View Full Version : Lorenzo's Imola sedan Project

Picked up my ZHP on February 5, 2017. I've owned ZHPs in the past, but didn't really know or fully appreciate what I had. I drive a 2014 428 MSport as my daily, which I really like, especially all the technology. But the ZHP is connected to the road and driver, like no other car I've driven.

I wasn't looking to buy another one, but after a friend recently bought one, I checked the 'For Sale' posts in this forum, and stumbled on a local ZHP that looked good. It was my favorite build - Imola, alcantara, manual, and sedan. Mileage was on the high side at 155K, but the asking price of $7K was attractive. I emailed the seller on Craigslist and saw the car the next day. It was in good condition in and out, especially the Alcantara. After a PPI, I found that it was decently maintained, but not enthusiast maintained. So much work to be done to bring up to a higher standard. But that is the fun part - especially interacting with fellow ZHP Mafia members to learn and share.

Got the car registered and titled today - it was surprisingly convenient. Didn't have to go to slow full service DMV. Last year Virginia closed down the DMV select offices which were small offices that made this kind of work easy. But in 2017 they changed their approach to DMV to go. I drove to nearby Chantilly and got on the small bus and within 10 minutes I was done. They travel around from area to area within the state on a rotating basis - they can do the many of the same services that are done at the full-service offices, but no lines.

What is the advantage of SSK?

Prevents shifting fatigue in your right arm :p

Jokes aside, the shorter throws feel nice, in my opinion. Makes shifts more precise and quicker. One of my favorite mods.

Shift knob is in great shape since I replaced the original one with a brand new one before selling it to Larry.

I was always carefully entering the car trying my best to avoid rubbing against the bolsters so they wouldn't wear as much.

I was about to comment on how rare it is to see an Alcantara bolster this old without a hole worn in it. Well done!

Took advantage of the beautiful weather in Virginia today and cleaned the wheels. There is a little bit of hardened brake dust residue - I'll need some suggestions of how to get those out but it's much better than before.

What William said on the ssk.

On the wheels, Adolpho recommends a foam paint brush for the crevices. I use a long haired brush but need to try the foam ones.

I've tried all sorts of brushes but they can't loosen the caked-on, hardened, dry brake dust.

The caked on brake dust can be removed by IronX and I would even try TarX as well. You can purchase them from detailedimage.com or Amazon. Also you should purchase a bottle of Sonax Wheel cleaner as well. that should loosen some of the harden brake dust. I've used it before in the past and it's taken care of it. The cool part is that the hardened brake dust will then purple. Last but not least, you should claybar the wheels and seal them for the best protection.

Good luck!

Magic eraser for the black plastic trims on the bumper/doors.

It works great and last (washed it twice since doing it and still looking good).

Tape to protect paint as the Magic eraser is micro-abrasive. I didn't but was very carful on he edges.

Took ZHP to RRT Racing - local Indy that specializes in BMWs, and is highly rated in northern VA (their lot was full with nice specimens - E30, E46 M3, e46 convertible, M5, etc.). After a thorough inspection, they found several costly items needing attention:

1. Wheel bearing on right wheel to fix throbbing/wobbling sound
2. Coolant overhaul with new radiator - radiator leaking
3. Oil filter housing gasket.
4. Valve cover gasket

So I'll get these done in the next month with RRT for first three items. Jon is doing VANOS rebuild in spring - so we can addresss VCG at that time. I plan to replace all fluids, then move on to more fun with with new suspension overhaul (Koni). Also needs control arm bushings. I'll do that with suspension and top off with new guibo that I have from previous car I never installed.

Then my tax refund will be gone.

Suggestion: All those, specially 2-4 are DIY items. No need to pay top dollar for a shop to do them.
A shop once quoted me $500 for the OFHG, $5 gasket and I did it in a few hours.

I understand man, I was there a year ago when I got my ZHP, Everybody started out with zero skills man... there are so many DIY write ups/videos that make things sooo much easier.
I had the parts for the complete cooling overhaul sitting in my garage for 4 months before I got the nerve to do it LOL.
Anyways, i would suggest getting a local mafia member to help out, that way you can learn as it's being done.

