808b5a36f11b990e.jpg

https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170607/7d59c5f2636a5e314b2a039a1bcc68e6.jpg

And swapped over the bump stops, dust boots, and spring pads to the ridiculous new gold struts...

THEN I ran into a wall. I reassembled as I had taken everything apart and tried with all of my might to get the strut to feed up through the mount. I fought and cursed and went through three iterations of guide pin contraptions with no success.

I gave up, had a beer, and prepared for what was to come the next day.

CHINESE-MOTHAFUCKIN-DEATH-TRAPS

https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170607/d4aa8b9639f0dea3de09c00f45a8babd.jpg

I was very, very patient with these dinky things and must have stopped three times to undo my progress and reset the compressors after they had slipped around the spring a bit. The amount of unstable potential energy in these things terrifies me.

BUT WE SHALL OVERCOME

I really like it for safety and convenience. I'm pretty sure I could have used that method for the install if I were swapping out to a shorter spring like H&R's. These BMW springs are just crazy long. Now that I think about it, I don't know that a non-sport spring could be removed like that.

Finally making some progress on the red car! Got distracted by some other stuff the past few weeks (travelling, getting engaged, buying a wagon, etc). Bunch of bullshit really.

So while I've got the interior torn out of this thing, I figured it was a good time to show off my custom purple rear deck and green Alcantara rear headrests, the results of 10 years of hard work by Florida $un Customz.

At this point I still don't know what to do with it, but I might as well get to work on some of the cosmetic stuff:

BAM Hit the mirror trim with some Carpro Dlux (https://www.amazon.com/CarPro-DLux-Plastic-Wheel-Coating/dp/B00FPUIQWE)
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170127/9c7a2ec9cd3d8e9619defd85c97514d9.jpg

BAM Hit the cowl too
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170127/aa3f188a37b69bc6815568e9d5b37279.jpg

You want some, cabin filter cover? HAVE SOME BAM
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170127/cfea7cea776d3686a69e013cacda276f.jpg

I ran out of Dlux while I was doing the cabin filter cover, so it came out a little splotchy. Oh well, it's under the hood.

Car is already looking fresh

Thinking about pulling the trigger on some Dlux - how is this holding up since January?

Some reflections on a few days of driving a sharked ZHP again after 3 years: niceeeee

-Let's run down the normal Q&A with these things-

Q: Do you feel the horsies?
A: Maybe...maybe some small ponies...like definitely not actual horse-sized horsies...no...more like mini horsies...not like Lil Sebastian, though...we all know that he's larger than life...

Q: Do you feel the throttle response?
A: Boy howdy! It's still not quite throttle-cable-good, but I'm at least 15% less shitty at rev matching 2nd when turning right at an intersection. Hell, sometimes I even get it right! Hot dang!

Q: Will it blend?
A: I don't...why would I want to know that?

Q: YOU DON'T UNDERSTAND. I NEED THE DATA FROM THE BUTT DYNO. HOW MANY HORSIES DOES YOUR SAGGY ASS READ? BE EXACT.
A: Go away.

In all seriousness, it's a very mild change, but I really like it. The throttle response is improved, but not excessive like some have reported with the pedalbox. It certainly doesn't feel like it's accelerating faster or anything. The car just seems to want to go and the only thing holding it back is me not pushing the pedal further, whereas before, the car seemed annoyed when I pressed the pedal deeper -- like I was having to coax it along.

Overall, it's a minor improvement that really made driving more enjoyable for me. Combined with adding a clutch stop and finishing the stereo/interior, I've found myself looking for excuses to drive the car and acting like a butthurt toddler when I have to go somewhere in another vehicle....I wan play wit muh toyz...

Well the only thing that I noticed was the improved throttle response, which hasn't changed. I'm still rev-matching/downshifting through a few gears as I come to every stop, whereas I didn't bother with the hassle before.

Muuuuuch needed update coming at ya face right now so sit back and shuuuut up.

My body is still stuck in a European time zone, so I made the most of waking up two hours early this morning and swapped in the heater control bracket that I had bought used a couple months ago. It's a 3 year old part that cleaned up great, but install was 200% more of an asshole than expected as I swapped over the 12V outlet too (PO had spilled some shit all up in there).

Old:
https://i.imgur.com/AVUL0RM.jpg
New:
https://i.imgur.com/sLVy7eY.jpg

I also swapped in a used M3 leather wheel before the trip. I hate to admit that I like it more than the alcantara.....probably because I'm a filthy neanderthal that gets in the car with dirty hands and makes the alcantara all nasty and slippery.

https://i.imgur.com/sknm8Th.jpg

Although it's like...pretty much plastic...I think someone cleaned it with a sealant...I don't know...it still grips better than the always-dirty alcantara, so I'm digging it for now.

I just ordered this wrap (https://www.aliexpress.com/item/Black-Artificial-Leather-Steering-Wheel-Cover-for-BMW-E46-E39-330i-540i-525i-530i-330Ci-M3/32720421604.html) to try out. I like the idea of a cheap wrap so that I don't care about beating it up. New leather wheels/shift knobs/etc are nice, but I spend too much time worrying about them to enjoy driving.

Yeah, a bit. I got used to it pretty quickly, though. You have to either pick a side to press the switch or open it like a ninja turtle.

https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/71ZGP9LGJjL._SL1500_.jpg

It's worth it to me to have the camera perfectly centered. Our wagon has the camera offset by about 8 inches and it makes it useless for aligning into a parking spot or curb.

Man, that will mess with your aerodynamics.

Eventually, that ring will embed itself into your finger and become one with your hand LOl. Congrats! Thanks guys. It's taken a week to learn that I can't touch painted surfaces with my left hand. Luckily the previous owner was married so he already wore in the driver's side door handle for me!

That word is to me what "moist" is to women. First experience with the word, I wondered why all these people had gloves on when they were working with machinery... can't unsee.

Went to rotate the tires and noticed that the left rear wheel bolts weren't all that tight...then got to the right rear and couldn't get the socket on one of them...ah shit.

https://i.imgur.com/aj3VsiF.jpg

But then I'm like wait...that's a wheel bolt...it's not even tight!

Then I high fived myself for leaving that one loose too. Smart thinking.

https://i.imgur.com/wCLuxil.jpg

It only took one beer to victory...well two if you count the mission accomplished beer.

Now I just add a single wheel bolt to my next ECS order and we never talk about this again. Cheers!

Got u fam. I’ll drop one in the box of stuff to bring to you.It was actually one of the longer bolts for the 10mm ECS spacer. Now I'm thinking that's the real culprit as I would never leave a wheel untorqued...buuut I would also go several months without checking the torque on wheels with aluminum spacers between them and the hub.

My guess is that the hundreds of heat cycles from driving caused enough expansion/contraction of the spacers to slowly loosen the wheel bolts.

And then one broke...

And I didn't notice...

Yep! Spacers are off since I'm now a bolt short.

The main reason that I wanted to get the car on the rack and rotate the tires was to check the rotors as I was getting a "wub wub wub" noise from rear when braking to a stop. It wasn't causing vibration, so I wasn't thinking warped rotor, but maybe some cooked on pad material in a spot on a rotor.

Turns out it was a loose wheel...

Glad it let me know before it fell off!

Time for an update!

So I had about two hours to spare one night and decided to do a big fluid change, starting with the engine oil and moving my way back as time allowed.

For several weeks, I was getting the yellow oil level warning light on the dash after shutting off the car, then it started coming on while driving. It was erratic, though, and the dipstick always read dead in the middle, so I assumed failing level sensor like any good e46. I went ahead and changed that ass out for the Hella branded sensor (see: BMW part with BMW emblems milled off).

https://i.imgur.com/swbIpEY.jpg

It was only after changing the sensor that I noticed that I had drained <6 quarts from the engine...hm...might not have been a bad sensor after all?

Whatever, I got shit to do. Let's change that tranny fluid:

***NO PICS OF THE TRANSMISSION SERVICE BECAUSE EVERYTHING WENT WELL AND WE'RE ON A TIME CRUNCH HERE LET'S GO FOR THE TRIFECTA AND GET THE DIFF DONE TOO***

Y'all know what's about to happen, right? It's getting late. I've got to hit the road early the next morning. I just had two smooth, successful DIY's go perfectly to plan. Recipe for disaster.

>Broke the differential fill and drain plugs free. They didn't even put up a fight. Too easy.

>Got my catch setup in place: funnel in the oil jug, elevated on a box, just like I did for the transmission without spilling a drop.

>Started to unscrew the drain plug. Stinky gear oil is running right into the funnel. Damn, I'm good.

>Dropped the plug into the funnel. No problem, happens all the time. I'll just get it after it's done draining.

>Nope. Somethings not right. Problem.

>During its fall [more like perfectly executed olympic dive], the drain plug rotated to the perfect angle to land straight down in the funnel, thereby doing its only known job of, well, being a plug.

So here I am, my face going from :-) to :-( in real time as I hold a plugged funnel, which is now effectively a cup, as stinky old diff oil fills over the edge and dumps allover my arm/my garage/the local floodplains.