Thanks for the encouragement. I do have several local mafia friends in the area that have helped me in the past. But I'm a slow learner when it comes to mechanical things. I can copy what I see and learn, but often something doesn't go exactly right and you need the experience to navigate your way to the fix. That's been my downfall in the past.

Sounds great! I need the coaching to build some skills and confidence. With the warm weather we're having, spring is coming early!

What can I do to help organize? I know a few of the local members. Is there a typical place you've met in the past?

Typically we meet at Shawn's place or Bruce who has hosted us before.

But maybe this year I will have all my tools and stuff moved into my parents garage which has a flat driveway and a 2 car garage. I been talking about it with Shawn and Daniel.

Only concern is the 2 hour drive from nova. But the drive itself and the scenery is nice.

I totally don't mind the 2 hour drive . My daughter went to JMU so I'm very familiar with the route. And frankly going to Shawn's house, even though it's a shorter distance, has a lot more traffic.

I do have some tools that I can bring like an electric impact wrench. I also have a porter cable polisher if anybody wants to detail their car.

Do you have any dates in mind? I suppose we should wait till late March or early April. I think Jon Estrella may join us too.

And I would offer to host at my house but it wouldn't work. I have a small two car garage and a steep driveway.

Removed belly pan and cleaned years of residual oil that was caked on the underside of the panel from old leaks. Cleaned grease that had dripped on sway bar, nearby hoses, and surrounding area. Previous owner replaced OFHG Jan 2016, but didn't clean this area. I'm hoping there are no other serious leaks. VCG has minor leak, but I'm planning to address with VANOS rebuild in spring.

Check out the clean belly pan. I forgot to take a before picture, but it was a mess.https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170216/36e451b96f690fc86e4829662a717608.jpg

Larry,
Drive over to a NAPA store today, buy a can or better yet a squirt bottle of "Stoners" for plastic/trim. I've used it with great results (if the plastic hasn't started to dry rot). A couple months ago saw that my brother's Cadillac Avalanche had "whited" out on all that bed cover plastic. Used about half of a 20 oz squirt bottle on his trim and brought it back to as new. Even after a couple of rains and washes, it looked like new. Bruce

Little Nicole turned 15 a week ago, she asked me about cars, said anything you want to do daddy. (Isn't it amazing how your little girls can make you do anything?!). But she said I kinda like a BMW and I definitely want to learn on a stick shift. Dad's response, consider it done, the search is on and I have over a year to do it, 6 months until she gets her learners permit.

I think a first car that is stick shift is a positive from a safety perspective. It's much more engaging to drive - so it's harder to be distracted and near impossible to text and drive. Good luck with your new driver.

Had a busy ZHP maintenance weekend over the Presidents Day holiday:

1. Replaced Right Rear Wheel Bearing to fix the awful throbbing noise that gnawed at me since I bought the car 2 weeks ago. Work done by RRT Racing.

2. Coolant System Overhaul - Replaced radiator, expansion tank, water pump and pulley, hoses, thermostat and auxiliary fan switch. Work done by RRT Racing. I wasn't ready to tackle this as a DIY yet.

3. Changed Differential oil w/Redline 75W90. Did this myself. First timer.

4. Interior detail - cleaned Alcantara w/Sonax, scrubbed carpets with 303 upholstery cleaner, cleaned all surfaces with Meguiar all purpose cleaner.

5. Exterior detail - washed, clay bar, polished with menzerna medium cut 2500, and and topped off w/PowerLock paint sealant.

6. Engine Bay Clean - Power Washed and used Purple Power Degreaser.

Upcoming Work: DIY Manual Transmission Fluid Change, DIY Brake Bleed, DIY Power Steering Fluid Flush

Great thread, and beautiful car! Looks like you've already gotten a ton of work done as well, feels pretty good doesn't it!? And don't sweat being a novice DIY'er, as someone mentioned earlier in the thread we were all there at one point. The benefit we have is the E46 platform, is undoubtedly the easiest car I've ever worked on. Hands down. Everything makes sense, and was built to be taken apart, you can hardly F something up. And the YouTube DIY videos are plentiful, as is the info provided by this forum. You'll get there, just gotta take the leap.

If there's one thing though, I'd suggest painting your lower grille, or just getting a new one. That faded gray has got to go haha! Keep up the good work sir, car is looking great

Thanks for the vote of confidence. I'll be doing brake, transmission, and power steering fluid changes/flush myself the next weekends. Working my way up. In a few weeks, a good friend will be doing Vanos rebuild for me and I'm planning to VCG while he does that - under his tutelage.

And I have a brand new lower grill (came with the car). Just got figure out how to install it - remove bumper, etc.

Honestly, it's an e-Torx socket and a long extension, it'll only take Jon 2-3 mins to remove that bumper.

I can attest to this, front bumper removal is a 10 min job. And yes, you have to do it to get the clips off, there is 8-10 clips total on the top and bottom of the screen. I just swapped bumpers last weekend from my 2001 to my new ZHP, one screw in each wheel well and two torx bolts through the two big round holes under each side of the bumper with a long extension, boom you're done. I usually snap out the trim under the headlights too, just for good measure. I didn't take any pics since it wasn't really a "mod", but you should have no problems doing it.

Tackling the Vanos is really taking the leap though! I did it on my last ZHP with my dad, we took our time and made sure we followed the instructions closely. It wasn't "difficult" per say, but it's labor intensive and very tedious. You have to remove a lot of stuff, really pay attention to what you're doing, get the torque specs right, etc. If you've got veteran help then you should be fine. Not trying to scare you, the job is relatively straight forward, but it's not beginner level. Best of luck!! And get that grille on!

Changed Manual Transmission Fluid today. My guess is the fluid has never been changed - and with 155K miles, it was long overdue. The process was easy, but I ran into some bumps - of my own creation. So while there should not be a story for a simple DIY service like this, since it was my first time, unfortunately there is a story. Live and learn.

1. Ordered new transmission drain and fill plugs from ECS tuning. When the Postal Service delivered it today I saw that it needed a TorX Bit. Didn't expect that.
2. Drove to Home Depot to pick up the needed part
3. When I began to remove the fill plug I saw that it wasn't a TorX bit. Rather, it was a simple 10 mm hexagon bit. In a DIY video I watched they said it was a 17 mm bolt which I was prepared for.
4. Back to Home Depot to pick up the needed part
5. Removed the fill plug without a problem
6. Removed the drain plug without a problem. I smiled as I watched the oil drain nice and smooth.
7. Then realized that the old drain and fill plugs had a much longer thread compared to the replacement ones from ECS. So that purchase, and the trip to Home Depot for a TorX bit, was a waste. I reused the existing ones - which were in good condition anyway.
8. Went to retrieve the Redline MTL from the ECS box, and saw there was only one in the box. No worries I knew I had leftover fluid from my previous change on another car.
9. Opened the garage cabinet. There was no second bottle of MTL fluid. I only had a leftover bottles of power steering fluid.
10. Panic sets in.
11. Redline fluid is not readily available in Northern Virginia auto stores. There is a racing store that has it, but it's only open during the week.
12. Went to advanced auto parts - they didn't have what I need.
13. Walked over to Jiffy Lube next-door - they also didn't have what I needed.
14. Called the BMW of sterling parts department - they said they only have fluid for their own service department and can't sell any to me.
15. I called the service manager that I know there and asked if he could help me out. He didn't answer so I left him a message.
16. Took the drive to the dealership, went to the service department, and the service manager had received my message and told them to help me. Turned out they did have fluid available for sale. The parts manager thought it was a different kind. I was very relieved and bought two, one liter bottles and plan to return the redline or save it for another another time.
17. Got home and filled the fluid into the transmission, with my new Motive Power Filler. Smiles and laughs all around.