The aftermath:

https://i.imgur.com/uqaENaU.jpg

It doesn't look that bad in the pic because you can't smell it.

It's been one month since the spill.

My garage still smells like rotten trash.

As the temperatures have dropped, the chirping from my blower started back up.

I mean, I like the chirping.

I really do.

It makes me want to run the car into a lake, but I like it.

So that got added to my to-do list before the wife and I covered 500+ miles over 9 hours in the red car this past weekend. I got really, really fricken lucky with an ebay purchase and snagged a new [very well balanced] motor for $50 shipped (https://www.ebay.com/itm/253150233416).

Got the old one torn out (for the 3rd? 4th? time), set the new one in, and dag gummit the black cage piece was rubbing on the housing. Great.

https://i.imgur.com/TD1YkQp.jpg

Pulled it out ready to start a return through ebay and sat them next to one another to see what the difference was...

https://i.imgur.com/jXkL7d8.jpg

Do you see that? The black cage is just a few mm further out on the shaft than the OE blower. Welp, might as well hit it, right?

I put the Bavsound speakers in one half of the car to see if I noticed a difference in sound quality from the OE HK speakers...and I don't remember which side it was, if that tells you anything. I guess I should finish out the install and see if it sounds any better and report back.
What happened to the wiper arms?I managed to get the driver's side off and reseat it in the correct position, so it fixed my problem of it tucking underneath the passenger wiper. Passenger side wiper is permanently bonded so if I ever have to change the cowl out I'll just sawzall that ass.

Nate, I just read your entire build thread, and enjoyed the heck out of it. You had me laughing throughout. This part had me laughing the most, because I am too familiar with the smell of diff oil. It's so nasty. On my last oil change, I thought I had a filter but was mistaken, so decided I'd let the oil really drain out for a long time while I went to pickup a filter from Hendricks in Huntersville. When I got back, there was a massive puddle of oil under the car. I had forgotten to remove the drain plug in the oil container under the car. The cheapest Walmart kitty litter, and a little degreaser took care of that mess. Hopefully the smell is gone by now, but if not, check out Super Clean in the purple jug. Great stuff. And congrats on your marriage. I hope you still get to buy cool toys from time to time.

I know that's right. My wife was leaving for Atlanta Mon morning and needed an oil change in the MINI Countryman. It's ridiculous where they place that oil filter housing. Well, my 15 minute oil change turned into an overflow coolant tank issue. Luckily, it was just an o-ring swap on a fitting on the bottom of the tank and I had spare coolant, but it was cold Sun, and I nearly froze trying to get all that wrapped up before dark.

Great quote!

Got distracted with a few side quests on the red car yesterday. First of all, a big thank you to @SaltyNC for letting me borrow (by way of Spenser) his BMW wiper arm puller. I have fought with this stupid wiper arm for months using hammers, drills, janky gear pullers, etc. Throw on the right tool for the job and suddenly it's easy. Arm slid off without a bit of fuss and I finally have properly aligned wiper arms that don't clip the hood.

Also came across the old Berber style floor mats that @ELCID86 had sent me a while back. The foam backing had degraded and with it the glued on Velcro pads, so I busted out the giant sewing needle from my steering wheel cover and some heavy black thread, mashed it through with some pliers and Bam! Like-new floor mats.

I had two broken clips from what I am guessing was the airbag recall. It was done before I bought the car. I ordered new ones. It's a quick and easy fix, but definitely understand the aggravation of fixing something that should have been handled by the person servicing the car. If they broke the clips, they should have replaced the clips, and they had to know they broke the clips. I bought mine from these guys:

Yeah dudes, definitely worth the $23 for this cheap-o wrap. I don't like the feel of the faux leather, though. I'm already considering a proper leather wrap if it bothers me as much as I think it will in the summer.

FYI the airbag recall doesn't involve any trim removal. You just stick a screwdriver in the backside of the steering wheel to release the clips holding the airbag in and it pops right out. I pored through several threads on the recall and the only damage people reported was a few screwdriver nicks on the steering wheel trim from careless techs. Those people got a new trim piece out of the deal.

Get the recall done, though. Or at least check your airbag yourself. White label = ok, no replacement needed. Yellow label = claymore airbag.

Nah, I think the torx screws apply to the old 4 spoke style. I saw that in the work instructions too, but it's the clippy version for our wheels. I've popped that bad boy out at least a dozen times on 3 different cars now.

If you are getting the passenger side airbag done it requires trim removal, at least thats what they told me. And apparently that's what they did!

So I got home Thursday night and found some THICC hoes by my garage...and the 18x9.5 wheels were hella wide too ayooo

https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180402/a4a46e5bca913c095727a1edf71d43a0.jpg

Nah but for real I was like damn how I gonna fit these bitties I ain't even kno

Turns out my local shop was open on Friday while I was off, but their bays were full, so they could swap my tires over if I brought the wheels in loose. So I washed the whip, snagged one last pic with the Alzors, and got her up on the quickjack so I could gank her shoes.

https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180402/fe9251fe69ca810a656b71948e33536f.jpg

Then called in the touring:

https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180402/9c115ea9d5bc3b4c07f51cddda94a518.jpg

Got the wheels back that afternoon and was like damn. Like. Those 235s are ridic wide.

https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180402/3103235d8fe52a74c01e2046bda45aa9.jpg

Here they are lined up for a comparo. Left is 235/40 on 18x9.5, right is 255/35 on 18x8.5. Coopers ftw.

BUT WAIT

Everything gotta get coated first.

I washed the wheels real good like and left em overnight to dry. Got up early Saturday morning and set up a work station to apply Optimum Gloss Coat to every surface of the wheels and the center caps.

Brake dust got nothing. On. Me.

BUT WAIT

I have 24 hours for the coating to cure and these wheel bolts are hot garbage. Can't have them looking all janky on my shiny new wheels! I thought about buying new ones, but tryna live that reduce/reuse/recycle lyfe, so....

LET'S REFINISH SOME WHEEL BOLTS

Chucked all 20 of them little buggers up in a drill and worked a wire brush all up in their nooks and crannies.

https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180402/26783b8334fe43102663222ad4200654.jpg

and frig man, nice work on the coating and the wheel bolts... your Professional Engineer Brain has ideas and patience that mine can't match.

oh, and i loved the shot of the Touring swallowing up 8 wheels and 4 tires. :)

You have a soft touch/coated 17mm socket?

I same-day-ed this bad boy (https://www.amazon.com/ABN-Inch-Impact-Drive-Socket/dp/B071RRX9K8/) Saturday morning. The paint on the bolts wasn't fully cured, so I used a plastic bag in the socket to keep from marring em up too bad. They still took some damage when being torqued down, but whatevs. I wasn't about to wait 5 days to mount my wheels just so some stupid paint can harden up.

Man, I need to do that to my wheel hardware....

ye u do

hah! It worked out since I had a lot of down time. Was going out with friends Saturday, so I did the coating that morning since they would have time to cure. Then painted the bolts Sunday morning before leaving for the day to see family and put it everything together Sunday night. Just worked in the steps where I could.

The touring shot was totes for you, Peterman. I laid out all of the wheels/tires and was like....I...I just don't know how I'm going to fit this in that little car...

Then I got going and realized it had TONS of room. Like, I could have easily fit another set of wheels and the dogs in there.

Now as far as fitment goes, I had some concerns with the 18x9.5 et35. So much so that I busted out the grinder to cut down the plastic extrustion on the rear fender liners along with the stud for the fender clip.

You can see where the tire rub had already worn it down when I had spacers in the rear:

Grounded:

Turns out the rear fitment isn't all that aggressive. I still need to hit some dips with a full tank of gas, but it looks ok for now:

The front is pretty dang pushed out though:

Damn, looking at those pics is a relief for me... I just bought Apex SM-10 18X9.5 ET 35 for the rear and was ready to send them back unopened after staring at my at my current 9.0 ET 35 rear wheel clearance...

I love the way that looks, awesome job. So clean!! Do you have Z4M bushings? I thought ET35 was a perfect fit on E46’s. I just ordered some wheels and decided not to go ET35 knowing the bushings lush the hubs out

I can't wait to compare arc8 fitments. Tow your car up into town?

What size tire are you wanting to run and how wide is the tread? I only had light rubbing with my 235/40r18's on 9" wide wheels, but that was with a spacer that pushed it to et32. There may be more room in the rear on coupies tho.

Thanks man. I have the OE bushings. I also don't think that the Z4 ones would play well with my taller, pushed out tires.

I'm running stock tire sizes 255x35x18 Hancooks... they have a pretty narrow tread.
I forgot you had a coupe... I think they do have a little more clearance IIRC Yikes!... back to afraid of opening them...

Dayum Pizza, those wheels look sick AF!

ARC8's have always been the dream wheels for me. Maybe someday when I have some $$$ saved up and we have full-on trade wars going on so that the CAD doesn't suck as much as it does now. :)

I haven’t heard “Bingo Bango Bongo” in so long I thought it was 1998.

Good update. One problem tho: where are your spinnaz/sittaz?