Next time I'll be more thoughtful and make sure I have all the right parts before start a project! I'll chalk it up to rookie mistakes. But like others have said, until I try this kind of work myself, I'm not going to learn. The whole job took me four hours - with going back-and-forth to the different stores. How sad...it should have only taken 30 minutes. In the end it was a good experience and I'm happy I did it. I hope I've entertained you or gave you a good laugh.

Glad I wasn't the only one in the beginning with these sort of mishaps. Nah, Jon just mocked me.

I replaced the center console and cup holder this evening. Goodby scratches. Looks fresh. Went off without a hitch. Except two screws in the rear ashtray don't fit right, but it all fit together anyway. Don't know what I did wrong there. No one uses that ashtray anyhow.

I'm embarrassed to admit they charged $44 a bottle. Highway robbery. I could have waited until Monday and got a 2nd bottle of redline MTL for $16. But I was frustrated that my car was stranded and naked without its oil. So I paid the high cost but was happy and relieved to finish the job.

Completed Vanos Rebuild with new Valve Cover Gasket. I was the Helper, Jon Estrella (Aut2Bahn) was the Master Tech. I learned a lot and am confident that I could change spark plugs and coils, and perhaps VCG, in the future. Jon did the surgery of the Vanos Repair with new seals and rattle kit.

Here's Jon at start:

https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170305/15914e48d1be8bbf697ebe85f06a197a.jpg

Getting ready to remove Vanos:

Old Valve Cover Gasket was in good condition (rubber was pliable) and obviously was changed less than 60k ago (car has 156K miles). I had no records of VCG work in the past, but still glad we changed it, for peace of mind and to have the documented record. No signs of leaks.

Finished work with Vanos re-installed. Job took 4 hours. Didn't run into any issues during the procedure. Beisan seals and rattle procedures were well documented and straightforward to follow.

Only hiccup was Service Engine light came on. Problem was we forgot to reconnect the Camshaft Position Sensor. Reconnected and reset the codes. Problem solved.

Results were smooth and linear acceleration. Previously, around 3,000 RPM acceleration hesitated and shuttered.

Got a number of items addressed a few days ago:

- Lemforder M3 Engine Mounts
- Lemforder Front Control Arm Bushings
- Genuine BMW Steering Coupler/Guido
- Oil Pan Gasket (to address leak)

Control Arm Bushings were overdue. One was badly torn.

https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170311/96052227e409bfdb8fec918ddcf38824.jpg

Engine Mounts were due. See tear and leaking fluid:

https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170311/17ea8252e811181b653b9a3b9042815a.jpg

Work performs by BMW of Sterling. Normally, I'd never do to a dealer for this service, but they agreed to $1000 labor for all the above and I supplied the parts. Took them all day. They said they are trying to be more competitive. They normally charged $1250 just for Oil Pan Gasket at 8 hours labor. They discounted by 20% and did the other works at no additional charge (CAB, Guibo, engine mounts), since everything was apart for the oil pan job.

Not a big difference, but some. There is less play in the steering wheel. My old one was in fair shape - no tears. Part is only $50. So worth it IMO, if you don't have to pay much or anything for labor.

I've taken my ZHP to a local shop here to put in a new steering coupler (guibo), and he suggested I should change out the lower joint assembly of the steering shaft as well. We had the car up on a lift so he twisted the steering rack and showed me that the play comes from both parts. Hopefully changing both will really tighten everything up.
Haven't gotten around to doing it yet though, as that part is $175. I'll live with sloppy steering for a little while haha just a heads up.

Yesterday I went to my very first autocross driving school. I was excited to bring my ZHP that I bought two months ago and that I have been investing considerable time effort and money for maintenance and upgrades. After the 1 hour drive to Maryland and listening to the instructors explain the course we went to our cars for a quick test evaluation. My car wouldn't start. I had no problems like is for past two months. The techs looked it over and determined that the fuel pump failed and needs to be replaced. I couldn't believe I wasn't going to get to drive today.

I called my wife and begged her to bring my other BMW 4 series M Sport coupe to the location so I can use that for the afternoon session. So it worked out fairly well. I didn't get to participate in the morning session but they doubled me up in the two afternoon sessions so I got the same amount of seat time as everyone else. But unfortunately I still had my winter tires on my car and they were dragging and screeching quite a bit. I did OK - it was a lot to absorb so quickly and it's a lot harder than it looks but I enjoyed it a lot despite not having my ZHP and using winter tires. I doubt my time would've been much better with the ZHP. My best time was 51 sec. An instructor drove my car and got 45. Then I did a ride along with one of the best instructors, in his car, and he got 39 seconds. He was incredibly aggressive and skilled on the course. It was a long 39 seconds - I couldn't wait to exit he vehicle as I thought I was going to get sick.

I'll get the ZHP fixed in the next week and look forward to participating in the rest of the autocross sessions this season.

The day ended with a sad tow from Maryland back to Virginia.

Damn, that's a bummer to hear. That's terrible timing! But at least you got some time behind the wheel, it's what you came there for.

Yeh I was so upset at first. But it turned out ok. I found Autocross exhilarating. Can't drive that aggressively on the streets. It's a thrill and fun to push your car to the limits. I'm excited to get the ZHP on the course.

I installed my summer wheels/tires on the car today and wow what a difference. I went to an empty lot and drove it hard, and no screeching tires - which slowed me down yesterday. However the instructor drove my car and got 45 seconds compared to my 51. So it's mostly driver skill versus the car. I would think car makes a more of a difference when your are more advanced in your skills.

Wow. Nice wife!!

Fuel pump?

My wife was mad at first (she had plans with our daughter for the afternoon that she had to break) but when she arrived she enjoyed watching the event.

Yeh need a new fuel pump. I also have a new fuel filter on hand and will replace that as well.

You should consider getting a fuel line kit as well if you're replacing the fuel filter. I think ECS has a kit (Vas used it I think).

Bummer. I replaced my FP some days ago as PM. Miles are 143,000. How much gas in your tank ? I took my car to the shop with 1/4 left on it, to make the install a little easier for them.

What all is in this kit and do you have a link showing what is in it?

Glad it's an easy fix. We need to plan a VA drive now that spring is here to stay.

Actually the fuel filter install kit is from bavauto.

Worth it in my book and it's cheap

Installed new Bosch fuel pump and Mann fuel filter on Thursday. Took the ZHP to 2nd autocross class today, and service engine soon light came on in route to the class! Proceeded to class and participated without issue. Car did well. I finished in the top 25%.

But the continuing issues with my ZHP is getting to me. I don't mind preventative maintenance and repairs, but I have short tolerance for unexpected issues. I'll get the car scanned to find out the code and hopefully it is not an expensive fix.

At least she looks really good, compared to the competition:

Thanks. No engine light today. Can the car correct itself? Or is it bound to return?

It will most likely return. Hopefully it was a result of the work you did and just needed to clear itself (air embolism?)

You can pick up a bluetooth OBDII scanner on Amazon for about $20. I keep one in the car in case I throw a code. It's still worth checking now that the light is off since it may have stored the code.

Good idea. But I didn't think my ZHP had Bluetooth?

The OBD2 BT scanner will plug into your car, and then you can connect to the scanner with your phone with BT to it and check for codes. I might get one eventually but BMW scanner works for now.

Here is the one that I have. Very useful for checking codes and using the Torque app.

Android :-(

I usually stop by Advance Auto and borrow theirs. Or hook up PASoft.

Some can be used with iPhone as well, I use the app OBD Fusion.

This is the one I bought. The OBD connector creates its own wireless signal to connect the iPhone.

Did DIY for power steering and brake fluids today. Power steering was easy. Brake Flush was easy too. Used Motive Pressure Kit and ATE Gold 200 fluid. Ran into one hiccup on the last wheel. When trying to open bleeder valve on driver front, I broke the bleeder screw.

I only had 4 oz of new fluid remaining in the Pump so job was nearly complete. I put back on the wheel and called it a day. I'll deal with it next year - buy a new bleeder screw, extract the old, and do another flush.
